Chapter 6 Are You Sure You're Not Nervous

The unexpectedness of the man's voice took Sarah by surprise as she looked up and glared at him. Her cold expression was a hint that she did not want to be disturbed.

Unfortunately, Spencer Chadwick wasn't buying it. In fact, Spencer liked to make fun of Sarah, even though the latter was two years older than him. Perhaps, no one else who worked in the company dared to get too close to Sarah, but Spencer was different.

To cut a long story short, he was the son of the company's boss. He started out as a general manager and slowly took over the company from his father. He was known for messing around with women, but he never did it with the intention of developing a relationship with any of them, so he wasn't exactly a playboy either.

Spencer noticed the name "James Holland" flashing on the screen of Sarah's phone and his smile slowly transformed into a frown. Needless to say, it wasn't hard for him to guess that the caller was a man. Spencer shook the phone in front of Sarah and asked, "Miss Swain, who is this 'James Holland'? Are you going on a blind date again? Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you supposed to be working overtime tonight?" Spencer squinted his eyes at Sarah, trying to catch a change in her expression.

Unfortunately, there was none. Sarah remained undaunted, as Spencer's complacent tone failed to incite an outrage from her part. Spencer knew that Sarah had been going on blind dates for the past few years, so this wasn't the first time she was being taunted by him like this.

However, Spencer's unannounced appearance in her office disrupted Sarah's concentration and she glared at him angrily. "Mr. Chadwick, don't you have anything better to do with your time? You're well aware that I have to work overtime, but here you are, bothering me again."

"I was just here to check up on what you were doing. But, the moment I came in I was greeted with your violence. I must say that I am utterly heartbroken!" Spencer clutched his chest, pretending to be sad.

If it were even remotely possible, Sarah would have much preferred to spit on his face, but instead, she said, "Mr. Chadwick, you deserve an Oscar for your acting performance! You are wasting your talent as an actor by being a general manager here."

Sarah always regarded Spencer as an amiable younger brother. In fact, the first time she met him, Sarah mistook him for an intern and asked him to do all the menial tasks like filing, cleaning and arranging. It wasn't until later that she realized what a conniving man he really was.

"Well, if I become a star, will Miss Swain fall in love with me?" Spencer raised an eyebrow at Sarah, slowly leaning towards her from the other side of the desk.

Sarah hardly ever took anything he said seriously as she had gotten used to his mischievous demeanor over the years. However, his blatant flirting was starting to frighten Sarah. After all, the blinds inside her office were still open. What would the others think if they saw her with Spencer like this? She picked up a pen and tapped Spencer on the head. "Mr. Chadwick, please behave yourself. Flirting with a female subordinate is not something a boss should do."

Spencer burst into laughter when he caught her in a fit of panic. Sarah stared at him in confusion, wondering what was so funny about what she had said that warranted such a response from him. He gave Sarah a gentle pat on the head and said, "Why are you so nervous? Silly girl!"

"Spencer, I'm older than you. Don't forget that! How dare you call me a silly girl? Besides, I'm not, I'm not nervous at all." Sarah felt so embarrassed for stuttering that she wanted to bury her head in the sand.

"I am not, I'm not nervous at all." Spencer taunted Sarah by repeating what she had said, adding a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to his words. When her face darkened in anger, he didn't stop, instead he spoke even more sarcastically. "Are you sure you're not nervous?"
