Chapter 6 Missed Target

The moon retreated into the shadows of the dark cloud again as a gloominess covered the city, this is clear two days after the night before the Blue Moon; Scarlett had mapped out plans on how to deal with the wolf that had dared fight her in a one on one combat.

Glenn made a mistake challenging her to a duel in the first place and now he is gonna feel the pangs of pain before he goes to hell.

A pair of yellow eyes glared at her from a few meters ahead as she flashed her red eyes for an instant as the bearer of the yellow eye's whooshed off into the darkness, smiling to herself while licking her fangs which she unleashed unconsciously.

Turning abruptly on her heels she headed back towards her chamber's.

"It's been a while since I had a time of peace, but to be frank I have to do some training because it's a long time."

Meanwhile the beta sent out to kill Glenn lay in wait a few meters from Blue Lais tavern where Glenn sat drinking ale with his friends, the door swung open as the rays of light from inside the tavern flooded outside with a figure emerging from within.

The rays of light stilleouthe the figure who slowly staggered out into the darkness obviously drunk as his steps were uncoordinated and uncalculated.

The drunken figure suddenly halted as his ears caught a burst of wind on his left side, he is drunk doesn't mean his wolf senses were dulled. Assuring himself that nothing is happening he staggered forward heading home.

The Beta would rather wield a dagger or shoot an arrow than use stealth mode, and he was a bundle of nerves because of it. He crept along the side of the little stone house. Night draped like a dark veil over this row of homes along the outskirts of the walled city. Though no one should be awake at this hour, his careful footsteps were silent on the patch of dry grass between this house and the identical one next to it.

His fingers grazed the cool silver dagger stuck into his belt, crouching low beside a window, his ear almost touching the cracked shutters.

But he felt no sympathy for his target,he dared challenge Scarlett then he shall pay for it.

The beta held his breath and listened, expecting total silence. With any luck he stood straight walking out into the darkness slowly trailing the staggering figure keeping his distance just as he'd observed during his many nights of surveillance.

He could cover his nose and mouth with the chloroform-soaked rag in his coat pocket and steal away into the night with him, hours before anyone could think of looking for him.

Instead of silence, a rhythmic pattern of staggering steps echoed continuously in front of him.

The beta had waited a full hour after the latest possible timeframe in which he could have been sleeping but the target should be dead or he would lose his head.

This was why he'd begged to use a different lethal method, but Scarlett didn't want anyone to suspect foul play and wouldn't relent. She said the wolf and his family hadn't lived in this city for long, had no family nearby, and kept to themselves so far except Glenn who goes about bullying younger and weak wolves. The town-even their neighbors-would soon forget them. No one would take the time to worry about or search for his body after his death, at least not for long.

The Beta's hand hovered over the dagger at his hip, but he decided against taking action till he got a clear zone to make a move.

The Beta silently prayed that Glenn would make it through the lit path and enter into the dark part of the road so he could make a move. If he did, he had a new plan that just might work.

He patted the bow which remained safely in his hands. If he could overtake him without leaving bruises or other signs of a struggle, he could cover him quickly the chloroform piece of rag he held, an alternate faster method of transmission than lethal form.

If he succeeded this night, he could hide out in the woods lining the road to the orchard until he reached the courtyard.

He knew he would need to keep him quiet with a steady stream of chloroform, He was pretty sure it wouldn't harm him to stay unconscious for that long until Scarlett deals with him herself.

As the Beta adjusted to a more comfortable position, Glenn came into view once again. If he can't get him by stealth then he has to use his weapons.

The Beta now able to blend in with the darkness, walked a safe distance behind. With every step he took, his confidence began to build. He thought of landmarks they needed to pass before they would be out of the bustling area.

They passed each one as they walked to the livery, Glenn slowly staggering forward.

As they came upon the last landmark, the large granite fountain just inside the city gate, the Beta allowed himself a small smile. They were almost there, almost out of the walled city. Just a few dozen feet until they were out of the gates and then a few minutes more until they made the sharp turn onto the orchard lane. He would cut through the trees lining the road to dart ahead of him and position himself to execute his new plan.

Then the unthinkable happened. As Glenn rounded the fountain, a sudden commotion burst out behind, some drunk wolves were involved in a brawl; blocking him from sight of the trailing Beta.

The Beta picked up his pace even though it might draw unwanted attention, but the people around him had noticed the incident and weren't paying attention to him as he darted between pedestrians.

When he was only ten paces away from getting to the other end of the crowd, two city guards clad in dark uniforms stepped around coming his way but heading for the fighters; he halted as he growled inwardly in anger. They two guards grabbed the wolves half hauling and half dragging them away.

"This couldn't be happening" The Beta mused angrily. "Would I have to pay my head for his; No never,he shall pay by any means necessary".

Making sure no one was watching, the Beta melted into the shadows disappearing as quickly as he had come.
