Chapter 6 Time To Go Back To Her Parents' House

Massaging the space between his eyebrows, Zayden took a deep breath and hung up the phone. His face hardened as he thought it over.

He would go back to Ardledo, but not right away.

If he went back there now, he would only alert his enemy who thought that he had died in the plane crash. Who knew what more vicious schemes that enemy would come up with to kill him in the future? It was better to let them think that he was dead.

"What do you want to have, cola or juice?"

Meagan's voice snapped Zayden back to reality. He turned around and met her bright eyes. The smile on her face was as sweet as the drinks in her hands.

But it faltered for a moment as she squinted at him and asked, "What's wrong? You don't look well..."

"I'm fine," Zayden replied coolly. He did not like being seen through like this.

Turning away, he added, "Drink whatever you want. I don't like sweet things."

Meagan froze for a moment, taken aback at his weirdly curt response. Then, biting her lower lip, she trotted to catch up with Zayden.

This time, she hung back a little, not daring to get too close to him. He was close by, but she felt it was hard to truly close to him.

The second day after the wedding passed without any problems.

That night, Zayden left the bedroom to Meagan, opting to sleep on the sofa in the living room instead. He even gave her the only quilt in the house, and settled for sleeping with just a shabby sheet wrapped around himself. Meagan felt a little sorry for him and lingered at the door of the bedroom for a long time. The words, "You can sleep in the bedroom," were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't bring herself to speak them out.

It seemed that what Zayden had told her was right. She needed time to adapt to the fact that she had a husband now.

With a faint smile on her lips, she finally retreated into the bedroom and went to sleep.

It was said that although Zayden was a skilled fighter, he was poor at communication, always acting cold and aloof. But Meagan didn't think that he was as bad as those rumors claimed. Ever since she had come here, Zayden had tolerated her and respected her.

On the third day, it was customary for the bride to visit her parents.

Meagan got up early that morning, feeling a little uneasy.

For most newlywed brides, going back to their parents' house was a happy affair. They would ask their husbands to accompany them, and also prepare some gifts to give to their parents. The whole family would have a happy lunch together, and the couple would return to their own home before the sun set.

For Meagan, however, she wanted to visit her father's home purely to ask for money.

Her father had promised her that as long as she married Zayden in place of Winona, he would give her a large sum of dowry which would be enough to cure her mother's disease as well as support her brother's education.

It had been three days since the wedding, but there had been no mention of the dowry at all, as if the Allison family had forgotten all about it.

After thinking it over, Meagan decided to take the initiative to ask her father for the dowry, but she knew that she couldn't bring Zayden with her. Otherwise, her real reason for marrying him would be exposed. It would definitely hurt his pride and touch a nerve. Meagan didn't want to find out what Zayden was like when he was angry.

"Zayden, I..." She racked her brains to think of a good reason to convince Zayden to let her go to her father's house alone.

But all senses seemed to escape her. In the end, she swallowed her words and forced a smile. "I've made breakfast. Come and eat."

Zayden was doing his morning exercise in the yard. Upon hearing her soft voice, he felt a ray of warmth enveloping his heart, slowly melting the layer of ice covering it.

It seemed that Meagan had made a hearty breakfast; the irresistible aroma drifted all the way out to the yard. When Zayden stepped into the small house, he suddenly felt as if the place had gotten brighter. After their marriage, the house was no longer dark and dusty as it had once been.

It was only now that the house looked like a home. It seemed that when Meagan had moved in, she had brought sunshine along with her.

Zayden couldn't help smiling as he sat down at the dining table.

When he glanced at Meagan, however, he noticed that she wasn't touching her food at all, as if she had something on her mind.

Suddenly, he realized what day it was and asked in a low voice, "Today is when you have to visit your parents' house, right?"

Meagan was stunned; she hadn't expected Zayden to be the one to bring it up. She bit her lip and lowered her gaze without saying anything.
