Her phone's ringtone went blaring off and she snatched it from her bed and looked at the caller.
It was her brother.
Heaving a sigh, she flopped on the bed and put her headphone on then inserted them in her phone before she hit the answer button.
"Hello, stranger," she said.
"Hey, sister, how're you?" Kevin went further to ask.
"Just the usual, watching movies."
"Just called to say I'd be visiting soon."
"Okay."
"You're not excited that I'm coming back?"
"I dunno, I guess I am."
"Oh, come on, tell me what's wrong."
"I need a fucking job, just bored staying here, would be much better in a prison."
She heard his dry laughter from the other side of the call and she rolled her eyes.
"A job, that's why you're sounding mad? I told dad about it and he said he's gonna get you one."
Yeah right, that what he said last year.
"Really?! Thanks, I wait to start living a normal life."
"Sure, oh and I credited your account, get yourself and grandma some goodies, okay?"
"Ok, bye."
She hung up immediately and put her phone on flight mode. She was done answering calls for today.
Man, she was so anxious to see what tomorrow would hold for her.
After a quick nap, she headed downstairs, and for sure, Amaya, and her little son, and even Samuel were with her grandma.
Now she doesn't have to worry about how her grandma's gonna cope without her.
"There she is," Amaya said and walked over to where Skylar stood.
"Aww you brought Isaac," Skylar cooed as she gestured for him to come over.
"Scaya," little Isaac blabbered as he toddler towards her and she picked him up.
"Aww," Amaya cooed.
"Samuel's blushing," Amaya said again, "Come ok, get over here."
"You two look good together," Grandma Susan chipped in.
"Uhm, I just came to have a drink, that's all," Skylar said, shooting the ladies a glare as she dropped the little toddler.
"We get," Amaya said, giving Skylar a smug look.
Skylar let out a sigh and headed to the kitchen. She was also going to need some food, so she checked the pot and sure enough, there were drumsticks and noodles.
"Hey, Sky."
She jerked on hearing the voice and the pot's lid fell in the process.
"Fuck, you scared the hell out of me," she said as she bent to pick up the lid.
"That's so fascinating, by the way, you look stressed out. Something bothering you?" He asked as he slipped his hand into his pocket.
"Me? Stressed out? Pfft, no way, I'm cool."
"Your expression says it all, let me guess, watching movies late at night again?"
She chuckled awkwardly and then gave him a cheeky grin, "I couldn't just resist."
It was so weird to have a conversation with him. After knowing that Samuel had a crush on her right from high school.
It doesn't really matter because he never pressurizes her. He's cool and calm.
"I'll go back upstairs," she finally said and squeezed right through him towards the living room.
Little Isaac ran around the room, with a naked butt and his clothes on his face.
"Oh, come on stay put, Isaac!" Amaya said.
Skylar slightly chuckled and then walked up the creaking stairs.
She'd just have to wait for nightfall, man, she was anxious. She helped on her bed and dozed off, thinking of the good things.
The time flew by quickly and soon Amaya, Isaac, and Samuel all left the little cottage.
It was only her and her grandmother, who was in the dark living room, busy rocking herself in front of the cozy furnace fire.
Skylar hid under the stairs, patiently waiting and watching her grandmother.
It felt like forever till Grandma Susan stood up and left for her room.
It was a cue for Skylar to strike.
She tiptoed to the kitchen and took two drumsticks in a covered bowl and some table water.
Stopping in front of her grandma's room, she creaked it open and entered inside.
She squatted in front of her and studied her face. Grandma Susan's pale face was wizened with wrinkles. It held a great impact.
Luckily Grandma Susan was a deep sleeper and Skylar placed her forehead on her grandma's own and just stayed out before she felt her grandma jerk her fingers a bit.
She quietly made for the door, took one last glance before she tiptoed out, and headed to her room.
After fetching her backpack, she put her laptop in it and the bowl, before exiting the little dainty cottage.
She looked at the door and sighed, well it surely was for the best after all.
She ran as fast as she could before she stopped a taxi and hoped into it.
It was dusk and the soft music the taxi music box played was soothing and made Skylar feel at rest for the first time that day.
She looked at the trees that swiftly passed by and tried not to think about home. How her brother or even her parents would react if she'd gone to the city.
Arriving at the train station with the taxi, she clutched her bag to herself and looked around for a safe spot.
She spotted a bench under a glowing sign that said, "RINKS AND SODAS"
The first letter of the sign, D, wasn't glowing and that made sense to Skylar.
She sat on the bench and let the cool night breeze hit against her skin.
This felt so right.
Her head was almost dropping to her side when the locomotive's engine made a noise and smoke came out from the pipe.
Taking a good look at the cursive OHIO sign on the big platform, she walked up to the train.
"I booked an e-ticket," she said when asked for her ticket.
"Name please?" The young lady asked.
"Skylar. Skylar Smith."
"Seen, you can get in."
Skylar heaved a sigh and put on the hood of her jacket as she got on the cozy train and walked towards the seat beside the window.
There was an elderly lady with a baby, which reminded her of Amaya and Isaac.
Her stomach rumbled noisily which made her cringe her face and sit on the empty seat behind the lady.
She dug her hand into her bag and brought out an airtight bowl that held two drumsticks she'd taken from the pot.
After devouring both drumsticks she put her backpack to her side and rested her head on the fluffy cushion beside her.
Looking at the time on her phone, it was six minutes past nine and she sighed again before she shut her eyes for some night's rest.
She was later woken up by some chattering outside the window and she saw the huge sign, Columbus train hall.
She was too anxious to think about anything else as she quickly got off the train and joined the long line of a queue to book the available ticket to New York.
An old-timer was sitting at a corner, playing outdated music with his jazz.
Some ladies that were dressed in clothes that expose their bodies kept on giving Skylar looks she'd consider as strange.
"One ticket to New York," she said to the skinny nan in the ticket booth.
He looked like he needed some sleep, especially with his sunken reddened eyes.
"More like a ticket to hell," he said, his breath, reeked of cigar and alcohol, "You look like you're running from home."
She fluttered her eyes, "No, I'm not."
"Twenty years ago, I ran from home, and guess what?"
Skylar kept mute, it was obvious that she wasn't comfortable with the conversation.
"Now I'm broke, baby," he said as he gave her her ticket.
"Okay," she replied as she collected her ticket and quickly headed towards the bench some people sat on.
Everyone was with someone and looked jovial while she was just crowded by her thoughts.
Yeah, she'd done many bad things she regretted in her teen years.
"Fuck," she muttered to herself.
"It's my fucking life and world," she muttered to herself.
Sighing in relief when the train pulled up in front of them and she quickly headed to the train to get the good seats before they get occupied.
The journey to New York starts in the next two minutes.
