Chapter 5 A Ridiculous Wedding

Talon was shocked by Bonnie's sudden outburst. He had more things to say but held them back now.

Bonnie closed her eyes in frustration. Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes again. Her eyes were as dead as cold winter.

Meanwhile, Talon looked at her daughter expectantly. A moment later, Bonnie opened her mouth to tell her decision.

"Fine. I'll marry him."

Since everything was already prepared for the wedding, it was easy to pick up where they left off. The only difference now was there was a different groom who stood beside Bonnie on the altar.

The priest took a deep sigh, convincing himself this was fine before he came back to resume the wedding.

"Let's start again, then. Do you, Gavin Zhuo, take Bonnie Meng as your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do."

This time, Bonnie couldn't help but count the seconds until Gavin answered. It didn't take him even a second to answer. That was oddly decisive of him.

Why did he insist on making good on their engagement many years ago? What was he planning? And how could he decide something so life-altering without even thinking about it?

"Do you take her, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you part?"

"Yes, I do." The words might be the most romantic oath in the world but Gavin's apathetic tone just stripped them off their worth. In his tongue, they sounded like mourning words.

When it was Bonnie's turn, she said yes even faster than Gavin did.

As she answered, the corners of her mouth raised into a smile that looked barely there. Whether it was a mocking or bitter smile, she didn't know.

Not too long ago, she made up her mind to decide things for her own. These were things like marriage and her future. But now, she couldn't even begin to take this wedding with this crazy man as seriously as she should.

Thankfully, the rest of the wedding finished without any more event. The priest almost fainted with anger at the way this wedding went on. As such, all other following schedules had to be cancelled. Gavin didn't ask Bonnie to leave her family and spend the night with him. Instead, he was unexpectedly kind and let her stay at home for a few more days. He told her he would pick her up in a week.

Bonnie stood at her family's gate and watched as Gavin sped off in his car. After he disappeared, she felt her entire body sag in relief. This day tried all the patience and strength in her body.

"Bonnie, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you." Rosa wrapped her arms around her daughter's back.

"It's fine, Mom. I don't blame you." Right now in her mother's arms, Bonnie could breathe a little easier. She smiled. "Gavin Zhuo must have something on Dad. And I can't just let Dad die, right? Otherwise, who would take care of you and brother?"

If someone should be sacrificed, it should be her. Her family shouldn't suffer when she could do anything for them.

At least, this way, she would not live a guilty life in the future.

In fact, this might be a form of selfishness. It was something that would make her feel less guilty.

"Sis, weren't you supposed to be attending your wedding banquet? Why did you come back so early?" her younger brother Jett Meng asked. He had a fever that day so he wasn't able to attend the wedding. It was lucky he wasn't there to witness the mess earlier. He stood by the kitchen door with a puzzled expression on his face.

"I..." Until that moment, Bonnie didn't realize how difficult it would be to tell her brother what had happened today.

"There's no wedding banquet anymore," Talon said. He walked down the stairs in a sour mood as he scolded his son. "Jett, take your medicine and rest in the living room. I have something to tell everyone."

"Okay," Jett answered obediently. He was a little confused at what was happening but he could sense the thick tension between his father and sister.

When Jett arrived at the living room, his parents and sister were already seated and waiting for him.

The atmosphere could be cut by a knife.

"Dad, what happened today?" Jett didn't know what to think. His first thought was maybe the Xia family backed out of the wedding. The more he thought about it, the more he felt it was what happened. He was about to rush out and beat Neil up when his sister laid a hand on his arm.

"It's not what you think. We are to blame for what happened today."
