Chapter 4 The Divorce Agreement

Helena glanced at her watch, realizing it was dinner time. She noticed she'd prepared an ample amount, enough for two.

Standing up, she moved to the kitchen to fetch a set of utensils for Kellan.

Exiting his car, Kellan held a sheaf of papers. The phrase "divorce agreement" on the first page seemed jarringly ironic in the light.

Just as he approached the door, his phone buzzed. Seeing it was Alyssa calling, he answered. Moments later, he made his way back to the car, handing the papers to his assistant, Rylan White, before driving off.

Helena had heard Kellan's phone ring. She inferred from the sequence of events that he'd been summoned away before he could come inside.

With a mix of resignation and self-mockery, she set aside the extra utensils and returned to her meal.

After dinner, she retreated to the restroom, applying a facial mask.

"Mrs. Pearson." The unexpected voice from behind made Helena jump.

Had this man made no noise while approaching?

"Who are you?" Helena momentarily forgot about the facial mask she had on and turned to face the newcomer.

There stood a man in a sharp black suit. While he was undeniably handsome, his demeanor made him seem impersonal.

"Good evening, Mrs. Pearson. I'm Mr. Pearson's assistant, Rylan White." Rylan couldn't hide his surprise upon seeing the mask on Helena's face.

"Pleasure to meet you," she responded. "What can I do for you?" Given Rylan's appearance, Helena deduced he had something significant to relay.

"Mrs. Pearson, this is from Mr. Pearson. I'd suggest reviewing it immediately." Without a hint of emotion, Rylan presented the papers to Helena, his gaze unwavering and cool.

"A divorce agreement?" Helena's eyes widened in disbelief as she read the title. They had only been married for two days, and in that time, they hadn't even met formally. Was he really proposing a divorce so soon?

"Mrs. Pearson, if there are terms in this agreement you're unhappy with, please let me know. I'll communicate them to Mr. Pearson," Rylan said, clearly uncomfortable with the position he found himself in.

"Okay." Nodding slightly, Helena, still with the mask on, began to scan the document.

Kellan was proposing a substantial settlement.

After divorce, he would give her the villa, a store downtown, and ten million.

After reviewing the contents, Helena handed the papers back to Rylan.

"I won't divorce him," she declared.

"Mrs. Pearson... if you believe the terms aren't fair, please let me know. Mr. Pearson is quite generous," Rylan urged, clearly trying to navigate the awkward situation.

"It's not about the money. Even if we were to part, I wouldn't take even a penny from him. But we cannot divorce now." Helena shook her head.

"Why?"

"It's not the right time. I'll leave when it is," Helena replied cryptically.

The reality was that Terry Wright, her father, used her grandfather's ashes to pressure her into this marriage with Kellan. She couldn't contemplate divorce until she had her grandfather's remains safely back.

Seeing Helena's steadfast refusal and her reluctance to divulge the exact reason, Rylan opted not to pry further. He retreated to a corner to call Kellan.

A short while later, he approached Helena again.

"Mrs. Pearson, won't you reconsider? A divorce might be a good thing for you." Rylan ventured once more, hoping to persuade her.

"No. As I said, I'm not divorcing him at this moment," Helena said, her voice firm. She then headed towards the restroom.

Rylan observed her retreating figure, lost in thought. On the surface, she appeared fragile, yet she showed an undeniable resolve. But, what was the point? After all, everyone knew Kellan's affections were reserved for Miss Collins.

With a resigned sigh, Rylan exited the villa, the unsigned divorce agreement in his hand.

That night, Kellan didn't return.

The next morning, Helena arrived early at the hospital, only to discover a man in a crisp black suit occupying her chair in her office.

The sound of her footsteps approaching prompted him to look up. It was Kellan.
