Chapter 4 You Can't Waste Your Time Now

Danna received a phone call on at dinner time. She walked to the living room and answered it. Sarah watched her mother's eyes crinkle up and her deep laughter ring out from the living room. She exchanged curious glances with her father, Alexis Swain, who was sitting opposite her at the dinner table. "Dad, what's going on with Mom? Why does she sound so happy?"

Alexis tilted his head to cast a sideways glance at Danna with the same confusion. "All right then! We should just let the two of them know each other more," said Danna, before she hung up.

Sarah's face changed almost as soon as she heard that. It was quite obvious that her mother was on the phone with Tina. She recalled memories from her childhood when Tina would often bring beautiful dresses for her. But now, the problem was with Sarah, who wasn't interested in James.

As soon as Danna walked over, Sarah started to eat faster, as if she was in some kind of a hurry to finish eating. Much to her surprise, she got hit over the head with a spoon. Sarah uttered a mournful howl, dropping her spoon on the table, and then covered her head with her arms. "Mom, why are you hitting me?"

"Why? Didn't you tell me that James didn't like you?" Danna looked at Sarah with squinted eyes. She was so sad to hear that James wasn't interested in her beautiful daughter. However, as it turned out, it was her very own daughter who was making things up.

"Fine! I lied! I'm the one who isn't interested in him. Are you happy now?" The fact that James liked her was of no concern to her. However, since she had to think about spending the rest of her life with another man, at the very least, she had to find a man she could look at without feeling repulsed.

"You're such a spoiled brat! James is a very nice person! What's not to like? I just don't understand what you want! Sarah, you can't waste your time like this. You're not going to be young forever. At some point, you have to stop being so picky, because after a few years, no one will want to be with you!" Danna's voice rose in temper. After all, how could she not worry about her daughter? What would Sarah do in the future if she didn't have a good man by her side when she was no longer as young as she was now?

Sarah had heard her mother say that at least a hundred times by now.

In fact, she had heard those same words so many times that her ears had gotten used to them already. She glanced at her mother and said, "Mom, maybe you should try some other methods to persuade me? I'm getting tired of hearing you say that all the time."

Danna wasn't too pleased with Sarah's snide attitude, but just as she was about to lose her temper, Alexis came over and held her hand. "Honey, calm down." Alexis gave his daughter a stern look and said, "Sarah, try not to irritate your mother so much."

As the man of the family, his words carried considerable importance. As a result, Danna held back on her temper, while Sarah obediently lowered her head and carried on eating her food.

"Sarah, I'm not trying to force you. I just want you to find a good man to get married to. That's all! James comes from a very well-to-do family, and we've known his parents for a very long time. I guess I just hoped that you two would hit it off on your first date. But, if you really don't see it going anywhere with James, I won't force you. Honey, why not give him a chance?" Danna spoke softly, patting Sarah's hand with affection.

Needless to say, Sarah knew that her mother was just looking out for her best interest. Indeed, James was the perfect husband material and perhaps she was being too picky. After feeling her mother's eyes hovering over her with anticipation, Sarah nodded. "Fine! But, let me get one thing straight-if we don't see eye to eye, then it's not my fault!"

"Deal! All I ask is that you give him a chance." Having heard what she wanted to hear from Sarah, Danna finally smiled and sat down to eat beside her.

Sarah shook her head in amusement and smiled at her mother. It was too soon to determine whether she had made the right decision or not, but perhaps giving it a chance wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.
