Chapter 4 Make A Promise

The senior executives of Jiang Group were having a board meeting.

Olive, Harold's mother, sat at the head of the desk while to her left was Harold and to her right was Jerome Jiang, Harold's son.

Harold had Jerome through Daisy. Jerome just came back from a business trip abroad. The trip was a pretext to use the company's money for leisure.

Other relatives of the Jiang family were aware of his deception, which made them dissatisfied, but they didn't dare to complain. Jerome was Olive's favorite grandson, and this put him in a privileged position in the company.

When Jiang Group was about to go bankrupt, Harold's first wife, Melody Shangguan, used her dowry to rescue the company.

For some years now, Olive had been grooming Jerome as her successor in the company.

Although they were aware Jerome had used the company's money for leisure, they kept their mouths shut.

Jerome went to enjoy himself for about six months and just returned today.

"I summoned all of you here because I have important news to share." Olive then looked at Jerome kindly and told him, "Jerome, tell us the news you heard during your trip."

Pretending to be tired from the trip, Jerome cleared his throat and said, "I heard that MC Group will establish a new real estate company in D City. They have bought the vacant land in the suburbs and want to build a new district!"

His words caused an uproar in the room.

"MC Group has even extended its business to D City!"

"MC Group is very powerful. They must have found D City to be a good place!"

"Whatever MC Group builds always succeeds!"

"I heard that Benson Gu, the president of MC Group, owns a third of the world's properties! Anyone who can marry him will be instantly rich!"

"Yes! I agree. Being his wife is almost the happiest thing in the world! The wealth in the family can support several generations!"

"Stop daydreaming! Rumors say that Benson has not been interested in women for more than twenty years. They say he must have a hidden disease!"

Carolyn sat by the door. She was not in the mood to listen to their conversation but instead was in a trance and feeling drowsy.

"Please, let's have some order. Be quiet."

Jerome wore a sullen look. The discussion had drifted away from his intention. He was craving praise from his relatives for bringing them such earth-shattering news.

"This is a good opportunity for Jiang Group. Suppose we succeed in signing a contract with MC Group and become its supplier, the Jiang family will become a second-class company!" Olive was speaking with excitement.

"But we have several competitors who want to cooperate with MC Group."

"It will be challenging to sign the contract!"

"This task is an impossible one."

Olive saw that there was fear and discouragement on their faces, and it made her angry. "Shut up! Don't say such defeating, discouraging words! We haven't even tried, and you are saying it won't work. How do you know it won't work?

Harold, I want you to go to MC Group tomorrow and get us that contract!"

Harold was a cunning man who knew that her order was a hot potato. He wouldn't accept a task he couldn't finish.

"Mom, I've been busy at the construction site lately. I don't have the time," Harold told her, trying his best to evade the assignment.

"Then Kelvin, you should do that." Olive frowned as her eyes turned to her second son.

Kelvin was also shrewd. Jiang Group was an obscure company in D City. Compared to MC Group, it was very insignificant. He was sure that MC Group would not even give them the pleasure of a consideration. It was almost an impossible task to sign a contract with MC Group.

"Mom, I also have several projects to deal with. I am choking on them. How about Jerome having a try?" Kelvin cleverly threw the ball into Jerome's court so Olive could direct her attention to him. After all, he was the one who brought the news.

Jerome instantly became anxious. He had revealed the news to his relatives because he wanted them to believe that he had traveled abroad to investigate projects for the company and not for leisure. Right now, he was in trouble.

He would be a successor to Jiang Group. If he failed to secure the contract, that would put him in a bad light with his relatives.

"It's not that I am shirking the responsibility. But I have many important things to do, too." Jerome grinned as he glanced at Carolyn, who was sitting in a corner in the room.

"Carolyn is free these days. I propose that she goes." The thought of giving Carolyn a hard time made Jerome gloat. 'I've never liked her. This will give her a hard time.'

"What?" Carolyn woke up from her sleepiness.

Olive frowned at her. She was her least favorite granddaughter. "Why weren't you listening carefully during the meeting? How can you make progress in the company if you are not disciplined? Look at Jerome. Every day, he is making improvements and getting more and more exceptional. As for you, you are not making any effort towards progress."

"Grandma, I guess that Carolyn was thinking about men," Reyna said. An evil smile played on her lips.

"Shut up, Reyna!" Carolyn said in a stern voice.

"Stop arguing, you two!" Olive said, pounding her hands on the table.

"Carolyn, make some preparations immediately. Tomorrow, you are going to the new real estate company of MC Group to negotiate the contract. You have four days to get it signed."

Carolyn was shocked. 'Four days? That's a short time for such an important contract. It's almost an impossible task.'

They always gave her the most challenging tasks.

"Okay." She knew that refusing was a hopeless case.

Reyna sneered. "Carolyn, don't act like it's going to be easy. This contract is a big deal for our family. You must put in the hard work and no slacking off!"

"Yes! This contract is a game changer. To be on the safe side, you must make a promise! If you fail, you will immediately leave Jiang Group!"

Jerome had always loathed Carolyn because of her mother's legacy. He always wanted a way to kick her out so she wouldn't take it.

"I think it's a good idea!"

"And I agree! That settles it."

The other relatives echoed their agreement. With Carolyn out of the way, there would be one less person fighting for the company properties.

Carolyn sneered.

"In that case, I won't accept it."

"No way! You promised just now! Everyone heard you." Jerome replied anxiously.

"Well, that's enough. Listen to me!

Carolyn, if you fail to sign the contract, I will confiscate all the legacy Melody left you," Olive said in a serious tone.

Carolyn asked, "What if I get it done?"

"Ha-ha! It's amusing!" Reyna thought Carolyn had cracked the funniest joke in the world.

"Hear her. It's so easy to say. Do you think you are the wife of MC Group's president?"

"Exactly! You overthink your importance."

"Carolyn, if you get the contract, I will bark like a dog in front of you!" Jerome doubted Carolyn's ability to get the contract signed.

He believed that no one among the Jiang family would be able to do it. It was an almost impossible task.

"Okay! It's settled. Everyone heard what you said. Don't go back on your word!" Carolyn replied. Her voice was cold.

"I said it. I won't take it back." Jerome looked at Carolyn contemptuously. He believed she had already handed over the legacy without a fight.
