Chapter 5 Self-Reliance

Sabrina felt flustered and recounted the events from the previous night to Pauline.

Pauline stared at Sabrina with wide eyes, struggling to find her voice. "Wait... You actually handed over the ten dollars to Charles?"

"I did." Sabrina nodded, feeling a pang of regret. "I rummaged through my wallet, and that was all I had. If I had known, I wouldn't have been so generous with my money at the bar."

"Is that the main concern here?" Pauline exclaimed. "Sabrina, do you even realize who you spent the night with? That was Charles, girl. You've hit the jackpot!"

"You can't be serious, right?" Sabrina shot back, sounding frustrated. "I wanted to distance myself from the Wilson family. Liam is still in the picture, and now Charles shows up. I just can't seem to break free."

"Perhaps this is fate." Pauline pondered for a moment before adding, "Forget about Liam. With Charles, you won't be at a loss. Do you have any idea how many assets are in his name? If you manage to get married to him, you might not even need to be a streamer anymore. Who knows?"

"Stop," Sabrina interjected, her interest in Pauline's argument waning. "I fear I wouldn't be able to stomach an easy life. Self-reliance feels like the safer option."

Pauline pursed her lips and decided not to press the matter further.

Being Sabrina's closest friend, she understood that once Sabrina made up her mind, it was set in stone.

"Fine, let's get back to the matter at hand," Pauline said in a serious tone. "Early this morning, Radiance Entertainment reached out to me. They want you to produce an album, and they claim they are willing to be flexible with the pricing."

Radiance Entertainment?

That was where Rylie worked, wasn't it?

To Sabrina's knowledge, Radiance Entertainment boasted some of the finest songwriters and composers in the city. Rylie herself was a renowned and talented artist. So, why would they need to outsource for an album?

Sabrina couldn't shake off the feeling that something was amiss in this situation.

"What was your response?" Sabrina inquired.

"I haven't given them the green light yet," Pauline replied, shaking her head slightly. "It's a significant decision, and I believe it's best for you to make the call. However..."

She paused for a moment before continuing, "Over these past few years, you've earned a substantial income. But with your grandmother's medical expenses being so hefty, coupled with your irregular work schedule, our funds have dwindled considerably. Once we settle next month's medical bills for your grandma, we'll be left with almost nothing."

Sabrina was shocked by this revelation.

As a top-tier online streamer with millions of devoted fans, she indeed raked in a considerable income. However, she had taken a break for nearly half a year to look after her grandmother. She had assumed her savings could sustain them for a while, but it appeared that their financial reserves were depleting faster than anticipated.

She then lamented, "Gosh, I wish I didn't have to give money away this morning. Even ten dollars counts! I could have used it to savor a piping hot bowl of noodles instead of handing it over to that jerk, Charles."

Sabrina took a deep breath and made a pragmatic decision for the sake of their well-being. "Go ahead and reach out to Radiance Entertainment. Let's find out what they're looking for."

"Very well."

"Oh, and do you remember the person who wanted to buy my painting? Do you mind arranging a meeting for me?"

"Sure!"

After they discussed work-related matters, Sabrina's phone rang, displaying Liam's name. She glanced at the screen, her bright eyes lighting up before they turned icy.

Ever since she had returned to the White family, Liam had been excessively attentive. She initially thought that she'd found a good man, but she couldn't have been more wrong.

Though she was a savvy and astute businesswoman, she ended up falling for Liam's deception.

When she recalled the affair between Liam and Rylie, a wave of nausea washed over her.

Nonetheless, she answered the call in a casual tone, concealing her true feelings. Liam asked, "Sabrina, where were you last night? I've called you countless times, and you didn't pick up. I was on the verge of calling the police!"

Calling the police?

Sabrina couldn't help but chuckle silently. If shamelessness were a criminal offense, Liam might as well be serving a life sentence.

"I'm okay," she replied nonchalantly. "I wasn't feeling too well, so I had a few extra drinks at the bar, and then I ended up crashing at my bestie's place."

"Not feeling well?" Liam's voice came through with a chuckle. "Is it because you're anxious about our impending engagement? Whether we tie the knot or not, my treatment of you won't change. But next time, don't go drinking alone. What if something happens to you?"

In the past, hearing Liam utter such words would have brought Sabrina to tears.

But those days were long gone.

He wasn't the same person he used to be.

He had been secretly involved with Rylie even before their engagement, so who knew what he'd be like after they tied the knot?

"Did you ring me up just for this?" Sabrina felt a physical wave of nausea and had no desire to keep up the facade any longer.

"I also called your mom," Liam continued after a brief pause. "We're having dinner with my parents tonight, and there's no need to fret. They're pretty laid-back. I've had a dress delivered for you, and I'll swing by to pick you up later."

Sabrina initially thought of declining, but after a moment of consideration, she reluctantly agreed. "Fine."
