Chapter 8 Familiar

The two entered the banquet hall again. The lights were back on, and the guests had begun to eat.

Gerald turned his head to look at Sheila and frowned.

"Winnie, your face..."

He didn't notice until now that Sheila's face was covered in a thick layer of foundation. Although she still looked beautiful, he didn't think heavy makeup suited her.

Sheila clenched her fists, pursed her lips, and immediately explained, "I drank fruit wine by mistake and got a rash because of my allergies. Mom didn't want me greeting guests with a blemished face, so she covered the rash for me."

She was afraid that with a light makeup, Gerald would find out that she wasn't Winnie.

Gerald nodded and took Sheila to propose a toast to his family.

Because Gerald's parents, Samuel and Emily Lamont, were abroad on a business trip, they couldn't attend the engagement party. Only Charlene Lamont, Samuel's sister and Gerald's aunt, and other relatives of the Lamont family were present.

"Aunt Charlene, this is Winnie, my fiancée," Gerald said to Charlene.

The woman was wearing a long black velvet dress, her hair was pulled up in a neat bun. She was well maintained, and no one could tell her age.

Charlene nodded and gave the bracelet in her hand to Sheila. She patted her hand and said, "Be a good partner in life to my nephew, okay?"

"I will. Thank you, Ms. Lamont." Looking at the elegant and kind woman in front of her, Sheila nodded and smiled.

At this time, Sheila noticed that someone was staring at her. She looked over and found that Herbert was raising his eyebrows and looking at her up and down.

Afraid of being found out by him, Sheila quickly looked away.

Herbert chuckled and said in a playful tone, "Why do I feel like my future sister-in-law right now is a little different from the one I met last time?"

Herbert's words made Sheila's face change slightly and her heart race. She took a deep breath and replied in a nonchalant tone, "Why do you say that, Herbert?"

"Last time I saw you, I thought you were an arrogant, shrewish piece of work. Why are you so docile this time?"

Frowning, Gerald cast a warning glance at Herbert, but he was also confused and looked at Sheila.

Sheila's heart started pounding against her chest, and her lips began trembling uncontrollably.

What should she do? The next second, her mind went blank. She didn't know how to answer.

"Winnie is a very well-adjusted young woman. She knows when to be assertive and when to be obedient. She's my daughter. I should know." Seeing that Sheila was about to collapse, Enoch stepped in and spoke up for her.

Herbert nodded and put on an ambiguous expression. It was hard to tell whether he believed Enoch or not.

Sheila thought it wasn't a good idea to stay here long, so she whispered to Gerald, "I'm still not feeling well. May I return to the lounge and rest for a bit?"

"Let me accompany you." Looking at Sheila's pale face, Gerald didn't suspect her. He just thought that her allergic symptoms were getting the better of her. He was about to take Sheila to the lounge when somebody stopped him.

Gerald turned around and saw Leo Sellers who had just closed a big case and come to the party in a hurry. He was dressed in a wrinkled suit, but his hair was tidy.

Leo walked up to Gerald and playfully punched him in the arm. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think that an uptight buzzkill like you would get married before I did. Introduce me to the brave young woman who's willing to accept you."

Gerald shook his head and laughed. He was used to Leo's teasing, so he didn't take his words seriously. He introduced him to Sheila, "This is my best friend, Leo Sellers, a lawyer who doesn't pay much attention to his work."

The moment Sheila saw Leo, the world seemed to freeze all around her.

Then, her mind took her back to five years ago.

The first time she met Leo was in the orphanage. He was a warm-hearted young man who carried out a charity activity there, and she was an innocent girl.

He taught her how to read and write and brought her high-end toys that she had never seen before and chocolate bars that only French aristocrats could eat.

Her moments with Leo were her rare happy times in the orphanage. She thought that her happiness would last for a long time, but one day, under a cherry tree, Leo said goodbye to her. He told her that he would go abroad to study and become a famous lawyer.

Apparently, he had made his dreams come true and become what he had intended. Good for him.

Sheila snapped back to her senses and greeted Leo with a smile. "Nice to meet you."

Leo frowned. It was his first time meeting Gerald's fiancée, but why did he feel like she was so familiar?
