"They are personal reasons, okay, I can't tell you."
"You have got to be kidding me. If I am to agree to this, you know my reasons, but if you don't want to tell me yours, then this is not happening"
"Ok, fine, I will tell you, from what I have gotten, you don't know who I am, but according to the board of directors, I am irresponsible and reckless, so they want to vote me out and sell it to my brother, who has a rival company just because he has a girlfriend, and I am ruining the image of the company, so I want to beat him at his own game and get married to prove to them, I am none of those things.
"But since you are rich and can get any girl to do this for you for free, then why me?"
"Because I need someone who they will not suspect and someone who has something to lose if they don't follow the contract"
"They will suspect me immediately because I crack under pressure and start singing like a bird, so this is already not going to work"
"Don't worry, I will do most of the talking, and just tell people you are shy"
"I haven't agreed to anything yet." I pointed out the obliviousness, so he wouldn't think I agreed.
"Look, it's not going to be a real marriage, we will be married for a year in which I will pay all the hospital bills, and you will receive a million dollars every month during that time period and a hundred dollars at the end of the contract.
"I don't agree, marriage is a sacred bond, and I don't want to lie to Nanny Mary."
"Ok, I understand, but you can at least think about it for some time and then get back to me."
"Hmm I am not sure if I will change my mind, but I will think about it, but right now I have to go.
"Ok, you have my number; give me a call when you have an answer." I waved at him and left the restaurant and went back to the bar. Sophie wanted to know what he had to say and wait till she hears this.
"Hey, you're back just in time. I have a little break right now, and I want to know what happened"
"Well, the guy is crazy. Can you believe he asked me to marry him, and he will pay me and pay for Nanny Mary's surgery?
"And what did you tell him?
"I told him no; obviously, I can't marry a complete stranger just because I don't have money; my nanny raised me better than that"
"What, really?" But think about it; this could solve all your problems.
"Yeah, no, not happening.
"Ok, it's your choice.
"Anyway, I have to go home now. Nanny must be waiting for me. I will see you later.
"Ok, bye." I picked up my bag and left.
Finding a cab home wasn't easy; I had to fight my way into this one, pay the driver, and walk into the apartment.
"Nanny, I'm home," I announced, taking off my shoes
"Nanny, are you here?
"Nanny," I called out to her, but she wasn't responding; she's usually at home watching her show. I walked to the living room to see her lying face down and unconscious.
"Nanny, what happened?" I said, shaking her, but she wasn't waking up. I put my head on her chest to make sure her heart is still beating.
"Hello 911, my mom is unconscious on the ground. I don't know what's wrong; she was fine when I left her this morning, but she is a patient with a failed heart. Please hurry up and get here. I don't know how long she's been lying here; I just got back from work.
"Ok, ma'am, try getting her to wake up; we are on our way."
"Come on, Nanny, wake up, please. You can't leave me; you promised, remember?" I begged, hoping she was alright.
The ambulance got here five minutes later. They tried finding out what made her collapse, but that was useless, which made them rush her into the emergency room as soon as we got to the hospital. They have been in there for a while, and I am waiting for them to come out and tell me anything, but nothing yet. I keep pacing around in the hall. They tried to get me to calm down, but nothing helped. I was worried.
The operation lights went off when the doctor walked out of the room. "Doctor, how is she? Is it her heart?
"Yes, it has gotten worse than before; you brought her in at the right time; if not, she would have been dead by now, but we need to perform the surgery as soon as possible; the machine can no longer support her any longer.
"Please, is there anything I can do now to give her a longer time? I don't have the money.
"It's not just the money, she needs a new heart, and the list of donors is not moving fast enough for her current stage.
"So there's nothing I can do to save her, sorry?
"I'm deeply sorry, but nothing.
"How long those she have left.
"One week at most.
"Can I see her?" I asked, losing all hope.
"Yes, in the next five minutes, they're moving her to the ICU." I nodded my head, too tired to speak, as I moved towards the room. Walking and seeing her connected to all these wires reminds me of the first time she was admitted here and found out her heart was failing.
"I thought we had time to get enough money; now that you are leaving me, what am I going to do now? I asked, looking at her, hoping she would magically wake up and everything would be alright. Throwing my bag on the ground, frustrated, causing everything to fall out, I picked them up to see the card Aaron gave me, remembering the deal he offered.
Staring at the card, I thought, "This could be my last chance to save Nanny, she might not like this, but I couldn't think of anything else." I dialed the number, waiting for him to pick up.
