Chapter 8 For The Dowry

The smile on Meagan's face suddenly froze as regret and misery eventually wrapped her heart.

Chole was right. Marriage was something that would affect her for a lifetime. However, she got married without even having a date with his husband first. Now, it seemed that she had given up her chance to be truly happy.

However...

Meagan pursed her lips and forced to sound cheerful over the phone. "It's not that bad. In fact, I am very thankful of Zayden. If he hadn't married me, I wouldn't be able to get three hundred thousand dollars as dowry!"

For Meagan, as long as her mother could recover and her brother could continue studying and live a peaceful life, she would consider these as her greatest happiness.

Making up her mind, Meagan was in a hurry to hang up. "Well, I have to go now! I'm going to my father's house today to get the money. Anyway, I'll tell you the good news afterward. Wait for my call!"

Right after hanging up, Meagan put her phone back into her backpack, and the most prosperous commercial street in Oreburgh came into view. As she stood on the side of the street and looked at the bustling traffic, so many memories suddenly rushed back in her mind.

Finally, she was inside of her father's house. "Oh, Meagan. I see that you're back!" Out of nowhere, Winona's sharp and sarcastic voice echoed in Meagan's ears. She walked down the stairs, acting like a haughty celebrity.

Then, raising her eyebrows, she stared at Meagan, wondering if she had been having a "good" time these days after becoming a married woman.

At the thought that Meagan married a pauper and a notorious hooligan, Winona couldn't help chuckling to herself, finding it very amusing.

Since childhood, she found herself to be inferior to Meagan in almost all aspects.

Although Meagan would wear old clothes that had been bought years ago, people were still praising her charm and beauty. It wasn't something that money could buy.

Meagan was also gentle, so she could easily get along with others.

Even Meagan's grades were always high, and she was like a role model in school.

Therefore, Winona had always regarded Meagan as a thorn in her flesh since they were little. She thought that if she could get rid of her sister, her life would be much better. Hence, even though Meagan had never done anything bad to her, Winona would seize every opportunity and use every method to humiliate Meagan to the extreme.

This time, the marriage to the Whitman family became the solution for Winona's huge predicament. Not only did she escape being together with a man she didn't like, but she also made Meagan miserable. However, she still felt that it was not enough. She wanted to see Meagan flailing in the dirt and suffering all the more.

Pretending to be enthusiastic and happy for Meagan, Winona held the former's hands and said with a mocking smile, "Tell me. Does it feel good to get married? Your marriage was decided by the elders, wherein you didn't see your future spouse until the day of the wedding. How romantic is that? It's quite old-fashioned but very exciting, right?!"

With a wry smile, Meagan pulled her hands out from her sister's.

She didn't like this family one bit. If it was possible not to see them anymore, she wouldn't. She only returned because of the money, but after that, she wouldn't care. From then on, she would have nothing to do with the Allison family.

When Winona saw that Meagan's fragile heart was being crushed, she was delighted in her heart and disdain filled her eyes. Then, she continued to ask, "I heard that my brother-in-law had been in jail several times before because of assaulting others... Then, what is he doing right now? Does he have a decent job? Does anyone even accept him? If not, how will he support you? You know what? If my brother-in-law can't find a job, I can help him! I have some good jobs that are just right for him! He can be a construction worker, a porter, and the likes. What do you think? These suit him very well, right? Hmm... Or I can let him work in our company. I heard that our security department happens to be looking for a patrol dog. He will be very qualified for that role!"

Winona's last sentence seemed to have finally struck a nerve. The next second, Meagan suddenly glared at Winona, who was caught off guard.

Her heart tightened. Something was wrong. In her memory, Meagan had always been obedient, and she never fought back despite all the things done to her. But today, something seemed to have changed in Meagan's eyes.

Taking a deep breath, Meagan stared straight at Winona's eyes and said in a firm tone, "Although my husband has some shortcomings, it doesn't affect his ability to make money to support our family. And by the way... Even if he happens to need a job that badly, we won't have to ask for your help. In fact, why don't you reserve the jobs you just mentioned for my future brother-in-law?"

Winona's expression changed drastically. The smug smile on her face was wiped off, and her lips twitched hard. Raising her voice, she burst out, "How dare you! Do you know who you are talking to?"

But Meagan just answered indifferently, "Why? Did I say something wrong? Being a construction worker, a porter, and a security guard's patrol dog... Didn't you say yourself that those are good jobs in your eyes? You were so kind to consider my husband for those jobs, but he doesn't need it. That's why I asked you to reserve them to my future brother-in-law instead. Aren't I being considerate as well? After all, you're still my sister, right?"

Winona's face turned bright red in exasperation. She had never seen or heard Meagan act this way before.

"Shut up! You are the only one who sees that kind of man as a respectable person. Shame on you!"

Winona rolled her eyes hard at Meagan. She wanted to go upstairs now, so she turned around and snorted coldly. "Don't think that I don't know why you are here today... Unfortunately for you, Dad is not home. It's useless for you to come back!"

"What did you just say?"

Meagan's heart skipped a beat. She immediately had a bad feeling about what Winona said.
