Chapter 7

Mr Lincoln entered just as I was in a struggling process with the nurses. I was battling with the nurses because they didn't want me to leave the hospital. The doctor told me to wait for five more days . I checked the wall clock severally, occasionally with no rest as day turned into night and night turned into day.... The doctor had told me that the wound had healed.

It was two days left, but when the time came, I went to check Promise, who was also eager to go home. I told her that I was going to come back, that if I got home, I would take our clothes and then we would goto an hotel. She didn't agree with me but insisted on following me home.... I called the doctor, and the doctor said he was going to prescribe some drugs for her to use and that she could go home.

I didn't want Promise to go home with me. I gave the doctor a sign, so the doctor said, ''You still have to be admitted till tomorrow''. I could see tears in her eyes. ''Doctor, next week is my birthday'' cried Promise.. ''What could I do now?'' was the question that came to my mind. I didn't want Promise to cry. I turned my back, making my way towards the door and she said '' Small mum, promise me that you would come for me today''.

Sure, I was going to do that. I didn't want to leave her alone at the hospital. So I quickly replied. ''Yes''. I pecked her on her soft reddy and chubby cheeks, then I smiled at her, waiting to receive hers also, until she finally gave it out...

I dashed out of the hospital and ran home. When I got home, I was surprised. I thought Rose said that my house was already demolished. Just in the midst of my thought, I saw two of my neighbours, who lived two houses opposite mine. They smiled at me, then I became curious to know what happened.

I voiced out and said ''Good evening sirs''. Someone told me that my house was already demolished''. Yes, replied the neighbours. I continued; ''So, now I am here''. I couldn't continue to talk, as I felt great pain on my leg. One of the neighbours then replied, '' Yes, but somebody owns it now as you can see''.

Great fear appeared in between me. They asked me to look at my left hand side, so I did but to my greatest surprise, my clothes; my belongings and the new ones I bought for Promise were outside.. I didn't have a suitcase so my clothes were on the floor. The men laughed at me. My undies were on the floor. I became ashamed and ran towards my clothes, packing them.

The man who was the second neighbour said '' Uhm, Less I forget, the man who built this house said you should see him by next two weeks Monday''. I replied '' OK''... I made my way back to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, I stood in front of the gate and remembered that Monday was already getting closer. The next two weeks Monday was Promise's birthday. I frowned because I had no money on me and I haven't started working.

I entered the hospital through the gate, then I felt that something had fallen from my hand.....
