Chapter 3 Burned In The Fire

"Fire! Mr. Lu, the house is on fire! The situation is critical!"

One of the servants rushed over and reported nervously.

Ezra looked around the attic as it slowly got covered in thick smoke. Then, he stared at Selina who was still holding her dead baby in her arms and weeping. He narrowed his eyes at her. How could she stay still with her dead bastard in such a dangerous situation?

He grew even more furious.

"Let's go!"

"What about Mrs. Lu?"

"What?"

"Your... Miss Selina, sir."

"Let her die on her own." Then, Ezra turned around and left without looking back.

Chaos swirled all around Selina.

The smoke was starting to overwhelm her senses, but she could still hear the hurried footsteps.

Panicked and desperate cries hung in the thick, toxic air, but she remained where she was and stared at her dead baby with tearful eyes.

'In order to love you, I embraced you with all my might and didn't mind your thorns digging into my flesh. They left nothing but wounds all over my soul.

I can't believe I paid this hefty price just to be with you, Ezra.

It hurts...'

With difficulty, she opened her eyes. There was nothing but thick smoke around her and Ezra's receding figure. In the end, the wildly spreading fire completely devoured her...

"Ah!"

Selina suddenly woke up from her nightmare. She put her hand over her forehead as she gasped for air. It was that bloody dream again. It had been hovering over her for years like a net of intertwined vines slowly closing in to choke her to death.

"Mommy? What's wrong? Are you okay?"

A sweet, little voice rang in her ears. Selina looked down at the little girl sitting next to her. She was dreaming again, but it was all over now.

With her daughter Carol by her side, her life was complete.

Five years ago, Ezra abandoned her in a burning mansion. He had no idea that she got out alive.

Another thing he was not aware of was that, at that time, she was pregnant with twins. Her firstborn, a boy, died, but the second one survived.

And she named her Carol An.

She was the most precious treasure in her life.

Today was a momentous day.

Today, she finally returned to her home country. As she watched the city get closer and closer from her plane's window, her heart raced.

'J City... Look who's back.'

Everything that had happened in this city was still fresh in her memory, and the pain that they caused her never dulled over time. But she was different now. She was better and stronger than before because she had Carol.

She had her little angel and a whole lot of new reasons to fight.

Carol seemed to feel her sadness, so she gently touched her face and said, "Don't you like this city, Mommy?"

She had always been a considerate and thoughtful girl. She was also very sensitive and could catch every change in her mother's emotions.

Selina tried her best to keep her face impassive. She looked at her daughter and smiled. "I do, dear. I just had a nightmare. I'm okay now."

Carol blinked at her twice and then leaned in and blew softly on her forehead. "There, Mommy. I've blown the nightmare away. It won't bother you anymore."

Selina could not help feeling touched. She hugged her little girl tightly and said with satisfaction, "Thank you, honey. Mommy's not afraid of anything as long as I'm with you."

A few moments later, their plane slid across the runway and made its landing at J City's international airport.

The moment Selina and Carol walked out of the airport hall, many people turned their heads to look.

It was because Carol was really too cute. It was summer now, so Selina picked her outfit for the season. Carol was wearing a little summer dress that exposed her fleshy arms and legs.

Her face was so chubby and round that it looked like it was begging to be pinched.

Selina thought that her adorable daughter attracted too much attention, so she took her to the lounge and put a hat on her.

Years ago, Viola killed her firstborn on purpose. If she found out about Carol, there was no telling what she would try. All she wanted now was to lead a peaceful life with her daughter in her home country.

Carol tugged at the edge of her hat and said, "Mommy, if I wear this hat, will others not stare at me anymore?"

She was too young to understand why those people stared at her like that.

She did not have a grasp yet on the concept of admiration.

So she was a little vigilant, interpreting attention from strangers as some sort of objectification.

Squatting beside her daughter, Selina smiled. "Yes, so keep it on, okay?"

"Okay."

When everyone finally started ignoring her, Carol looked a little more relaxed. She dragged her suitcase and walked happily in front of Selina.

"Ah!"

Then, a kid cried.

Selina immediately rushed over and caught the boy her daughter almost knocked down in time. She asked him gently, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"

She nervously stroked the boy's arm as she spoke.

Unexpectedly, the little boy who was in a white shirt and denim jumpers suddenly pushed her away with one hand and glanced at her and Carol in disgust. "Don't touch me!" he snapped.

Selina was not expecting such a reaction, so she lost her balance.

She fell on her butt after the little boy pushed her.

Carol quickly stood in front of her and glared at the impolite little boy. She put her hands on her hips and scolded him, "Hey, my Mommy was just checking if you were okay. Why did you push her?"

Although the little boy was in the wrong, she reined in her daughter and said, "Don't yell at him, Carol. Apologize."

"No. He was impolite just now. I bumped into him, but I didn't mean to. You were just trying to make sure that he was okay, but he pushed you."

Her little girl pouted and looked unhappy.

Selina gently stroked her hand to calm her daughter down and said gently, "Well, you were wrong first, so you apologize first. And maybe he didn't mean to push me, too. Maybe he was just scared. Right, little guy?"

She had always taught her daughter to be kind to everyone.

She needed her to see the world through empathic eyes.

There were many bad people around, but there was still plenty of good people out there.

Her friend Moses Sheng was a very good example. He saved her that year when she got abandoned and lost everything, and all her friends at the hospital also offered to help her without hesitation.

In the past few years that she and Carol lived in England, she had received a lot of help, so she was grateful to everyone who supported her as she rebuilt her life. She would remember them as much as those who had wronged her.

Although Carol was reluctant, it was obvious that she did not want to disappoint her mother, so she turned to the little boy and managed to blurt out two words with much difficulty. "I'm sorry."

However, the little boy glanced at the two of them indifferently and said, "Troublesome women."

Then, he went on his way and purposely bumped the little girl in the shoulder.

Carol immediately whined, "Mommy! Did you see that? He... He's a bad kid! An annoying bad kid!"

Climbing to her feet, Selina could not help laughing. She patted her little girl's hand and said, "It doesn't matter. Don't make a fuss over him anymore, okay? Be good."

Staring at the boy's back, Carol yelled after him, "Don't let me see you again! You brat!"

The little boy heard her and turned to look at her with a cold expression on his face.

Selina's heart leapt to her throat and then sank. How could such a young child have such a mature and frightening smile?

She watched him walk away and saw him approach a tall and mysterious man. That figure... It looked eerily familiar.

Was it him? Could that little boy be Ezra and Viola's son?

Suddenly, she found herself thinking of everything that had happened in the past. The fear she thought she had already beaten resurfaced once again. Her hand flew to her chest, and her eyes darted to every possible exit she and her daughter could take.

Then, Carol tugged on the hem of her clothes and said, "What are you thinking about, Mommy? Uncle Moses is waiting for us. Let's go."

It was not until then that Selina snapped back to her senses. She grabbed her daughter and rushed out of the airport.
