Chapter 6 James And His Conspiracy

Katherine is happy yet sad as she can't tell anyone about Devon.

Just then a knock on the door gets Devon and Katherine's attention. Devon gets up and opens the door. Seeing it's James, he says "Found the time to come."

James tries to keep his calm and says "Sir, you left with Miss Katherine, but I had to take care of our valuable client."

James pushes Devon on the shoulder and enters the room. Coming over to Katherine he hands her a bouquet of flowers.

Sitting down, James says "Katherine, don't worry I took care of Denny. He's an understanding person. He will wait for you to come back and then we can sell that land..."

"We can sell that land, we as in." says Devon "Have you forgotten, unless I don't sign, you can't sell THAT land."

Making a forceful smile James says "THAT land is not a property of Sunrise Resorts, so..."

Katherine intervenes saying "James, the land is part of a business deal and as my legal half partner, Devon's consent matters."

Taken back James says "What, but...it can't...ok, no problem. Anyways everything is already finalized and it's for the company, so he should not have any trouble."

"For your kind information, I'm in the room." Continuing Devon says "And what's been finalized?"

Taking a deep breath James says "The contract. The contract is finalized. Katherine only needs to read it and sign it."

"James, how can you finalize the contract when I haven't even met him yet? And, please change your attitude towards Devon, he's your boss now. And, as for this contract, I don't want to make any deals with..."

Intervening, Devon says "Katherine, don't be haste. That land is of no use to you or the resorts, so selling it is not the problem. And, we don't have any grudge against that Denny guy. So, first get back on your feet, rest we'll deal with later on."

Surprised Devon is saying they don't have a grudge against Denny, Katherine tries to keep calm as James is here and says "Well, I just thought now that Sunrise is not in any debt, why sell it, but if you think it's profitable, ok."

Devon says smiling "Of course, my grandfather didn't make me the CEO of Osborn Events Enterprises for nothing."

Just then a nurse comes in and says it's time for the patient to rest and says only one person can stay in the VIP guest room.

James says "Oh, I'll stay, I'm her boyfriend..."

Intervening Katherine says "James, you are not my boyfriend..."

James retorts saying "We went on dates..."

Katherine retorts saying "Three times and I told you after the last one, I can't forget Devon and I will not betray him. Fullstop."

The nurse says "Please, if neither of you are related then I'll have to tell you both to leave."

Devon says "I'll stay. I'm a family friend and her business partner."

The nurse says "Ok, in that case, will you take responsibility, you see she might need a minor check up related to her file, we need family acceptance for it."

"Yes, I will take full responsibility as a family acquaintance. Don't worry. What ever test are required, please take care of them."

The nurse smiles and says "Good, then you can fill the form in the morning when the reception opens."

Smiling Devon says "Sure."

The nurse tells James he has to leave.

As James leaves, Katherine says "Why are we selling to that mur..."

Intervening, Devon says "No, one knows that and he was a pawn. There's a mastermind behind him. We need to get to him first. (sitting beside her) Katherine, he came that day on someone's order and got bailed as well. You know he was imprisoned for life-in-prisonment, still he got bailed and is free since then. Today he's actually buying land for 600 million. That is no joke."

Suddenly remembering, Katherine puts her hand on Devon's chest and says "You were shot, why did you lie to me?"

Confused, Devon says "Lie to you? When did I lie to you?"

Katherine says "You said you had a heart transplant whereas you had a surgery to remove the bullet. Oh, you said heart transplant cause you couldn't say about your bullet wound in front of me back then..."

Getting a bit serious, Devon says "Katherine, I did get a heart transplant back then. (seeing Katherine is confused, Devon shows her his heart transplant scar) When I was shot, the bullet was lodged near to my heart. The doctor said, if he removed the bullet, it would graze the heart causing a heart failure that I would not come back from. So, he suggested that I get a heart transplant. That way the bullet got removed and I got a new heart as well."

Katherine gets sad on hearing and says "I'm sorry, it's all cause of me. I searched on the internet and found a person with a heart transplant has to take medications for life and is prone to infections and...and..."

Devon says "Hey, it's not that bad. Thanks to the transplant, I got to live and I always had the hope of seeing you..."

Intervening Katherine says "But, why did you leave?"

Devon gets a bit sad and says "Let's not talk about that. What matters is we are together..."

Katherine gets angry and says "No, it's not ok. If you love me then tell right now."

Devon says "Ok, after the police found you, you were traumatized. And, you also suffered a little amnesia. You didn't remember my parents, and aunt Benny either. But you used to ask about me. When aunt and uncle felt you were better, they brought you to the hospital to meet me, but on seeing me, you screamed and then fainted. It happened a few times then they decided not to bring you in front of me. Then I got discharged and at home also it was the same. That's when dad decided to take me to France. He got a business offer and I needed to recover and you also could not stand my sight, so it all seemed correct at that time. Tough from what I know, dad and uncle waited for you to be ok in seeing me. And..."

Getting angry, Katherine says "Devon, you knew about me then why did you not try to contact me even once? I always felt I could not contact you cause you were inured cause of me, you might resent me, but you knew everything, why didn't you?"

