Chapter 6 Investigation

"Everyone did an excellent job last month. This month..."

In the conference room, Eva Bates, the manager of the investment department, was having a meeting with her team.

All of a sudden, her phone rang. She picked it up and found it was from the deputy CEO, Shelly.

"Ms. Tucker, what can I do for you?" Eva sounded respectful.

"Come to the CEO's office right now!" Shelly's cold voice came through, devoid of any emotions.

"Okay, I'll be right there!" Eva replied and told her employees to get back to work before she headed to the CEO's office.

"It must be the new mysterious CEO. He probably wants to promote Ms. Bates and offer her a pay raise."

"That is what's on my mind too. Ms. Bates, when you see the mysterious CEO later, please put in a good word for us! We also want our pay to be increased!"

Everyone thought that Eva was highly likely to be promoted.

Eva had similar thoughts. Under the envious gazes of the crowd, she walked out of the meeting room with anticipation.

However, when she entered the CEO's office, instead of seeing the new CEO, she saw Shelly stare at her with an icy look.

"Eva, what have you been doing recently?" Shelly questioned in a stern voice.

"Huh? I... I've been making investments for the company." Eva was confused.

"Hmph! Try to reflect on what you have been doing! Remember, there is only one person here who can call the shots, and that's the new president. He has a say in everything! Anyone who challenges him will be punished, regardless of who they are or what they've done for the company," Shelly remarked coldly.

After a few more words, Shelly told Eva she was suspended for investigation and instructed her to go home and reflect on her actions while waiting for further instructions.

Eva left the CEO's office and returned to the investment department, her mind in a blank state.

"Eva, what's wrong?" Zuri asked.

Zuri Simpson, the director of the human resources department, coincidentally came to handle some tasks. As Eva's close friend, she approached Eva with a concerned expression when she noticed her absent-minded demeanor.

"What? Oh, no worries! I'm fine!" Eva replied immediately.

"By the way, I heard that the new president wanted to see you. Is there any good news?" Zuri asked curiously.

Eva snapped back to reality. Even though she was still unsure about what had happened, she had grasped the gravity of the situation.

Inside and outside the company, she had angered many, leading her to suspect that someone was framing her. She even harbored doubts about her best friend, making her too afraid to confess the truth.

"Nothing serious. The CEO gave me a few days off, considering how hard I've been working." Eva found an excuse and then hurriedly left the company.

She decided to think about who she might have offended recently and who could be plotting against her. Besides, she also planned to use her connections to secure her return to work.

Watching Eva walk away, Zuri frowned.

"Naomi, are you aware of the CEO of the Dawgin Group? He offended my sister and faced bankruptcy. Tragically, he took his own life by jumping off a building a few days ago," Harvey said. They were in the most luxurious restaurant in Florisa.

Naomi absentmindedly rested her head on her hand and replied in a perfunctory manner, "Oh..."

She didn't know why she kept thinking about Nolan at this time. She couldn't help wondering where he was and what he was doing.

Whether it was Harvey or Naomi, none of them expected that Nolan, the useless man in their eyes, was in the center of power of the Honory Group now. He simply gave a few words, and Eva was expelled.

When Naomi got tired of Harvey's nonstop chatters, she couldn't help calling Nolan.

"Nolan, don't work too late today. We are going to Delia's engagement party tonight," Naomi said.

It was not only a reminder, but also a concern. She didn't want Nolan to be insulted by her family again because of his lateness.

Hearing this, Harvey, who had been eavesdropping, quickly approached Naomi and scolded him over the phone. "Nolan, how dare you refuse Naomi? She is just—"

Nolan hung up before Harvey could say more. Harvey got so angry that he pounded the table, drawing the attention of other diners.
