The man fell silent as he no longer dared to be suspicious of anyone after previously saying his thoughts were on their new chairman. In reality, Mr. Lemos was the bringer of success for their company that was almost deceived by some of the people they were working with them. He learned from the previous incident and was ashamed of what he revealed at the time. Alexander, who he thought made a mistake to Mr. John, ended up making a big decision for everyone.
"Don't speak carelessly, let alone express suspicion. No human is perfect and is not free from mistakes."
"I'm not suspicious of anyone except that truck driver."
"That's the same thing."
The man exhaled softly and refocused on his food. All his friends never wanted to comment especially when it came to the company and the important people in it. Let's just say he was a fool for having the audacity to be suspicious of Alexander earlier without thinking about the repercussions.
Meanwhile, in a room, Alexander was watching video after video taken by several investigators from the scene. Where the videos only contained Robert's lying body and pooling blood. There were no suspicious signs let alone the truck that was no longer there. Alexander scrutinized each part and found only one conclusion, which was that Robert deserved it.
"Sir... how is it? Is there something wrong?"
Alexander turned his head towards the source of the voice. He thought for a moment with several pairs of eyes also looking at him. Yes... all the important people were gathered in the meeting room after getting the news that one of their coworkers had died after being hit by a truck last night.
"There's nothing wrong. It's purely an accident. Besides, there is no street CCTV to further confirm what caused Mr. Robert to be in the middle of the road like he was exhausted."
Everyone looked at each other to exchange opinions with Alexander. There were no street cameras that could help solve Robert's sudden death. Alexander, who had been in the office since last night, couldn't be suspected anymore, especially since the man hadn't had time to leave due to the piling up of files.
"After all, we are not the investigators and police who are authorized to participate in what happened to Mr. Robert. So, I think it's better to stop meeting just to see the details of what happened to the victim. Our job as colleagues is to wish him the best and mourn his passing, not to make things worse by interfering in other people's work."
Edward. The man found it strange that Alexander didn't seem to care about what had happened to their coworker. Alexander's mind was broader and more logical but somehow it felt like a form of hiding something to Edward. I don't know what was really going on, but Alexander's calm face made Edward even more curious about his niece's husband. It was like Alexander had a treasure box so hidden with various riddles to confuse the seeker.
"That's right, Alexander. We should have immediately gone to the funeral home to express our condolences to Mr. Robert's family instead of holding a meeting like this that has nothing to do with the company. Although Mr. Robert works here, as colleagues we should consider not involving the company and make a distinction between friendship and work. There are already investigators and police working in the field and we can only wait for the results later."
Everyone seemed to nod approvingly after Edward's comment. Alexander who heard it smiled slightly and glanced at the man carefully. Edward didn't usually defend himself especially with trivial matters like this. Alexander knew that there was something Edward was trying to say about him.
"We should disperse immediately to travel to the funeral home. Mr. Robert's family informed us that he will be buried today after the autopsy this morning."
Everyone started to leave after hearing Edward's order and only left Alexander and Edward sitting next to each other. Both of them were silent without wanting to greet each other or say thank you. Alexander who began to move and straighten his suit and Edward who remained silent in his chair.
"Isn't this almost the same thing that happened to Mr. John, Alexander?"
Alexander smiled sarcastically after Edward finally said his thoughts. He turned his head and saw Edward waiting for his answer. Alexander smiled in response to Edward's words.
"Yes. An unexpected coincidence."
Edward smiled at Alexander's words which were so calm and fearless. Since the beginning, Alexander's appearance never made Edward calm and always had bad thoughts about his nephew. Although Alexander had tried to ignore his thoughts, it was useless because there would be strange events that would make him feel even more that there was something Alexander was hiding from everyone and who knows what.
Edward got up. "Then, don't you feel that there are irregularities in these two incidents? Especially after you were suspected by many because of your previous decision."
Alexander looked at Edward. The man really had a good instinct to point to himself as the culprit. "And you suspect me now despite knowing that I was in the office all night?"
Edward was silent. Alexander captured his thoughts well and with even more clarity. "I just want you to be careful because this has happened twice, especially so close together."
Alexander nodded in response to Edward's worried words which actually contained an innuendo or rather the man's suspicion of him. "You don't have to worry. I will take care of myself so that I am no longer exposed to everyone's suspicions. You also be careful with your actions and words because not all humans have soft and kind hearts."
Alexander flashed a smile afterward, then walked away leaving Edward silent and watching his departure. Ignoring the man who was his father-in-law's brother with suspicion. Alexander knew very well the look on Edward's face that was so curious about him. Alexander would not remain silent if the man continued to interfere with his business.
Meanwhile, Edward sighed softly after seeing Alexander who had left. He smiled wryly at Alexander's last words reminding him to be careful. Edward could see that Alexander was offended by his words and actions that showed suspicion of the man. It seemed that Edward had indeed thought too much about Alexander to forget his respect for others.
"You're an idiot, Ed," he muttered, realizing that he was not too far away from reality.
