The next day, I go to work as usual. My weekend was very crazy. I finally feel better, I smiled to my self and left the house.
"Good morning Jordan."
"Vivian!! Good morning too. I missed you. I heard the boss gave you off on Friday. Are you okay? I would have called but i was busy arranging for my wedding.
"Yeah, it's okay Jordan. You didn't mention it to me that you'd be getting married.
"Oh, I forgot, I'm so sorry." Jordan said while giving a strawberry tea to me.
"Hahaha...thank you for this. I appreciate it."
While we were busy chatting Daniel walked in from behind.
"Good morning sir."Jordan said.
I suddenly feel nervous and slowly turn around to face him.
"Good morning sir." My voice was a little shaken.
He stopped for a while and just nod his head. I take a glimpse at him. As usual, his face is always serious at work. This time his face was way different from when he was with me outside work. He looks like he really don't know me and look like nothing happened between us before.
"Vivian, come with me to my room." Daniel said with his deep voice.
"Me?"
"Right?Oh...okay."
Jordan smiled at me.
I walk faster and follow him at the back. Did he suddenly remember me?
He take his seat and only stares at me. I suddenly feel that he looks like someone's father that wants to scold their child.
"Errr...sir..what can i help you with?" I look at his eyes for a second then look away.
"Where's my coffee, I told you to always put on my table every morning? Don't you know your job anymore?"
"Sir....which one should i answer first?"
He takes a deep sigh and continually looking at me.
"Sit down." He ordered.
Vivian put her bag down beside the chair. Frustration built up within Vivian. She cracked her knuckles and tapped her right foot against the legs of the chair, she tried to look out of the window, but to no avail.
Daniel looked at her, he saw Vivian tucking her hair twice behind her ears, but they stubbornly refused to obey her.
He got up from his chair and came near her. Bending down, he held the locks between his index and middle finger twirled it around and gently tucked it behind her ears.
Vivian's heartbeat increased. She did not know what Daniel wanted, but she knew that she would go crazy if she stayed here for too long. She looked up to find Daniel staring at her intensely.
He was wearing a green shirt and paired it with black trousers. A wrist watch adorned his left wrist. Vivian had to admit that he looked more handsome than he did three years back.
They stared into each other's eyes, trying to look pass their soul and see what they had on their minds, for eyes were the reflection of their souls.
Vivian once told herself that, "no matter what, their eyes would never see each other anymore."
"You know, I've been thinking a lot about us, and I wanted to tell you why I really broke up with you,"Daniel broke the silent, his voice filled with a mix of emotions.
Vivian looked at him curiously, her eyes sparkling with a hint of sadness. "Why did you break up with me, Alex? You said it was because we grew apart, but I never really understood."
Daniel took a deep breath, collecting his thoughts. "It's true, we did grow apart, but that wasn't the main reason. The truth is, I got accepted into a graduate program in another state, and I knew I had to leave."
Vivian's eyes widened in surprise. "You never told me that! Why didn't you?"
Daniel sighed, running his hands through his hair. "I was scared, Vivian. I knew it would mean leaving you behind, and I couldn't bear the thought of being apart from you. But I also knew I couldn't pass up this opportunity. It was a chance to pursue my dreams, to make a better life for myself."
Vivian looked down, her voice barely above a whisper. "So you broke up with me to protect yourself from the pain of leaving me?"
Daniel nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "I know it sounds selfish, but I didn't know how to handle it. I thought it would be easier to just end things, to make a clean break."
Vivian took a deep breath, her eyes filling with tears. "But it wasn't easier, Daniel. It was harder. I thought we had something real, something worth fighting for."
Daniel reached out, taking Vivian's hand in his. "We did, Vivian. We did have something real. And I'm so sorry I didn't fight for it. I was young and stupid, and I made a mistake."
"I still love you."
Why was it that it was too difficult to understand all the complex emotions in their eyes? They wondered. They had too many questions they couldn't answer.
A gentle clearing of a throat broke their stupor. Daniel diverted his attention to the door way where jordan stood holding a file in his hands. Meanwhile, Vivian suddenly found the desk in Daniel's office very interesting.
She squinted her eyes at the wood and tried to find some pattern on it to pass her time. What would jordan think? Was what happened in the elevator not enough? Vivian wanted to dig a hole and hide in it.
Jordan handed the files to Daniel and walked away, not before giving Vivian a know it all look.
Vivian's face reddened. "Ah, get a hold on yourself, Vivian," she chided herself.
"Okay, you may go." Daniel said in a calm tone.
