Chapter 5 Katherine Recognizes Devon

As Ron stops the car, he and Devon get out of the car. Ron escorts Devon to the gate and rings the bell.

Katherine opens the door. As she opens the door, Ron says "Ok, I'll take my leave." And leaves.

Katherine smiles and says "Come on in, I hope the dinner I prepared, well Aunt Benny cooked, but I told her the menu."

Devon smiles and says "I'm sure it will be tasty. No matter how delicious hotel food is, it can't compare to home cooked food."

Though it was a faint memory, Devon still remembered Aunt Benny's cooking.

As Katherine escorts Devon to the dining room, Aunt Benny comes and greets "Mr. Devon..." As she looks at Devon, she instantly recognizes Devon, but because of Katherine, doesn't say and says "This way please."

As they sit and eat, Devon says "Katherine, you really didn't have to go through all of this trouble. One dish would have been enough."

Smiling Katherine says "Devon, when I came back home, I kinda googled your company and my God, Sunrise Resorts isn't even quarter of your expectations. I think your staff goes to better places."

Devon thanks God that Katherine searched about Osborn Event Enterprises and not him as in Devon Osborn or else she would have known about him being her Devon.

Trying to change the topic, Devon says "Well, let's forget about that and enjoy the meal. Ah...may I call you Aunt Benny?"

Aunt Benny obliges by nodding her head.

Continuing Devon says "Aunt Benny, the food is really tasty."

As Aunt Benny is serving the food, Katherine says "Aunt Benny, you're neither serving the peanut butter glazed ham nor the crispy potato salad with peanuts. I especially told you to make these dishes as peanuts are Alexin's trademark. Please Devon have some."

Devon is perplexed as he is allergic to peanuts. He understood Aunt Benny recognized him the moment she served all of the other dishes except the peanut dishes. But now with Katherine, he was in a turmoil.

Devon gathers some strength and says "Ah, sorry but I'm allergic to peanuts. I can't..."

Katherine says "Oh? Really, my Devon was, is allergic to peanuts. Silly boy nah, he grew up in Alexin and is allergic to peanuts. You know I used to tease him about it. Once I even dared him. I said if you like me, eat them. He ate them, then he spent the next week at the hospital." (Looking at Devon) "That's why I know he will come for me. If I mattered to a five year old, how will I not matter to a twenty-three year old?"

Devon gets a bit emotional on hearing Katherine talk about him, but manages to control his feelings and says "He's really lucky to have you. He'd be a fool, if he didn't come for you. I'm sure he will find a way to come here."

As they finish the food, Katherine says "A cup of coffee or a soft drink?"

A little surprised as to why was Katherine doing or telling everything Devon likes, he says "Pardon, coffee? Ah, sorry but because of my health I have to avoid these drinks a bit."

Remembering Katherine says "Oh, yes, you had a heart transplant (When Katherine says Devon had a heart transplant, Aunt Benny stops doing the work she was doing and Devon notices her). Sorry, I totally forgot. Devon, I won't give you a reason for any complaint from now on. I'll remember everything."

Devon says "It's ok..."

Intervening Katherine says "Devon, you said you had the transplant when you were a little boy, what happened?"

Devon thinks for a second and then says "I was born with a weak heart. The doctor said it's the only option, so got it done."

Katherine says "Devon, what's your blood group?"

A little taken back, Devon says "What? Blood group?"

"Yes, I think it's important for me to know some stuff like blood group, the medications you are taking and your parents phone number." Katherine says as she is watching the moon from the window.

Trying to change the topic, Devon says "I thought my mom was back home, but looks like you want to take her place."

Laughing Katherine says "What? Of course not, I'm just concerned."

Smiling Devon says "Don't worry, overall I'm healthy. You don't have to worry about me as such."

"Oh, that's good. And, oh I forgot to tell you, for now my staff will help you, but tomorrow we'll post ads for your staff.."

Intervening, Devon says "Oh, you don't have to do that. My staff will come tomorrow. You see, I can't take risks with my work. Though I always prefer interns, but at the present I need staff that can take over immediately and if needed look after without me. So, the staff that's coming already works for me over at Osborn's"

"Oh, then that's good." Continuing, Katherine says "So, what's your next step or plan?"

"Well, I guess I need to know why is Sunrise Resorts not pleasing the people..." Devon says in a blunt tone.

Just then Katherine gets a call and on receiving it she says "Yes, Vilmer could you not talk about this at the office? Ok, arrange an appointment. I'll...no...we'll meet him tomorrow." disconnecting the call Katherine says "Devon, it was Vilmer, my lawyer. There's an empty plot that belongs to dad. Ah...what's his name....Ah, yes, Denny (Devon instantly freezes on hearing the name), Denny, he's the person interested in buying the land. Since you are my business partner. We'll go together."

Devon instantly remembered it was a Denny guy who shot at him and kidnapped Katherine as well. Is it a coincidence or is he back.

"Ah, Katherine, this Denny guy, have you met him before?" Devon asks anxiously

"Ah, no, but James has met him. He says he's a millionaire and can give a hefty price for the land." In a sad tone Katherine continues saying "Though I don't want to sell, but I have no option. I need the money."

Devon says sarcastically "How much? Our contract has benefited you 700 million dollars, do you still need more? I don't think you have that much debt? And if you do need more, then can't you tell me?"

Getting anxious Katherine says "Oh, no don't get me wrong Devon. That's not what I meant. 700, it's more than I'll ever need and I have no debt anymore. (calming down) The reason I'm selling is cause that land has been one of the reasons dad was always in trouble. So, I kind of feel like the land is jinxed."

