Chapter 7 Be My Boyfriend

I woke up with a slight headache and found myself inside a white painted room with curtains covering the bed I was lying on. On the side is a drip hung on a pole and connected to the back of my hand with a needle. Then I realized I was in the hospital, memories of the accident set in and I thought,

'Why am I still alive with such a hit from the speeding car? And who is the lady that helped me up and might have brought me here?'

As I lay there thinking of those things, the curtain was withdrawn and the doctor came in along with a nurse to examine me. Then I thought, 'Who will pay for all the expenses after I am discharged, I should get out of here as quickly as I can before I accumulate a mountain of money I can never pay.'

So I decided to inform the doctor that I was well enough to be discharged and ask for my bill so I could leave. He started examining me, starting from my head by changing the bandage and it was when he finally removed it that I felt a huge pain in my head. But from my decision earlier, I had to act as if I was fine even though it was aching badly. The doctor watched me intently and finally spoke to me,

"Young man, who is the lady that brought you here a week ago?"

I looked at him astonished and whispered,

Then I inquired,

"Did you say a week ago? You mean I have been here for a week?"

He nodded and then added,

"The lady has been coming to see you every day in the morning and leaves in exactly five minutes. It's just something isn't right with her, you know she comes rushing in and leaves at the same speed she comes in with. It seems she is hiding or trying to hide the fact that she comes here."

I sighed after his speech and wondered why that particular lady would be acting that way. But that wasn't what I was worried about at the moment, I had stayed in the hospital for a week without my knowledge and I wondered what my bill would look like. But then the doctor broke in again,

"Also, the same lady has paid for your bills for two weeks including your feeding and everything else. You seem to be bothered about something like that right?"

His words caught me off guard and I answered absently,

"You are right, that was my biggest nightmare ever since I woke up. Thank God, an angel has come to my rescue, I was wondering how l would work for the hospital to clear my bill."

Then I heard someone giggling, I looked and saw that face staring right at me with her a hand on her mouth trying to stifle her laugh. I watched her embarrassed that she had caught me speaking that way. She came my way and the nurse allowed her in, and I thought, who they were granting her access to when they were examining me. She touched my head and inquired worriedly,

"How are you doing? I apologize on behave of the Uber driver, I was the one pushing him to get to my child's school as early as possible. Who would have thought my carelessness would end up taking someone's life? I am so sorry."

I watched her approximately and realized that she was truly sorry so I said,

"You brought me to the hospital even though you were in a hurry and you have paid for my bills so I think you have done the best to show your remorse so I believe that it's okay."

She sighs alleviating and smiles once again. The doctor had reached my legs and was unwrapping the bandage from it, I felt a terrible pain oozing from the scars on my legs and I clenched my teeth from shouting. But it seemed the lady had realized what I was trying to do so she whispered,

"It's alright to shout when it's painful, you can't handle all that else your head will also suffer. Let it out."

It was as if she had rubbed in my injury, and I started shouting,

"Argh!! Argh!! It hurts so bad. Please doctor take your time."

They all watched me sadly and shook their heads pitifully. He continued cleaning my wounds and tears started cropping up in my eyes. He finished in a few more minutes but I saw the lady still there with my hand in her palm as she watched me closely but it seemed she was thinking about something.

When the doctor left with the nurse, I saw she was still in thoughts so I clenched her palm and she suddenly became conscious. But then she immediately leaves my hand, I was curious about who she was so I asked,

"Miss, you haven't mentioned your name to me, I mean we haven't introduced ourselves."

She smiled and then said,

"I know your name and a whole lot about you. You know I had to know who you were since I was the one that brought you in here and I am called Miranda. I am a mother of five children and undergoing a divorce as we are speaking. It was for this reason that I was rushing to go for my kids, but I could only get to three of them because of the accident. The other two are with their father."

I watched her surprised at her genuine introduction but then I didn't understand why she had to say all that in the first place. We were total strangers, but she had inquired about me and was saying all that personal issues to me. I looked at the mother of five and was even more surprised, there was absolutely nothing that showed that she had given birth to even one child. Her body looked like that of a virgin instead. She saw the way I was watching her and I smile broke on her face widely than she said,

"I understand your confusion; you are the only one apart from four more people or now a few more people because of my case in the court that know that I have children. I have gotten the surprised look quite a lot throughout this week..."

She stopped speaking and then surprisingly took my hand once again and this time held it to her chest and looked at me intently and said surprising me the more,

"I need your help; I know I owe you one but can I owe you more? Will you be my boyfriend?"
