Chapter 6 Operation

Randall took a closer look as soon as he heard this.

With his mind's eye, he imagined the possible spots the glass might be in.

After a while, he narrowed his eyes and stared at the middle section of the artery on the left side of the boy's neck.

A video of Stewart performing surgery on someone who was in this same situation replayed in Randall's head at this moment.

Judging by the cut and how the boy bled, Randall deduced that the shard of glass was definitely in that position.

It appeared to be moving along the artery and scratching the boy's blood vessel.

The bleeding wasn't even the major issue now. The fact that the artery in question was very close to the heart made the situation grave. If the shard of glass entered the boy's heart, he would give up the ghost in a matter of seconds.

An emergency surgery needed to be conducted there and then, so Randall decided not to wait for the ambulance.

Since the old man had made a correct diagnosis of the situation, Randall couldn't help but take a look at him.

Just when Randall rolled up his sleeves in preparation, Perry's disapproving voice came from behind.

"Hey, you disabled man! What makes you think you can operate on him? Have you forgotten that your right hand is maimed? He's already in a critical state. Do you want to cut his artery so that he'll die from excessive internal bleeding?"

Doubt was written all over the old man's face when he heard Perry's statement. The glimmer of hope in his eyes vanished.

Seeing that he was making headway, Perry added, "I hate to break it to you, sir. I know this guy very well. He's known to be a loser in Herdale Medical School. He's not fit to operate on a slightly injured animal, let alone a human whose life is in danger. His right hand shakes as if he's suffering from Parkinson's disease. Is this the kind of person you want to operate on your grandson?"

The old man was also a doctor, so he knew how important a stable pair of hands was for an operation.

He reasoned that allowing a disabled person to operate on his injured grandson was too big of a risk to take. He feared that Randall would kill his grandson right in his presence.

Frowning deeply, the old man shouted, "Even if you don't have a heart, don't you have ethics as a doctor? Fuck off!"

Randall was taken aback by this sudden yell. He moved away immediately.

He was only trying to help. But he got criticized like that. He was going to see how Perry was going to shine.

A bright smile appeared on the old man's face as he looked up at Perry expectantly. "Thanks for offering to help, young man. I'm also a doctor. This is an emergency. From the look of things, I think there's a shard of glass in my grandson's artery. However, I don't know its exact location. That can only be confirmed after his neck is cut open."

Perry's face turned pale when he heard this statement.

What the hell! This old man wanted him to cut open his grandson's neck? And a shard of glass was in his artery?

It turned out that the boy didn't just have minor injuries. Perry knew that he had bitten off more than he could chew.

He had no idea how to tell the position of a shard of glass without the use of advanced equipment.

Perry had never seen or learned this kind of operation before. He didn't even remember if the teachers had taught it in class.

Carrying out such an operation without having the slightest idea was a no-no for him.

"No, I can't do that. It's too dangerous!" Perry refused straightforwardly, shaking his head vigorously.

He knew that operating on the boy without the right knowledge was as good as committing murder. And it would put a dent in his reputation as a doctor.

It would be a permanent stain irrespective of how well he might perform later on in his career.

Perry cussed out Randall in his mind as he stared at him.

The old man's hope was shattered again. With dim eyes, he said anxiously, "You don't have to worry. If anything goes wrong during the operation, I'll take full responsibility. You won't get into trouble. Please just operate on him!"

Perry and Tonya looked away as the old man begged profusely.

"How can I take such a risk even before my medical career kicks off formally? No, thanks," Perry mumbled inaudibly.

The onlookers, who had gathered at the accident scene, began to gossip when they saw what was happening.

"How come they have nothing in their brains despite being medical students in such a prestigious school? Shame on them!"

"Don't let this surprise you. Doctors nowadays are like this. They only know how to prescribe tons of drugs that aren't needed. Most of them don't have ethics."

"The health sector is declining because of cowards like them. They don't deserve to become doctors!"

"Shut the fuck up! What do you guys know?" Perry and Tonya suddenly retorted when they couldn't take the crowd's criticisms anymore. They turned around, intending to leave.

The old man's shoulders slouched at this moment. When he saw that his grandson was still losing blood and the ambulance was nowhere in sight, he couldn't wait any longer. He took out a small medical toolbox from his backpack, intending to carry out the operation himself.

"You are not in a stable state. If you try to operate on your grandson in this state, I'm afraid he will die even before the glass fragment reaches his heart. How about you let me do this?" Randall suddenly uttered.

Although the old man told him off, he couldn't just stand by and watch the boy die when he could help.

"Aren't you afraid of taking the risk?" the old man asked, looking at Randall curiously.

"I don't deserve to be a doctor if I shy away from doing something just because of the risk involved. You just have to approve."

Once the old man nodded in approval, Randall stepped forward.

He disinfected his hands, took the scalpel from the old man, and squatted. He cleaned the boy's neck and was about to operate on the boy.

Perry said unhappily, "Do you think you're still the top student at Herdale Medical School? Need I remind you that you are handicapped? Stop pretending, you fool!"

"Honey, please don't waste your energy in cautioning this idiot. He will face dire consequences when this boy dies in his hands."

Tonya held Perry's arm as she sneered.

However, Randall soon proved them wrong.

Gasps of surprise filled the air all of a sudden.

"Oh my God! It's so fast. This guy must be a genius!"

Most of the onlookers covered their mouths. Their eyes were bulging out of the sockets.

The old man's jaw dropped at the same time. His eyes squinted in disbelief. "How is this possible?"

Randall had just made a small cut on the patient's neck and took out a shard of glass using the scalpel as if he knew where the glass was. He then stitched the opening quickly.

The entire process took about thirty seconds.

The bleeding stopped and the boy's temperature normalized immediately. It was nothing short of a miracle!
