Chapter 9 Positive

Ameera went to Jhon's house early in the morning. She had to see her senior as soon as possible, before he left for work. In a state of panic, desperation, sadness, she came with proof that she was now pregnant.

"Ameera?" Jhon was surprised by Ameera's arrival when he opened the door.

"What's wrong?" Jhon asked curiously.

Ameera was teary-eyed in front of Jhon. Perhaps soon, the girl would shed her tears.

"Come in!" invited Jhon. He invited Ameera into his house. It looked like Ameera had something she wanted to talk to him about.

"What would you like to drink?" offered Jhon.

"I don't want anything," Ameera refused in a shaky tone of voice.

Jhon couldn't understand Ameera's behaviour. So, what did Ameera want that she had to come to Jhon's house so early in the morning.

"Doctor Jhon ...." Ameera took a deep breath, before she said her purpose for coming to the senior's house.

"I want you to know that I'm ...." Ameera stammered.

"What is it?" interrupted Jhon. "Don't keep me guessing! Just tell me! What do you want?" he urged.

Ameera immediately told Jhon the truth. That she was now pregnant, Jhon's child.

"What?" Jhon widened his eyes in shock at Ameera's confession. "Are you sure? Do you have any proof that you're pregnant?"

Jhon didn't just believe it. He asked Ameera to show him the proof. If the woman is now pregnant.

"Proof?" Ameera sneered. It was outrageous that Jhon doubted her.

So, to convince him, Ameera produced her evidence. A pregnancy test showed Jhon the two red lines.

"The result is positive," Ameera said. She handed over the pregnancy test. Then, Jhon took it.

It was indeed positive. At that moment, Jhon was really shocked to see it. This time he believed that Ameera's words were true. Ameera was not making things up about her current health condition.

"What should we do now?" asked Ameera in frustration.

"Oh my!" Jhon couldn't get over the fact that he was about to experience this calamity with his own junior.

"You have to take responsibility for me and this baby, Doctor Jhon," Ameera urged.

"What? Responsible?" Jhon was evasive. "How can I be responsible for the baby? Are you deliberately trying to ruin my career?" he fumed.

"Of course not. How could you think that? You know, no, we did it then. And this is the result of what we did," Ameera protested.

"Why did it become a foetus? I only did it once," Jhon muttered.

"For the time being, you don't need to come to work. I'll think of a way to remove the baby from your body. Understood?" Jhon suggested.

"No!" Ameera refused. "I won't let you get rid of this baby."

"Then, you want the child to be born? What about our careers at the hospital? Don't be crazy, Ameera!" Jhon was apoplectic.

"This is my baby. I will give birth to, care for, and keep this baby," Ameera said with determination.

"Are you sure? Are you ready to raise her alone?"

"With you. We will both take care of this baby," Ameera offered.

"No, no, no. Soon I will go to America and finish my studies. So, don't get in the way of what I want," said Jhon. He warned Ameera quite sternly and almost snapped at her.

"How wicked," Ameera grumbled. She did not expect a grown man with above-average intelligence to say such a thing to her.

"Fool!" taunted Ameera.

"What did you say?" Jhon took offence at Ameera's remark.

"Yes. You are a fool." Ameera was disappointed with Jhon's behavior. She turned around and walked slowly away from him who was still standing in front of her.

"Ameera!" Jhon grabbed Ameera's hand and prevented her from leaving.

"Think again! I just want to save your career," Jhon persuaded.

Ameera swatted away Jhon's hand and turned to attack him. She delivered a hard slap on Jhon's cheek.

"You are ... cowards! Dare to do something but don't want to take responsibility," Ameera taunted before she actually left Jhon's house.

"Whatever! I warned you, Ameera. And don't forget, you signed our secret agreement a while ago. You know what I mean, right?" Jhon mentioned the secret document Ameera had signed.

Ameera remembered that damn document. However, she was not in the mood to argue with Jhon at the moment. So, she chose to give in and walk away from the irresponsible man.

Ameera burst into tears. Her heart was breaking into pieces at the moment. She couldn't think clearly.

"What should I do now?" Ameera asked herself. She was staggering and not paying attention to her surroundings. She was like a dazed person with no sense of direction.

***

Ameera went to work. She didn't pay any attention to what Jhon had said this morning. She worked as usual, even though she was pregnant. She tried to hide her pregnancy from everyone. She had tried to move on and live like a normal person. Just like her other colleagues.

"Doctor Ameera! Please help me to prepare the operating room! There's an emergency patient who needs a curettage," said a nurse who asked for her help.

"Ah, yes, alright!" Ameera was quick to set it up. She ran around carefully.

Occasionally Ameera rubbed her stomach. She could not afford to be exhausted, let alone endanger her unborn child.

"Doctor Ameera, hurry up!" the nurse urged. She could see that Ameera was not as agile as before.

Ameera had tried to be quick. However, this time her movements were a bit slow and she was reprimanded by the senior doctor. At first glance, Jhon noticed Ameera's behaviour.

"Oh my! She's so desperate," Jhon muttered with a chuckle.

"Doctor Jhon!" called a young doctor on the same level as Ameera. She approached Jhon.

"What's wrong?" asked Jhon, looking around.

"Thank goodness you've come. Doctor Robert is still on his way to the hospital, and the patient is already bleeding. We need to remove the baby foetus that died in the mother's womb immediately. If not, the mother, who has a history of heart disease, could...."

"Okay, let's go to the operating room right now," Jhon interrupted. He understood what his junior meant.

Jhon and his junior rushed to the operating room. Once there, Jhon met with Ameera again. This time, Ameera's demeanour looked very cold and tried to avoid Jhon.

"Ameera! Please help Doctor Jhon put on the OK clothes!" Another doctor ordered Ameera.

'Why should I help Doctor Jhon?' Ameera grumbled to herself. 'Can't he do it himself?'

The OK (Operation Kamer) suit brought by Ameera was immediately put on by Jhon. For a few seconds, Ameera didn't say a word to Jhon. This annoyed Jhon because Ameera was like a mute. She only nodded and shook her head. The rest of the time she did not answer when Jhon asked her questions.

"If you're not ready for this surgery, leave! You'll have nausea again like that time during the surgery," Jhon whispered to her.

"I'm fine," Ameera replied briefly.

"Ameera!" called Jhon in an irritated tone. "When you work, be professional! Don't mix our problems with work here. Understand?" he admonished.

"I've always been professional. It was you who asked me to leave the operating room. I don't run away from responsibility. I'm not that kind of person, Doctor," Ameera quipped as she left first.

"Damn that girl!" Jhon muttered. He was offended by what Ameera had just said.
