Chapter 5 Chapter 5

His voice was as deep and pleasing as a cello, totally mesmerizing.

Suddenly, the temperature in the small elevator surged. The ambiguous words made Kimberly's heart race. Her usually rosy cheeks turned a brighter shade of red, adding a touch of frailty and charm to her.

The girl's innocence made Allen's heart feel a distinct tingling sensation.

At that moment, the elevator door suddenly opened - they had reached the first floor.

Kimberly, as if she had just regained her senses, quickly pushed away the man's hand that was pinching her chin. She casually said, "Yes, I'd like to try again, but not today, let's make a date another day!"

With that, she ran out of the elevator as if she was escaping.

Fortunately, her chin was solid. Otherwise, given the way he was pinching, it would've already been broken!

Allen watched her fleeing silhouette. A faint smile crept onto his frosty face.

"Kimberly?"

He gently uttered her name, his intentions unclear.

--

Kimberly ran to the roadside in one breath, preparing to hail a taxi, only to discover that her phone battery had run out.

She had just gotten her car back from the traffic police station when it broke down, and she had left it at the car shop for repairs. For the past few days, she had no choice but to commute to work by taxi.

However, she had been standing in the cold wind for a while, and she hadn't seen a single taxi pass by.

The dizziness in her head was getting worse, and she felt her forehead - it seemed a bit hot. She regretted taking a cold shower yesterday, which was probably causing her discomfort now.

As Kimberly was hesitating about whether to walk home or return to the office for the night, a black Bentley stopped in front of her.

It was Allen's car.

A wave of anxiety came over her and she subconsciously took two steps back, assuming he was just passing by.

Unexpectedly, the car's window gradually descended, the man inside gazing straight at her in silence.

Unmistakably, he was inviting her to get in.

Having only met twice and not exactly acquainted, Kimberly should have been wary, but she was currently feeling so miserable, all she wanted to do was to quickly go home and get a good night's sleep. Without another thought, she pulled open the car door and climbed in the passenger seat.

The atmosphere between the two became somewhat subtle upon entering the car.

Hoping to ease the awkwardness, Kimberly tried to break the ice, "Um, you don't have a girlfriend, do you?"

Allen, focused on driving, casually replied, "Why? If I had a girlfriend, would you apologize to me?"

Upon hearing his words, Kimberly inwardly rolled her eyes, "Apologize to you for what? For flirting with you, or for suggesting a one-night stand?"

After saying this, she felt somewhat amused and casually chatted a few sentences.

"Isn't it said that the passenger seat is reserved for a man's wife or girlfriend? If you were dating someone, I definitely would've sat in the back. If not, then I will nap here for a while."

Allen glanced at her, but remained silent.

The head of the Snyder family was always low-key and rarely appeared in public.

As for personal information about Allen, the media had already turned every stone, reporting everything within legal boundaries, even going so far as to report the color of his underwear. How could they possibly ignore his love life?

Kimberly had heard early on that he had married and divorced at a young age, and he even has a son with him.

But since his divorce, he never remarried and is still single to this day.

If she wasn't clear about this aspect, she would not have set her sights on him earlier.

However, all those thoughts were just actions clouded by alcohol, impulsive in the spur of the moment; now that she's sober, her sensibility has returned.

Halfway through the drive, Allen suddenly remembered that he didn't know where she lived.

Just as he was about to ask, he turned his head to see the woman, who was just merrily smiling a moment ago, had already fallen asleep on the seat.

In her sleep, Kimberly was quiet and obedient like a small kitten, much cuter than her playful grin earlier.

However, the unusual flush on her face made him furrow his eyebrows.

Allen pulled over and reached his hand towards her forehead. The scorching heat transmitted to his palm.

Was she running a fever?

--

Kimberly woke up feeling groggy and restless. When she opened her eyes, all she saw was white, and an intense smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils, unpleasantly strong.

Was she in...a hospital?

Propping herself up from the bed, she looked around the room and her face turned blank.

At this moment, the door of the ward was opened, and a man walked in holding a transparent plastic bag full of medicine.

"You're awake."

He approached with an indifferent expression, as if nothing or no one could sway his emotions.

Kimberly leaned against the bed, her almond-shaped eyes stared unwaveringly at him, as though she were drowsy.

The twinkling eyes beneath the delicate willow brows were innocent and clear, staring at him like a kitten in need of consolation, making the man slightly soft-hearted.

Suddenly, Allen found it somewhat humorous.

Could it be because it had been so long since he had been with a woman? That he could even be moved by a mere glance.

Allen opened the medicine box, took out the pills according to the dose, and then poured a glass of water, handing both to Kimberly who was still in a daze.

"High fever of 39 degrees, what's the matter? Don't care about your life?"

His tone was light, yet there's a hint of reproach beneath it.
