Chapter 7 Surprise Gift

Seeing the slightly glum look on Meagan's face, Zayden brought up something that he thought would cheer her up. "Go to the room and open the first drawer of the cabinet. You'll see a box inside. Bring it here."

Meagan did as he asked and found a large wooden box hiding near the back of the drawer. An exquisite carved design covered the box, which was still emanating a faint, lovely scent.

Zayden took the box from Meagan's hands and opened it, revealing several pieces of gold jewelry nestled inside. There were rings and earrings, but the piece of jewelry that would catch anyone's eyes first was a beautiful gold and jade bracelet. The jade, which was a translucent green, looked magnificent against the gold.

Meagan's eyes widened in a mixture of surprise and confusion. Speechless, she turned to Zayden and gave him a questioning look.

"Well..."

Zayden took out each piece of jewelry one by one and held it in his hand, as if displaying it to Meagan. "I didn't give you anything on the day of our wedding. Consider these my gift to you. Have a look. Is there anything you don't like?"

Under the table, Meagan's hands clenched and then loosened. She was trying not to let her nervousness show. Stealing a glance at Zayden, she found that his cold face looked gentle all of a sudden. Were her eyes playing tricks on her?

Every single piece of jewelry in the box was delicate and skillfully made. Of course she could not find any fault with them.

But the one thing that did weigh on her mind was...how did Zayden have all these expensive jewelry pieces in the first place?

Noticing the doubtful look in her eyes, Zayden chuckled and said, "Don't worry. These are not stolen jewelry. They belong to me."

Meagan's face flushed in embarrassment.

How could she suspect her own husband?

"Keep them," Zayden added, closing the box and sliding it towards her before fixing his deep stare on her. "This is all the wealth I have, and so it's all the wealth that our family has. Now that we're married, you're the hostess of this house, and I'm leaving all this in your care."

"Zayden, I..."

Before Meagan could say anything, Zayden interrupted her. "There is one more thing. I can't come with you to your parents' house today. Please tell them I'm sorry that I couldn't make it."

For a moment, Meagan was stunned, but then she inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.

With a genuine smile spreading across her face, she nodded and said, "Okay, no worries. You can focus on your things. I'll visit my parents alone."

Seeing the relief flooding her face, Zayden shook his head and snickered in his heart. His wife was so innocent that she could not hide her emotions.

It would be a surprise if a woman like this never got bullied!

Thinking of that, Zayden froze, and his heart suddenly tightened. What if she really did get bullied by her family today?

But even if that was the case, it had nothing to do with him...

Or at least that was what Zayden told himself to ease his worries. Despite that, his mind continued to be in a mess. After taking a few bites, he got up from the dining table, put on his coat, and left.

Meagan didn't know where he was going, and she didn't ask. After tidying up the house a little, she left to catch the bus. On the way, she received a call from Chole, who nagged her for the whole bus ride.

"You are taking things too easy! What day is it today? It's the day you have to visit your parents, right? How can your husband not come with you? Does he even care about you or your marriage at all?"

Hearing this, Meagan just smiled.

Chole Laurie was a senior from school who was two years older than Meagan. The two of them had been best friends ever since they met. Chole was blunt and straightforward, to the point where Meagan often joked that if Chole was born in ancient times, she would have been a female knight.

Even now, Chole couldn't excuse Zayden's absence and kept bringing it up. "A broke guy like him should feel lucky to even marry you! But he doesn't cherish you at all, and he's even letting you go to your parents' house alone! He..."

Feeling bad that Zayden was being criticized, Meagan finally interrupted her friend. "All right, all right! I get the point, but actually, I was the one who didn't want him to accompany me today. I have to ask my father for the dowry that he promised me, and I can only do that when Zayden's not around!"

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, followed by a heavy sigh.

"Meg, you gave up a lifetime of happiness for that money!"
