Chapter 2 Flattery or fakery

Sarah had been eagerly anticipating this evening all day. The excitement came from a love letter she received at work, inviting her to dinner at The Pearl Restaurant. The note was sweet, romantic, and got her heart racing. She couldn't help but wonder who had sent it, although the only clue was a small heart drawn at the end of the note. She suspected it might be her colleague Eric from the office, but she couldn't be certain.

As Sarah left the office, she felt a mix of nerves and anticipation. She had never been on a blind date before, and the idea of not knowing who she was meeting made her a bit anxious. But at the same time, she was thrilled. The Pearl Restaurant was known as one of the fanciest places in town, and she had always dreamt of going there.

As Sarah drove home, thoughts of the date consumed her mind. What should she wear? How would she recognize her date? Would they hit it off? Questions flooded her mind, but answers eluded her.

Upon arriving at the rooming house where she lived, Sarah noticed a change in the atmosphere. Laughter filled the air, a sound she hadn't heard since her housemate Jason left to visit his parents a week ago. Jason had always been the funny one, and she missed his presence. Curiosity got the best of her, and she decided to eavesdrop.

Approaching the lounge, Sarah overheard the voices of her housemate Max, his girlfriend Emma, and her childhood friend and co-worker, Jason. It suddenly dawned on her that Jason had mentioned returning home today, but the excitement of the love letter had made her forget. She wanted to surprise him, but not before finding out what they were discussing.

"-And then, my mom's dog charged at me out of nowhere and pinned me to the ground! It was hysterical!" Jason said, laughing uncontrollably.

Joining in on the laughter, Max and Emma exchanged amused glances. Sarah couldn't help but giggle to herself. It was heartwarming to hear them all having a good time.

"Did you get hurt at all?" Emma asked, still laughing.

"Just a little, but it was totally worth it. That dog is so adorable, he can get away with anything!" Jason replied, reminiscing about the comedic encounter.

Sarah smiled, relieved to hear that Jason was enjoying his time with his family. Jason had always been like an older brother to her, and they had grown up together. They even worked at the same company and shared a room in the house to cut down on expenses. Although they had different aspirations, they always supported and confided in each other.

Suddenly, Jason looked up and caught sight of Sarah standing in the doorway. He bounded off the couch and rushed towards her, wrapping her in a tight embrace.

"Sarah! It's great to be back. I missed you!" he exclaimed, squeezing her affectionately.

Returning the hug, Sarah felt a wave of happiness rush over her. "I missed you too, Jason. I'm so glad you're home!"

Max and Emma smiled at the heartwarming reunion unfolding before them.

"So, Sarah, how was work? Anything interesting happen?" Max inquired.

Sarah paused, contemplating whether or not to divulge her anonymous dinner invitation. But ultimately, she decided to confide in Jason, knowing she could trust him with her concerns.

"Well, something did happen. I received a love letter at work yesterday, inviting me to dinner at The Pearl Restaurant tonight."

Max and Emma exchanged knowing looks, struggling to hold back their smiles.

"Well, well, it seems you have a secret admirer! How exciting!" Max exclaimed, his face beaming with excitement.

Jason looked at Sarah, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "That's fantastic, Sarah! You deserve to be wooed."

Sarah blushed, feeling touched by Jason's kind words. "Thank you, Jason. I hope it goes well."

"I'm sure it will. Just be yourself and have a blast!" Jason replied, giving her an encouraging pat on the back. However, his true feelings about the situation were evident.

As Max, Emma, and Jason continued their lively conversation, Sarah couldn't help but feel an air of unease surrounding the upcoming date. She had only received a love letter and hadn't even met the person yet. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least.

As they were concluding their conversation, Jason gazed at Sarah and sincerely remarked, "Seriously though, Sarah, have a fantastic time tonight. You're incredible, and I'm certain your date will think the same."

Sarah grinned, feeling a surge of confidence flood through her. With her friend's words echoing in her mind, she felt prepared to face whatever the night held in store for her. Excusing herself, she made her way to the bathroom to freshen up.

****-****

Emerging from the bathroom, Sarah felt revitalized and ready to take on the world, only to find Emma already in her bedroom, rummaging through her closet. "What on earth are you doing?" Sarah asked, chuckling at the sight of Emma holding up a vibrant yellow sundress.

"I'm selecting your outfit for tonight. Let's face it, you're hopeless when it comes to fashion," Emma teased, winking mischievously at Sarah.

"Hey, for your information, my style is perfectly fine," Sarah retorted, playfully pouting at her friend.

After some back and forth, Emma eventually settled on a charming floral romper for Sarah to wear. "You look absolutely adorable!" Emma squealed, admiring her handiwork.

"Thanks, Em. But do you think it's a bit...revealing?" Sarah inquired, tugging at the plunging neckline of the romper.

"Oh, come on, Sarah. You have nothing to hide," Emma said with a sly grin.

Sarah rolled her eyes at her friend's teasing, but couldn't help bursting into laughter. "Fine, let's go. But remember, you're only going to stay for a little while. Just long enough to ensure my date isn't a psychopathic killer," Sarah reminded Emma.

Emma nodded, her expression turning more serious. "I understand, Sarah. Safety comes first."

"Oh, and don't forget to give me your bank card. I can't go there and not have anything to eat or drink," Emma added, teasingly.

"For my services," she laughed.

As Sarah finished preparing herself, Emma engaged in chattering about mundane topics and random things, attempting to distract Sarah from her nerves. However, Sarah couldn't help but feel a lingering sense of unease about the date. After all, she had only received a love letter and had yet to see the person behind the words. It was undoubtedly nerve-wracking.

Once Sarah was fully dressed, the two girls made their way out of the room and toward the front door. "Wait!" Sarah exclaimed abruptly. "What if he's already here?"

Emma chuckled. "Girl, he's not going to show up at the house. You're going to meet him at The Pearl, remember?"

"Oh, right," Sarah said, feeling foolish for forgetting. "Okay, let's go."

As they approached the living room, all the guys turned to gaze at Sarah. Jason couldn't help but emit a low whistle. "Wow, Sarah. You look stunning," he complimented, his eyes scanning her up and down.

Sarah blushed, feeling slightly uncomfortable under Jason's intense stare. "Thanks," she mumbled, avoiding eye contact with him.

Sensing the tension in the room, Max cleared his throat. "Alright guys, let's give the ladies some privacy," he suggested, guiding Jason toward the door.

As they exited, Jason couldn't help but glance back and send a passionate look in Sarah's direction. Max noticed the way he was gazing at her and realized he had to say something. "Dude, just tell her how you feel already. Acting as her older brother will only push her away. Besides, someone else might come along and steal her away from you," Max advised.

Jason shrugged off Max's words, still lost in his own thoughts. However, as they strolled down the street toward the bar, he couldn't shake the feeling that Max might be right.