Taking a deep breath, Devon says "I did." (Katherine gets shocked on hearing he did)

Continuing Devon says "I did, I sent you texts, and they were read but you never replied. (Katherine was about to say something) A few days back I found the number is not with you. And you have been using a different number for a couple of years now. Now, who was reading the texts, and why you didn't know about them, I don't know. It could be uncle, and it could be someone else."

Katherine says "Devon, why would dad hide them from me and do you know dad and uncle Tim talked practically daily on the phone?"

Devon says "Yes, and he would always change the subject whenever dad would ask about you and dad told me, it seemed like he wanted me to live on with another girl, why I don't know."

Katherine says "As far as I remember, the number I had was lost and dad said it was closed and he got me the new one, (showing her phone) I'm still using it. Maybe whoever has the number, didn't reply cause they didn't know you."

Devon says "That's a probability. But, I still need to confirm it. For now, go to sleep and we'll talk in the morning. I'm going to..."

Katherine says "Can't you stay?"

Devon looks reluctant but says "Ok, but I'll leave early in the morning, before the nurse comes on her rounds. I don't want any trouble."

Making a cute baby face, Katherine says "Ok, ok."

As Devon goes to sit on the sofa, Katherine says "Hey, where are you going?"

A little confused Devon says "On the sofa, you told me to stay here for the night. So, I'll sleep here."

Sulking Katherine says "I meant over here (she pats on the side of her bed)."

Giving a strict look Devon says "Miss, not before we get married, so better close your eyes and go to sleep, and if you pester, swear I'll go to the other room."

Katherine waves her hands and says "No, No, I'm sleeping and going to dream we are together."

Devon smiles and waits to see her fall asleep. As soon as she falls asleep, Devon also goes to sleep.

Katherine peeks to see if Devon is sleeping. On seeing he is asleep, she gets up quietly and goes over to Devon and sits beside him and slowly kisses on his forehead. Whispering she says 'You can't stop me from kissing you.'

Then she goes back to bed and goes to sleep.

In the morning Devon gets up early and check on Katherine and then leaves the room. In a while the nurse comes to check on her and Katherine wakes up. Seeing the sofa is empty, she understands he's gone to his room.

Seeing she is getting a little sad, the nurse says "Miss, your boyfriend has been dealing with the paperwork, that's why he is not here. The report just came in, you will have to stay for two days. So, he's arranging for your stay. He just came back (she points to a luggage) with your basic necessities. I'll be back to take you to the examination room in a while.

As the nurse leaves, James enters and says "Katherine, Devon told the staff you will stay here for two days and said to take care of stuff. I came as soon as I could. How are you?"

Sitting up Katherine says "James, as the PR, don't you think you should look over the office matters?"

James says "Yes, but you..."

Just then the nurse comes in and says "Miss, your boyfriend has completed the formalities. Please change into this robe, I'll come to take you for the examination."

James speaks abruptly "What boyfriend? He's her business partner."

The nurse looks at them, So Katherine says "James, who's my boyfriend, I don't think I need to tell my PR about that."

The nurse leaves them.

As the nurse leaves, Katherine says "James, you know my parents passed away, and I don't have any immediate family near me. And now, Devon is my immediate family, so please don't create any ruckus, and go to the office and do your job."

As James comes out of Katherine's room, his phone rings. On receiving the call a voice on the other side says "James, what the hell is going on?"

Getting angry James says "Jessica, how many times have I told don't call at unexpected times. What if I was still inside?"

Jessica says "Quit the crap. You are nowhere close to what you said you would get, and you are questioning me? Listen to me and listen with open ears. I don't like to say things twice, and you have tested my patience way too much. Now get the resorts or else, you know me."

As the call disconnects, James thinks about what he should do to make Katherine marry him. Why is she still waiting for Devon? Just then Devon comes out and sees he's still standing here.

As Devon was about to say something, the nurse comes and says "Mr Devon, we are ready."

Devon says "Ok, which room?"

The nurse says "Oh, down the hall, gate number four. Ask for Dr. David."

Saying thanks Devon goes back in and says "Katherine, let's go."

He pulls the wheelchair the nurse had left a while back for Katherine to get on, but Katherine lifts her arms up.

Seeing her, Devon says "What?"

Making a cute baby face Katherine says "I'm not getting in that. Pick me."

A little shy Devon says "Katherine, James is out..."

Getting loud a bit, Katherine says "So, what, he knows we are pretending to be a couple, now pick!"

Knowing he can't outwit Katherine here, Devon picks her up bridal-style and as he comes out with her, James says "Where's the wheelchair?"

Katherine says "Why are you still here and not at the office? Let's go Devon."

Devon walks off with Katherine.

As Devon goes off with Katherine, James says to himself 'Damn these Devon's. One is in France and now him. Looks like I'll have to deal with him first.

As the doctor takes the sample, he says "Ok, you can take her back for now, the result will be ready in an hour. And, (pointing to the wheelchair the doctor says to Devon) you can use that."

Katherine retorts saying "Oh, no doctor, my fiance will take me."

As the doctor is smiling, Devon bends to life her and says "Ok, then I'll take her back to the room, and thank you doctor."
