Chapter 9 He Is Too Rich

Isaac's eyes widened before he stared dumbfounded at his grandmother. "What are you talking about, Grandma? Have you forgotten that I'm supposed to be marrying Madelyn today?"

"Oh, don't worry about that. I've already called off the wedding." Alannah's expression became serious.

"Wait a minute! What did you say? You called off the wedding? Why would you do that?" Isaac was so furious, he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

Alannah raised an eyebrow at him and her voice hardened. "Why? After what you did to Shirley, did you really think that there was still going to be a wedding? If you want to get married, you have to marry Shirley. Don't you think that you owe it to her? If you don't marry her, who is going to marry her in the future?"

"Grandma, please, no! I promise I'll make it up to her. Please, don't make me marry her! My wedding with Madelyn cannot be cancelled no matter what happens!" Isaac's words hurt Shirley's feelings again.

Alannah held Shirley's hand with determination and said, "I don't care what you think, you have to marry Shirley. You'd better think twice before you turn down your own grandmother."

"Mrs. Su, I can't marry Isaac." Shirley's timid voice interrupted the fierce argument between the two, and they both turned their heads towards her simultaneously.

Alannah shook her head in confusion. "Silly girl, what's wrong with you? Can't you see that I'm trying to help you?" The old woman felt as though all her efforts would be in vain if Shirley decided to disagree with her.

Isaac, however, snatched this opportunity and chimed in, "Grandma, you heard what she said! She doesn't want to marry me."

"Shut up!" Alannah's cold glance was enough to shut Isaac up and she pulled Shirley close to sit on the sofa. "Shirley, tell me, why don't you want to marry him?"

The answer to this question wasn't going to be a straightforward one. Shirley had been dreaming of being with Isaac for as long as she could remember. But unfortunately for her, she wasn't the one his heart desired. What reason could she have to marry him? The answer was so clear. Why would she willingly want to be a burden to him? However, it was hard to turn Alannah down because she didn't want to disappoint her. What could she do? Shirley took a sideways glance at Isaac for help, but he ignored her.

Having realized that he wasn't going to help her, Shirley had to come up with a convincing reason soon. "My sister is Isaac's fiancee; they should be the ones to get married."

"So what? You're the one he slept with. You're the one who should be his wife!" Shirley's face turned red at her words, while Isaac's face twitched grimly.

"Hmm... Isaac is too beautiful for my taste. My best friend advised me not to marry a good-looking man." Shirley swallowed nervously. How did she even come up with such a lame excuse? Alannah started to laugh uncontrollably at her words.

"Too beautiful? That's not a problem. A simple plastic surgery can fix that!" Alannah was determined to stand her ground. Meanwhile, Isaac gritted his teeth in anger when Shirley used the word "beautiful" to describe him. How could this woman diminish his masculinity like that?

Shirley had no idea what she was dragging herself into as she tried to come up with other reasons. For a moment, her mind went blank as she looked at Alannah with embarrassment. Suddenly, she came up with another excuse.

"He's too rich! I'm afraid he's always going to be a target for thieves and other criminals! I don't want to live with a man like that!"

"Oh, don't you worry about that. I'll have our lawyers transfer his money to your son."

"My son?" Shirley looked dumbstruck, her jaw practically on the floor.

The desperation in Isaac's voice was palpable. "Grandma, what are you talking about?"

Alannah winked at Shirley and then looked at Isaac. "Did I say anything wrong? Am I wrong to assume that Shirley will soon bear a child for the Su family?"

Shirley and Isaac were so embarrassed they looked at each other incredulously. For someone of her age, the old woman was still as sharp as a tack.

"Shirley, I'm sorry, but you haven't given me a good enough reason. Do you have anything else to say?"

"Uh..." Shirley sighed as she fell into silence.

Isaac couldn't stand it anymore. "Enough! I've had enough of this!

Grandma, do I look like some kind of commodity to you, that you can trade me off to whoever you want? I am going to marry Madelyn! She is the only one who can be my wife!"

"You..." Alannah was just about to retort.
