Chapter 10 More Problems

The Pierce family swallowed Cody's words hook, line, and sinker. They thought the Nixons were going to be richer than ever with this so-called new contract.

Hazel smiled brightly at Cody and glanced at Noah with increasing dissatisfaction. She shook her head and said, "You should be ashamed of yourself, Noah. Aren't you about the same age as Cody? He just closed a big deal. But here you are devouring the food that you have no idea how it came about. Go on, eat your life away while others are making it big. How disappointing! The Nixon family is flourishing with Cody's help. When Charlotte gets married to him, things would improve for us."

The thought of climbing further up the social ladder filled Hazel's heart with joy. It was almost as if she would officiate a wedding between Cody and Charlotte if she had her way.

The flattery gave Cody a swollen head to the extent that he forgot to be humble.

"It's nothing really. I'm just relying on my family's name to open more doors. Besides, I just bought a new car with some of the money I earn."

His face shone with undiluted complacency as he spoke. The idiot completely forgot about the call and turned in the direction of the window to look outside.

Rising to the bait, the Pierces looked at the shiny BMW outside in awe. Caroline couldn't help asking, "That brand-new BMW X7 costs a fortune, doesn't it?"

That was exactly the question Cody wanted to hear. He grinned from ear to ear and shook his loosely knotted tie.

"It doesn't cost much. I got it for the measly sum of fifteen thousand dollars. It caught my attention, so I just bought it. I don't think I'll use it for too long. Maybe I'd buy a Ferrari next."

A great chunk of those seated at the dining fawned over Cody as he lied through the teeth. They all chatted, except Noah.

He knew Cody wouldn't be complacent for too long.

As Cody continued to bask in the euphoria of being the center of attention, his phone rang again.

"You idiot! What the hell have you done? Who in heaven's name did you offend? Huh?"

Cody's father, Lloyd, bellowed from the other end of the line. He wished he could give his son a slap through the phone.

"All our partners called to terminate the cooperation they had with us. Even the bank refused to lend us money. Gosh! I don't know what I did to deserve such a stupid son like you. You want to send me to my early grave.

The company is on the verge of bankruptcy. I have already called the bank to pay part of the debts with your new BMW. Get back home right now!"

The roar was so loud that everyone seated at the table could hear it well. They knitted their brows and leaned back their heads in confusion.

As soon as Cody processed all he just heard, his knees felt weak and his legs turned to jelly. He would have collapsed to the floor if he wasn't hell-bent on preserving his image in front of these people. He blinked hard, thinking of what next to do.

A couple of seconds passed before he hung up the phone and said in a trembling voice, "Ermm... Something important just came up at home, so... I have to go now."

He was already at the door before he finished speaking. Then, he dashed as fast as his legs could carry him after he was greeted with the site of his car being towed away by a towing van.

"Hey! What the hell are you doing? Where are you taking my car?" Cody rushed forward to stop the towing staff, but they completely ignored him.

"You are Cody Nixon, aren't you? This bank has to take possession of this car. Your father is aware of this, so call him for an explanation. Now, please get out of the way," the bank official uttered coldly when Cody tried to hold onto his car.

Without saying another word, he snapped his finger at the towing staff to take the BMW away.

Cody's face turned as red as a tomato. He wished the ground could just open up and swallow him whole.

Hazel, who had followed Cody out, was shocked to the bones when she saw what happened. Her mouth was opened so wide that her tongue soon went dry.

How come the Nixon family was indebted to the extent that the bank came for Cody's car?
