Chapter 5 Job Interview

When Marina arrived for the interview, she saw many people in the waiting area. 'Are they all here for the interview? It's really crowded.' Although she had a lot of experience, she felt a little nervous about this interview. All of a sudden, she thought that it hadn't been a wise decision to bet with her son.

The position of Michael's secretary must be very popular. After all, Michael was a very eligible bachelor. Any woman that he took a fancy to would live a rich life. Therefore, many women were vying for this position. They knew that only by getting the job could they have a chance to get close to Michael. But Marina, who had a child, was only interested in the salary.

One by one, women came out of the interview room with a dejected looks on their face. 'They must have failed the interview. But is this interview really that difficult? I have to wait for thirty more people! I don't know how Mike is doing. How could I leave a five-year-old child alone outside? I'm an irresponsible mother.'

When Marina was still thinking about her son, she heard someone announce, "Next one, Marina Mu."

'Weren't there thirty other interviewees in front of me? Well, that was fast.' She took a deep breath, raised her head, and walked into the interview room.

After Marina handed over her resume, the interviewer carefully looked at her up and down. The woman in front of him was wearing a business suit, and she had a good figure. But when he saw her face, he was greatly disappointed. 'Well, Miss Lu asked us not to pick a beautiful secretary for Mr. Michael, so I guess this woman would be a good fit. Besides, she has worked in France for six years, so she must be a very capable secretary.'

The interviewer asked, "What's your special skill?"

"I will prepare the perfect coffee for my boss and meticulously arrange his schedule. I also know French, English, and Spanish."

'Ah, this woman is really skilled and capable. But alas, it's a pity that such a cultivated woman has such a hideous face.'

Seeing the man in front of her looking at her up and down, Marina knew what he was thinking. Before coming to the interview, she had made herself look ugly on purpose. If she had come here looking like she had to all her other job interviews, she would be in trouble. She didn't want to deal with those lecherous men anymore.

"Well, you know a lot. You'll make a good secretary. I want you to come to work tomorrow."

Marina couldn't believe her luck. Now that she had gotten the offer, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. Then, she heard the interviewer tell someone, "Call the candidates and tell them that they don't have to come anymore. We've already found the right person."

After the interview, Marina was happy that she had gotten the position she wanted. She headed to the cafe to pick up Mike. Today was his birthday, and she had promised to take him to the amusement park. But since it had taken her four hours to finish the interview, there was no time to take him there.

When she arrived at the cafe, Marina looked around and finally spotted her son. She ran to him with concern. "Mike, I'm sorry I'm so late. Are you all right?"

Mike rolled his eyes at her. "Silly Mommy, why didn't you call me? I thought you got lost inside. I was really worried about you. If you didn't show up soon, I was going to run into the office to find you."

'Why did he call me silly Mommy? I'm not a fool, ' Marina thought irritably. She pinched Mike's face and said, "Don't call me silly Mommy from now on. Don't forget that I'm your mother. You can't be so impolite. Do you understand?"

Mike thought to himself, 'Mommy is really silly. Otherwise, why doesn't she know who my father is?' He had known that he was different from the other kids since childhood. He was not as childish as them. On the contrary, he was very precocious.

"Mommy, I want to go to KFC. You didn't allow me to eat there before. But today is my fifth birthday. You won't refuse my request, will you?"

'I guess it's okay to eat junk food occasionally, ' Marina thought grudgingly to herself. She looked at Mike and sighed. "Today is your birthday, so if you want to go there, we can go now. I'm sorry that I can't take you to the amusement park today. I'll take you there next time."

"Okay. Mommy, how did your interview go?" Mike asked, jumping out of his seat.

'Of course I got the job. And Mike will start going to school tomorrow. He's only five, so he has to go to kindergarten for a year. When he's six, he can then go to primary school.'

"Of course I..."

Before Marina could finish her words, Mike continued, "You definitely didn't get the job."

"Hey, why do you think so little of your mother?"

Marina spoke in a low voice since they were in a public place. Besides, she was used to bickering with her son like this. After saying this, Marina took Mike by the hand, and they left the cafe together.

"Mommy, are you saying that you nailed the interview?" Mike asked curiously.

"Of course. Did you really think I was that bad?"

"Silly Mommy! I won't quarrel with you today. Just remember to take me to the amusement park."

"Okay, I promise. And don't forget to go to school tomorrow, okay?"

"I know, Mommy."

After negotiating the contract, Michael looked again at the seat where Mike had sat and found that he was no longer there. 'He probably went home. What a funny kid! We just ran into each other, but why does he look so familiar to me?'

Marina was happy that her son liked the food at KFC. When they left the fast food restaurant, the sun was setting. The image of the mother and son walking down the street with the setting sun shining on them was very sweet. But there was one person missing from the picture.

When Marina and Mike got home in the evening, Marina's parents were watching TV while cuddled on the sofa. As soon as Mike entered the house, he ran to them and said in a sweet voice, "Grandpa, Grandma, we're back."

Mike loved his grandparents and was happy to stay with them.

Seeing his grandson, Phillip's face lit up. "Mike, where did you go today?"

"Mommy had an interview. Today is my birthday, so we ate at KFC!"

When Phillip found out that it was Mike's birthday, he glanced at Marina. "Why didn't you tell me it was his birthday? I didn't get him anything."

After saying that, he quickly ran into his bedroom. Not long after, he came out with a red envelope and handed it to Mike with a smile. "Mike, this is your birthday gift. From now on, all the money in this envelope is yours."

Marina took the red envelope and looked inside. Her jaw dropped in surprise when she found a check for five million dollars. She looked at her father with wide eyes and asked, "Dad, are you really going to give Mike that much money?"

"Yes, and I believe he will definitely double the money. That is the start-up capital for him."

Marina thought that her father was crazy for giving so much money to a kid, but in the end, she still accepted the money.

She wanted to keep it on Mike's behalf, but Mike grabbed the check and held it tightly in his hand. "Mommy, don't touch it. Grandpa gave it to me! I'll keep it by myself."
