Chapter 4 Self-defense

Jayda looked at Kira with interest and asked, "You can't speak, can you?"

Kira quickly nodded her head in response.

She had no idea if the original owner of this body was born mute or if she just lost her voice temporarily because of shock. Unfortunately, because she was in the primitive era, there was probably no cure for her. If there was, it definitely was not discovered yet.

'Does this mean I won't be able to talk forever?' Kira wondered, appalled.

It seemed that God had closed all the doors and windows for her.

Jayda seemed to have sensed that Kira was in distress.

Because of this, she wrapped her arms around Kira's neck and rubbed her cheek with hers to comfort Kira.

"It's okay. You're beautiful. I'm sure God will bless you and give you the ability to talk soon."

Although Kira was taken aback by Jayda's enthusiasm and gentleness, she felt a little better now.

Embarrassed, she smiled shyly at Jayda.

"You're lovely. I like you," Jayda remarked. Suddenly, a question popped in her head, and she asked, "Where are you from anyway? You have such fair skin. So beautiful. Can I call you Whitie from now on?"

All of a sudden, Tori, the tiger, groaned at Jayda's feet. It seemed that it did not like what Jayda had just said. Meanwhile, Kira got frightened at Tori's sudden movement. Her neck shrank, and she shook her head repeatedly, wishing it would not come at her.

Jayda blinked twice and asked Kira, "Don't you like it?"

Kira waved her hand in response. She felt anxious and frustrated for not being able to express herself well.

All of a sudden, an idea occurred to her. She grabbed Jayda's hand and then held out her own index finger. Then, she slowly wrote the letter 'K' in the air.

Jayda looked at her in confusion. It took her a moment before she realized what Kira was trying to tell. When she did, her eyes suddenly lit up, and she asked, "Your name is K?"

Kira nodded her head repeatedly.

"K..." Jayda murmured to herself. "Nice to meet you, K. I'm Jayda."

She held Kira in a tight embrace and kissed her on the cheek. Kira had to admit, Jayda's enthusiasm slightly overwhelmed her.

"K, let's go back to the cave. It'll be fun there. Theo and the others will come back today."

Jayda held Kira's hand and kept chattering on the way to their destination.

"My brother, Keith, was the one who brought you back. I assure you he's a good person and will treat you well. Our people are also very friendly. I'm sure they'll like you."

Jayda talked nonstop as they walked, so things were starting to fall into place in Kira's mind.

It turned out that the man she had knocked out was named Keith, and he was Jayda's brother. They belong to a tribe called the Vincenzo.

"Right now, we're short of food that even our female members have gone out to hunt."

Jayda could not help but sigh as she remembered how bad their situation was at the moment.

Kira now understood how difficult it really was to live and survive in a primitive society.

Food was something they had to work very hard on to find; otherwise, they would starve to death.

Kira reached out and touched Jayda's arm to comfort her.

At that moment, Jayda turned to look at Kira and asked, "Which tribe are you from anyway? Why were you brought here by Keith from the woods?"

That question was very difficult to answer.

Kira had no idea what tribe she belonged, much less knew any tribes at all.

Even if she did, she could not speak and could only blink her eyes and shake or nod her head in response.

"You're definitely not one of us. I've never seen you before."

It was only after asking a couple of questions did Jayda remember that K could not speak. Because of this, she simply enumerated the names of the tribes and asked K about them one by one.

"Are you one of the Ikers? The Edgars? You're so beautiful, but I'm sure you're not a Mekhi. They all have horns on their heads."

Jayda kept murmuring to herself, wondering where K could have come from.

Little did she know, Kira silently memorized all the tribes Jayda had mentioned.

Thanks to her, Kira learned that the Vincenzos were not the only people on the continent. There were actually a lot, and each tribe was significantly different from the others.

Apparently, the Vincenzo was one of the five most powerful tribes on the continent.

She found out from Jayda that it was common practice for tribes to compete for food and territory.

But as she listened to Jayda's lecture, she did not find nor did she feel anything regarding the tribe of her body's original owner.

She could not help but think that the original owner's identity was mysterious.

"Oh! K, Mama once mentioned that there's a tribe called Yaretzi. Their people were known to have the blood of the gods. They're said to be the emissaries who help us communicate with the gods. However, they only exist in legends, and nobody has ever seen them."

The excitement on Jayda's face was apparent as she talked about the Yaretzi.

Although that story was interesting, Kira no longer had the energy to respond to Jayda's words.

She could barely walk and even felt that her body was about to collapse from exhaustion and fatigue.

She was starving! Sadly, that was not the only thing she was troubled about. She was so terrified of Tori that her knees were weak and trembling.

Because Kira could not utter a word, she gently patted Jayda's arm to let her know what she was feeling. But before she could signal anything, her stomach grumbled in hunger.

"Are you hungry? You probably haven't eaten anything for a long time?" Jayda asked with a frown.

Kira nodded immediately.

Out of pity, Jayda held Kira comfortingly.

"Don't worry. Where we're headed has food. We're going to my mother's place, the biggest cave in our tribe."

Kira nodded again, but this time, to express her gratitude.

Not long after, they arrived at a large open area where it was bustling with people.

The field was probably as big as a school playground.

Several men in beast fur were basking in the sun. Behind them, there was an enormous cave. That must be what Jayda was talking about.

To Jayda and Kira's surprise, Keith was there, standing at the entrance of the cave.

He was looking at Kira warily, assuming she was here up to no good.

Kira looked back at him. Not knowing what to do, she stood petrified in the spot.

Jayda, who seemed oblivious to Kira and Keith's strange exchange of gazes, pulled Kira towards the cave and asked, "Aren't you hungry? Come with me inside. I'll get you something to eat."

"Why are you here?"

Keith asked Kira with a glum expression on his face.

Kira did not say anything. Well, she could not speak in the first place.

All of a sudden, a young man next to Keith glanced at Kira and remarked with a smirk, "Keith, I smell your scent on her. Is that your female?"

"No. She's..."

But before he could finish his words, Jayda answered for him, "Yes. She's my brother's female. Keith even brought her here to show Mama."

Keith ignored what Jayda had said and instead asked her, "Why did you bring her here? How did you know her? Don't you know she's a liar? All she says is nothing but lies."

Jayda was confused. She could not understand why her brother was acting so weirdly. He was fine a while ago when he came here. He was actually caring for K. It had only been a while, but his attitude had completely changed. Could it be that he had decided to abandon K?

Besides, K could not even speak. How could she possibly lie?

Jayda got mad at Keith for being acting like that.

She decided to ignore her brother and instead dragged Kira into the cave.

"Why did you bring her here?" he asked again. But seeing that his sister was pretending she did not hear him, he turned to look at the man next to them and ordered, "Theo, take Jayda back to her cave."

Upon saying that, Keith pushed Jayda to the young man.

Meanwhile, Kira was stunned to see what was happening.

She just pushed him a while ago in defense. She did not even mean to hurt him! But because of what she had done, she became the bad person?

She was just defending herself!
