Chapter 4 Become His Secretary

Moses' assistant came to pick them up.

Before Selina returned to J City with Carol, Moses had already arranged an apartment for them in advance. As her friend, he was impeccable. He had been nothing but helpful to her and her daughter during the past five years, and at this point, she had no idea how she would ever be able to repay his kindness.

When they arrived at their new apartment, Carol opened the door and saw the decor inside. She happily hopped onto the sofa and said, "Uncle Moses got us a pink apartment. He's so kind to us I love him so much."

Selina glanced at her little girl and smiled. Moses doted on Carol and treated her like she was his own daughter. He loved her so much, too, and that was one of the reasons why despite growing up without her real father, Carol turned out to be a warm and sensible little girl.

Had her job not required it, Selina would never come back to J City.

But her job was her dream and her only way to support herself and her daughter financially.

She could not give up.

She had no choice.

After unpacking and putting away their things, she wrote an email to the company and sent her transfer letter. Then, the person in charge called her and instructed her to show up for work on Monday.

After putting her affairs in order, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. Carol had fallen asleep on the sofa. They had a long day. She was probably exhausted. With a smile, Selina gently picked her daughter up and carried her to her room. She stared out the window after tucking the little girl in.

'J City... I'm back.'

The city's bustling night scene seemed to smile at her and welcome her home. Thinking of everything that had happened in the past, she could not help tearing up.

It still hurt when she thought about her dead son and that heartless bitch Viola who killed him. But what could she do? In the five years that she was away, Lu Group prospered more and more.

She immediately wiped away the tears that rolled down her cheek, looked up, and sorted out her emotions.

No matter what happened to her in the past, she still had a chance to turn things around. She could still have a beautiful and successful present. And she definitely had a bright and promising future with Carol by her side.

When she married Ezra, she had just got an internship in her senior year. After that, she had gone through a lot, and her education had been suspended. Fortunately, her English was good. Even though she could barely support herself by doing some clerical work in London, she pushed through and never quit.

Little by little, she got better and better at her job until she finally won the trust of her boss who then made her senior secretary. This year, because of the company's internal mobilization, her boss had been transferred to J City.

Selina was grateful to her because of all her help.

So even though she was reluctant to return to the city that reminded her of her dark past, she agreed to follow her boss here and do her job.

Moses was more than happy to assist with Selina's transition. He even contacted a local kindergarten in J City to admit Carol for school, which Selina took the girl to the next morning at eight o'clock before heading to the office.

The company Selina worked for was quite large. In fact, the UK office where she worked during the last five years was only a satellite office. The company's headquarters was located in J City. The huge logo at the top of the building was eye catching and a little intimidating.

Standing at the foot of SASA Group's skyscraper, Selina clenched her fists, took a deep breath, and steadied herself.

The company building here in J City had the same architectural layout as the one in the UK, so she had no problems finding the office of her boss. She took another deep breath before knocking on the door.

Knock, knock!

The person inside called for her to come in.

She pushed the door open and saw a man sitting on her boss's chair. She cocked her head to the side, confused. "I'm sorry, sir. Do I have the right office? I was expecting to see Manager Mei."

The man slowly turned around and looked at her. With a gloomy face, he said, "What a silly question you've asked! You do have the right office. You've been reassigned, Selina."

Her heart leapt to her throat when she realized who she was talking to. It was none other than Ezra.

How could it be him?

At the moment, she used up all her physical strength to keep her face impassive. She asked flatly, "Why have I been reassigned to you?"

"Why not? A month ago, Lu Group officially acquired SASA Group." Ezra stood up, put his hands in his pockets, and approached her step by step.

She instinctively took a step back and said, "I see. In that case, I would like to turn in my resignation."

Standing beside her now, he leaned over and whispered in her ear, "Oh, you're going to resign? You just signed a five-year contract with my company. Are you sure you want to breach that contract? Can you afford the damages?"

During the past five years, Ezra had thought about Selina from time to time.

When he saw her today, he could not help wanting to get close to her.

Selina glared at Ezra and hissed, "You... Did you do this on purpose?"

"On purpose? Do you really think I care that much about you? Oh, Selina. After all these years, you're still so naive," he sneered.

Raising her chin and taking a deep breath, she retorted, "Yes, I'm still so naive. I'm a liability, so please... Just fire me. That way, we won't have to work together."

"I have a meeting at nine o'clock. I want all the satellite office's materials ready before then."

As if he did not hear her, he turned around, walked back to his chair, and started barking orders.

"Ezra... Does Mrs. Lu know that you want me to be your secretary?" she challenged through gritted teeth.

"Do my family matters have anything to do with you?"

He fired back.

Selina closed her eyes in defeat. She had to admit that she needed this job.

She had indeed just signed a contract, and there was no way that she could afford the damages should she breach it. Over the years, she had worked so hard to give Carol the best life. She could not let her daughter down now just because she wanted to stay away from her ex-husband.

As for Moses, she already owed him too much. She did not want to ask him for any more favors.

At this moment, she felt like God was playing a cruel trick on her. She had no other choice. It seemed that no matter how hard she struggled, it was useless.

If she quit this job, she might never find another one that was as good. And now that Ezra knew that she had returned to J City, he could go out of his way to make her life miserable. She had no way to win.

She might as well endure because the alternative would be much, much worse. It was only five years anyway. Maybe one day he would decide to fire her because he could no longer stand working with her.

Thinking of this, she clasped her hands in front of her and bowed slightly. "Apologies, Mr. Lu. The materials you need will be on your desk before your meeting."

After walking out of Ezra's office and looking around at everything that was strange to her, Selina found her desk, rolled up her sleeves, and started working. She collected the information of each satellite office, grasped Ezra's schedule, and began to create a system to do all her work.

It was not until 12 o'clock at noon that the meeting finally concluded and she was able to relax and take a sip of water.

She just had a few minutes' rest when her extension telephone started ringing.

Ring, ring!

She turned around and picked up. "Yes, Mr. Lu?"

"Come in here."

As soon as Ezra finished his words, he hung up.

Putting down the phone, she straightened her back, took a deep breath, and walked into his office. She said, "What can I do for you, Mr. Lu?"

"Coffee."

"Sure. I'll be right back."

She still remembered how he wanted his coffee, so she brewed him a fresh pot and served it without sugar or milk.

A few minutes later, she returned to his office and set the coffee cup down on his desk gently. "Here you go."

He glanced at the cup and then picked it up and took a sip. Then, he suddenly raised his hand...

Bang!

The cup fell and shattered on the ground, splashing a small amount of coffee on her silk stockings. She wanted to wipe it right away, but she stopped herself and stood still. She peered at him seriously and asked, "What is it? Did I do something wrong? I'll correct it right away."

"What qualifications do you think you have to guess my preferences? Do you even deserve to guess it? Tell me."

Ezra's words were as sharp as blades.
