Chapter 8 The Access Card

"My leg! How dare you, you cripple!"

Austin clutched his injured leg, and his voice was filled with agony.

This scene terrified Khloe out of her wits.

She was not thinking about how Declan had gotten the upper hand. She was too shocked that Declan, whom she deemed weak, had the audacity to strike.

He was a useless cripple. Where did he muster the courage to attack? Was he not afraid of the Scott and Watson families?

"Stop it, you bastard!" Khloe shouted as she rushed toward Austin's aid.

But when she lunged at Declan, he swiftly shoved her aside.

Declan looked at Khloe, who had fallen to the ground in a sorry state, and said with red, glowering eyes, "If it weren't for my promise to your grandfather to protect you, I would've beaten you up like I've done to him."

Horrified, Khloe sat on the ground and frantically cried out, "Someone, help! Help us! This man has lost it! A lunatic is attacking us!"

Austin could not care less about his dignity and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Security! Where's the security? There's been an assault!"

Their confrontation happened at the main intersection at the entrance of the residential entrance. Hearing the ruckus, security personnel from the complex raced toward the scene.

When she saw the security team, Khloe's confidence spiked. She rounded on them and, in a voice dripping with disdain, said, "What were you all doing? Are you just here to do nothing? Why did it take you so long to arrive? Is this how you protect the residents? I'll be sure someone hears about this."

The head of security quickly stepped in and said, "I sincerely apologize for the delay. The commotion happened outside the complex, so it took us a moment to catch on. Now, what seems to be the issue?"

Without missing a beat, Khloe pointed a trembling finger at Declan. "That man! He's a creep, a complete weirdo, and a total loser. He followed us here. And when we confronted him, he went ballistic on my husband!"

The security chief sized up Declan and noted his shabby attire. It was neither designer nor well-maintained clothes. From the looks of it, Declan was not rich.

The complex's residents were all rich and powerful. How could someone like Declan live in this neighborhood?

Khloe's account seemed to fit. With that, the guards acted on their judgment and started to encircle Declan, ready to apprehend him.

"Hey! Stop right there!" one of the guards ordered. "Raise your hands. Do you have idea who lives in this complex? This place isn't for you! You better start apologizing."

"I didn't follow anyone. I live here too. They attacked me first," Declan explained.

The security guards paused upon hearing this.

While Declan did not look rich, they knew better than to judge a book by its cover. Some affluent people had a penchant for donning humble attire.

If Declan was indeed a resident, they were treading on thin ice.

"What are you waiting for?!" Khloe yelled. "He's nothing. He was my husband and lived off my family for three years. And let's be honest, this place is a top-tier real estate. He doesn't belong here."

The security chief fixed Declan with an icy stare and demanded, "Sir, please show us your resident access card. If you can't, we'll have to take you to the police station."

With a sneer tugging at the corners of his mouth, Declan dangled the access card for everyone to see.

"Oh. We're sorry, sir. It was a misunderstanding on our part!"

Only residents of the complex possessed access cards. Upon seeing Declan's, the security team leader apologized at once.
