Chapter 4 The Blue moon

The day was filled with an unusual bustle and frivolity, everyone hurried to and fro to meet ends need as if they were preparing for a big occasion. A big occasional?, No; preparing for something? Yes.

They were preparing for the greatest day in the life's of the wolves, the night before the Blue Moon; the night every male wolf pick a mate from amongst the female wolves of the pack. But tonight they anticipated someone more than them choosing a mate,they want to know who Scarlett the Luna would choose as her mate.

They had heard of the outcome of the council meeting and the wolves especially the male were hoping she rejects everyone of them so they can fight her for the leadership position. Each and everyone of them had been nursing a passion for the position and are ready to beat the other to it not minding what it will cost them.

At the center of the city stood the amphitheatre called the Arena, a place were may great wolves had won and lost fights. It was mostly gloomy and dull except when any wolf is challenged to a fight but today it was looking gay with colors as it was decorated with various emblems of each wolf who had been chosen for the selection.

The sun slowly moved towards the horizon as the various merchants and traders banter and canter to passerbys to buy their wares.

The selected wolves numbering about two dozen of them stood at one end of the alpha gates watching the bustle while keeping an eye on the soon setting sun as it set their blood tingling.

Who wouldn't want to be a leader over other's but at the same time they fear the fierceness of Scarlett who they had seen in battle a lot of time; but they reckoned she would be destabilize by the events of the past days to focus on the fight.

The sudden darkening of the sky signaled the setting of the sun as a gloomy shadow fell over the whole city as everyone both merchants and traders quickly locked up and left the street heading into the amphitheatre to witness tonight's proceeding with their own eyes.

The moon peeped from behind a black cloud for a while before retreating back into it's fold. All eyes stayed fixed on the moon awaiting it's appearance fully for the event to begin, but it seems it wasn't ready to show it's face to them.

For minutes they sat watching the moon which slowly showing it's face bit by bit casting it's first slivery rays upon them as they smile in happiness.

It didn't take time for the moon to began taking another shade which was slowly taking over the slivery white color of the moon, it wasn't long as the moon turned a shade of blue while casting shimmering light on them; everyone quickly took their seats awaiting the elders and the main characters in tonights event.

A loud bugle blew rather too loudly than before signifying the beginning of the events, the lights hung at various parts of the theater were lit providing enough brightness for everyone to see what's happening on the stage.

To the left the elders slowly walked in according to their ages, taking their seats to await the arrival of Scarlett.

The selected wolves sat on another row below the elders while the Accord,a book containing the rules governing the wolves sat on it's place on the platform in front of the young wolves.

A bright ray of light appeared at the gates as all eyes turned towards it's direction, six guards walked in with the first two bearing torches followed by Scarlett with four other guards taking the rear,the last two bearing torches also.

The procession walked towards the throne where the Alpha usually sits during the events as Scarlett took her seat with the guards standing guard before and beside her.

The stentorian stood up and bellowed out a "The selection had begun" in a loud voice before taking her seat as another elder wolf stood to his feet.

"Scarlett,as you already know below us here are the finest and bravest of our young men selected for you to make a choice from. Do not keep us waiting,make a choice and let's be off with the other's" The elder spoke out.

With a nod from the high Beta the selection wolves walked out of their seats and lined up before the podium Scarlett sat on, without batting an eyelid she stood from her seat and walked down the six steps and landing in front of them, taking a good look at them with a sly smile on her face she walked along them inspecting them completing a full circle around them before returning to her seat.

Standing before the throne she roared out at the moon sending shivers into the hearts of everyone present as the struggle to keep their composure.

"You all have made a great selection" She began facing the elders before turning towards the selected wolves.

"You all are handsome and good-looking but I hate to say this, I choose not one of you; you may go home".

"What do you mean Scarlett, remember this is the last chance for you to save yourself and retain your position as Luna" one of the elders reminded her.

"I remember telling you all vividly that I am willing to fight to retain my position even if I am gonna die in the process" She retorts.

"There is no much talk in it, you are already in the Arena; you rejects them then you fight them to the death" The high Beta explained as the wolves shuffled their feets in anticipation.

"Then so be it" Scarlett said solemnly after few minutes of silence.

"Ready yourself oh ye wolf that is ready and capable to fight to become Alpha, you now have a chance to contest for it. Anyone the defeats her become the Alpha of The Mooncrest pack" the high Beta announced as every six more wolves joined the already selected two dozens.

Scarlett took off her woolen coat and hands over to her personal guard while taking out her husband's necklace from inside her pocket hunging it on her neck as she walked down to the sandy stage.

Every wolves stood facing her slowly began transforming to their wolf form and in seconds a variety of wolves stood before her. Smirking her eyes took a shade of red as her claws and fangs gleamed brightly in the moonlight, with a fierce roar she stood her ground as the wolves charged at her.