"Jinxed, Katherine in today's modern world do you really believe in jinx? Come on, as far as my business mind is going there must be a plus point that you are not seeing." Continuing Devon says "Till date how many people have tried to get the land?"

Thinking for a second, Katherine says "Oh, Nine, Denny included."

"Nine, so eight were rejected by your father (Katherine nods a yes), and now this Denny is the next one and I presume he contacted your father and..." As Devon was speaking Katherine stops him mid-way and says "NO, no, that's not it. After dad's death, James found him and said he would pay a hefty price that could help me clear my debt."

"If so, your debt is clear, then why are you entertaining him?" continuing Devon says "Just tell him the deal is off."

"I didn't get the time, but that's not the issue. The issue is James sent him the quotation and he has accepted it. The quotation is for 400 million dollars." Katheirne says getting a bit angry "I really am pissed with James, but..."

"Katherine, is he only a college mate or...." Katherine stops Devon mid-way and says "Devon, I told you I got engaged when I was a little girl. And though he has left, I'm still loyal to my relation so I never had an affair. (Looking like her guilt was caught) Though I have been socially inactive cause of my trauma, but I think even if I had a normal life, I w.o.u.l.d (Katherine says would a little longer) be loyal. (Getting frustrated) Ok, I did go on a data, no two dates with James, but I was angry at Devon, (looking at Devon sitting in front of her, so as to not confuse him) my Devon, Devon Clement. I was angry at him for not contacting me. I mean like we are twentythree, when will he come, when I'm old. Silly boy doesn't even have a social media account. His business account also has nothing about him, Just (in a teasing tone) our CEO this...our CEO that...the CEO...blah, blah, blah. Sometimes I wonder if he still is a human."

Just then aunt Benny comes and says "Children, it's getting late. You should hit the beds."

Both agree and wish a goodnight. Devon goes to the guest house while Katherine goes to her room. Back at the guest house Devon thinks is this Denny really the Denny who caused them the misery that separated him from Katherine. That caused ehr trauma and his suffering.

In the morning, Katherine comes over to the guest house and says "So, are you ready to go?"

Smiling Devon says "Yes, but why did you come over here? I was going to come."

Katherine says "Devon, you are still a guest. Enjoy it for a few days, then we can be normal. Oh, I also wanted to know, where are you buying your residence?"

Remembering Devon stays in France and now he's here, Devon says "Well, I didn't have plans to stay, but now I'll think of something."

Smiling Katherine says "Well, let's go!"

As they reach the place, Devon sees it's really Denny so that means he did get out on bail back then. Devon sees he's still the same, and worries if Katherine might recognize him.

Just then James comes forward and signals them to come over. Devon turns the engine off and both get out of the car. As they go over to them, James says "Katherine, Mr Denny has seen the land and has agreed to pay 600 million, he's willing to give 200 more on the contract as interest. So, let's sign the paper and get over with it."

With a stern look, Devon says "Let's sign the paper? Are you not the PR?"

Getting a bit angry, James says "You might be her business partner but..."

Denny cuts James sentence mid-way and says "And you might be..(he looks towards Devon), you see I didn't know Miss Katherine had any business partner."

Devon says "I met Miss Katherine a few days back, and the contract wasn't planned, it just happened. Anyways, I hope you know that our business partnership is 50-50, so only Katherine's signature is not going to work. And, I'm 100% sure I haven't signed any contract since I've come."

Denny says "Oh, no problem in that. This land is lying around useless and Miss Katherine has to pay useless land taxes for this land. I'm just doing a favor to her. Sign the contract and sell this land to me."

As they were having the conversation, Katherine was looking at Denny and began to have flashbacks of the incident. She saw Devon take the bullet for her and fall down. And then the man came over and picked her up. She saw Devon held onto her hand till the end, before the man hit on his hand making him let go of her hand. Then she looks at Denny and faints.

Seeing Katherine has fainted, Devon quickly bends down and lifts her head and says "Katherine what happened?" He quickly lifts her up bridal-style and runs to the car and drives off.

At the hospital, Devon sits beside her and waits for her to regain her consciousness. Soon Katherine wakes up screaming 'DEVON' and hugs Devon saying "Don't ever leave me, EVER."

Confused and worried Devon says "Katherine, are you ok? What happened?"

Katherine raises her head and says "You came back and you didn't tell me, Devon Clement."

Shocked she took his name, Devon says "What? What did you call me?"

Katherine takes hold of Devon's left hand and with her finger traces the scar on his wrist and says "This is where he hit you to make you let go of me. And, dad and uncle lied to me, you didn't get into an accident, you were shot, you took the bullet for me. When I first saw the scar, I so badly wanted to ask but couldn't. Today, I can't believe, the one responsible for our misery was in front of me, Devon, wasn't he in jail, I mean life-in-prisonment."

Devon hugs Katherine and says "I'm sorry. I so badly wanted to tell it's me, but with uncle's death and your hatred, I was afraid you would hate me as well. So, I thought of clearing dad's name and capturing the real culprit first. As for Denny, I also found out on coming here that he got bailed back then. But, now that you know, let's work together."

Smiling Katherine says "Yes, and when we go back, the first thing I'm going to do is tell..."

Intervening Devon says "No, you can't tell about us. Katherine, uncle was murdered. And, Denny got bailed after such a serious incident. Uncle was blackmailed, you said so yourself, and now when dad came here, he got framed for uncle's death. Whatever it is or whoever it is, we need to find out first. I'm sure it is not as simple as it looks."

Getting sad Katherine says "Then I have to continue cursing you?"

Laughing softly Devon says "Curse or praise, I know you love me."
