Chapter 7 A Strange Advice

In the days that followed, Helena neither encountered Kellan at the hospital nor at their residence.

Alyssa's recovery post-surgery was commendable. Her health metrics matched those of a perfectly healthy individual, so Kellan felt relieved and returned to his job.

Inside the ward, Alyssa murmured, "She pulled through this ordeal. But we must find another way to ensure she's out of the picture. We can't let Kellan discover what really happened before!"

Helena, who was about to enter the room, heard Alyssa's words clearly. She wondered what had occurred in the past that needed to be kept from Kellan. Did Alyssa wish harm upon Jane?

It appeared that Alyssa was more complex than she appeared. Surely, Kellan wasn't aware of this, was he? Regardless, it wasn't Helena's concern. She had her own responsibilities.

Softly, Helena rapped on the door, prompting Alyssa to abruptly end her call.

"Come in," Alyssa responded gently.

"Miss Collins, I've come to change your dressing," Helena said as she wheeled her cart into the room.

"Thank you." Although Alyssa replied with warmth, she observed Helena intently, pondering if she had caught her earlier phone conversation.

Helena removed the gauze for her and proceeded to clean and inspect her wound before replacing the bandage.

"Dr. Leena, your skills are unparalleled. Without needing a heart transplant, I've been recovering. I was telling Kellan that we owe you our gratitude over the phone just moments ago," Alyssa said softly, keeping an eye on Helena's reaction.

"As a physician, it's my duty to give every patient my best effort. It's merely my job. There's no need for gratitude," Helena replied without looking up.

"Dr. Leena..."

"Miss Collins, rest assured, your wound is healing well. You'll be discharged soon."

Once she finished attending to Alyssa's wound, Helena observed her.

Elegant, charming, and delightful. Alyssa seemed the perfect fit for Kellan.

However, considering the recent revelations and the heart transplant issue, Helena's perception of Alyssa changed considerably.

Alyssa watched her intently for a moment, then offered with a smile, "Dr. Leena, allow me to treat you to a meal once I'm discharged."

"Thank you, but I'm busy," Helena responded tersely, and proceeded to wheel her cart out.

As soon as she exited the room, her phone buzzed in her pocket.

Seeing it was her father's call, she sought a private area to take it. Terry's voice radiated impatience when she answered.

"Why did you take so long to answer, Helena?" he inquired.

"I was busy," she retorted. As far as she could recall, she'd rarely received any calls from him. In fact, she only got his number after returning to the Wright family's house from her stay in the countryside.

"What could you possibly be busy with? Your primary responsibility is to care for Kellan, as a devoted wife should. Also, your mother has prepared a feast tonight and invited some friends. Both you and Kellan are expected to attend," Terry asserted dominantly. Marrying into the Pearson family was a significant distinction for his daughter. Had it not been for Kellan's grandfather's insistence on Helena, his younger daughter, Daniela, would have been Kellan's bride.

"I have things to take care of." Helena refused without hesitation.

"Is that so? You really don't have time? Does this mean you no longer want your grandfather's ashes?" Terry countered coldly.

Mention of her grandfather's ashes left Helena conflicted.

"I'll come after my shift ends." She reluctantly conceded. While she could attend, bringing Kellan was not an option.

After ending the call, Helena spun around, only to collide with someone.

When had Kellan arrived? She didn't notice it at all. She had been completely unaware of his presence. However, she maintained her composure, pocketed her phone, and continued pushing the cart. However, before she could go any further, Kellan stopped her.

"Dr. Leena, should any issues arise with Alyssa post-discharge, may we consult you?" Kellan inquired, his gaze fixed on Helena.

"You should approach Dr. Simpson for any concerns. I won't always be around. I was solely brought in for the surgical procedure," she replied.

A fleeting look of disappointment passed over Kellan's face when he heard this.

"Okay, I see."

As Kellan stepped away, Helena added, "Mr. Pearson, it's wise to assess people by their character, not appearances."

"Dr. Leena, what do you mean?" Kellan gave her a confused look.

"Nothing in particular. I have other tasks to attend to. Excuse me." With that, Helena skirted around him and proceeded on her way.

Kellan, watching Helena's retreating figure, pondered her cryptic advice. What was she trying to convey? Why was she so indirect in her communication?

And the realization that Helena was amiable with everyone but him left him with a peculiar feeling.
