Chapter 8 Meeting Again

Due to her constantly getting motion sickness, her mother decided to rent a house that wasn't that far from the supermarket. Wendy helped her mother carry the groceries as they walked home.

The mother and daughter pair walked along the street, chatting and laughing. All of a sudden, her eyes caught a glimpse of a figure on the bus, and her eyes widened in disbelief.

Her body reacted much faster than her brain did. By the time she came to her senses, she found that she had already jumped into the bus.

It startled the driver who was about to close the door. "Fuck! You scared me! If you want to get on the bus, you can just ask me to keep the door open for you. If I closed it while you were getting in, you would have ended up bumping into the door. It doesn't really matter if the door gets broken, but if your head gets injured, you might die!"

The driver kept rambling on. However, Wendy wasn't even paying attention to anything he said. Caught in a daze, she couldn't take her eyes off of the man sitting inside the bus.

Were her eyes playing tricks on her again? No, there was no way she was only imagining this!

Noticing Wendy's intent gaze on him, Harold took his eyes off of the scenery outside the window and looked back at her.

She looked right into those familiar eyes, saw the cold-hearted yet still caring man, the man who died in the explosion from the car crash trying to save her.

Harold stared back at Wendy in silence, wearing a deep frown.

Feeling so confused, Sara followed Wendy into the bus and asked, "Wendy, why did you suddenly hop into the bus? Our home isn't far from here. We can just walk home. Besides, it's not like we're carrying a lot of stuff. Wendy? Wendy, you're crying! What's wrong? Do you feel uncomfortable?"

Hearing her mother, Wendy turned around and was already in tears. Trying to get a hold of herself, she wiped the tears on her face at once. Then, she lowered her head and said, "Mom, I'm fine."

"Hey, are you going to take the bus or not?" the driver shouted, sounding quite irritated.

Feeling sorry for her daughter, Sara took the items Wendy was carrying and said, "Let's just walk home."

"Mom, let's just take the bus home." Wendy's eyes were bloodshot, and she kept stealing glances at Harold from time to time.

Sara sensed her daughter's unusual behavior. Normally, her face would turn pale and her body would keep shivering and sweating as soon as she sat in a car.

Other than her crying inexplicably just now, her face seemed rather normal. Feeling a bit hesitant, Sara put the money into the fare box.

An old man who was sitting next to Harold noticed the weird way Wendy was acting. Then, he turned his head and gave Harold a wink. All Harold could do was frown, shaking his head slightly.

The old man turned his gaze toward Sara, and asked kindly, "Is she your child? Why is she crying?"

Gently touching Wendy's head, Sara went ahead and explained, "When my daughter was a kid, she suffered a head injury. Ever since then, she would feel dizzy and sick the second she gets on a vehicle. We had taken her to the hospital to get some help and she even tried taking motion sickness medicine, but it had no effect at all. I asked her if she felt uncomfortable, but she wouldn't tell me anything." After saying that, Sara let out a soft sigh.

Taking a look at Wendy, the old man said, "If you're feeling uncomfortable, you should tell your mom right away. Don't keep it to yourself."

The only thing Wendy was thinking about was why Harold had appeared here. Did he also retain his memories from his previous life? If he didn't remember her, what was she supposed to do?!

The old man's voice managed to pull her back into reality. Wendy simply shook her head and said, "I'm okay. I don't feel dizzy today."

"Little girl, which grade are you going to be in this school year?"

"I will start my first year in senior high school soon," Wendy answered politely. The old man was sitting next to Harold, so she could take a good look at him this time.

If it weren't for her right mind telling her to remain calm, she would've already thrown herself into Harold's arms by now, crying her heart out.

"He's six years older than you and will start his third year in the university," the old man replied, patting Harold on the back and chuckling a bit.

"Is he your grandson?" Wendy asked curiously. After all, she had never met Harold's family in her previous life.

"No, his grandfather is a good friend of mine. But, I watched him grow up, so I guess I could be considered as his grandfather. We heard that the scenery here is beautiful, so he tagged along on this trip with me." The old man burst out laughing after saying these words. Although his hair and eyebrows had turned grey, his face was still ruddy and his eyes were so bright. Simply put, he looked so full of energy.

Wendy and the old man seemed to be having a good chat, but Harold looked like he couldn't care less about it. He kept looking outside the window without saying a word. No one knew what was on his mind.

"Slam!" The driver was going so fast that when the bus took a sharp turn, the stuff in their bags fell all over the ground.

Wendy and her mother quickly hunkered to pick them up, with some things even rolling down at Harold's feet. Taking a deep look at the side profile of Wendy's face, Harold thought for a few seconds and bent down to help them pick up their stuff.

The bus was too fast and bumpy, making it more difficult for them to keep their balance, let alone pick everything up.

Noticing that Sara had been trying to pick up the brush under her chair for a while now but couldn't reach it, the old man immediately bent down and lent her a hand.

Wendy stood up and was just about to grab the snacks that were all over the ground. But, before she could grab onto the handrail, the driver took a sudden turn. The strong inertia caused her to lose her balance and fall to the side.

Much to her surprise, she felt the familiar warmth as she fell into Harold's arms.

She raised her head and looked straight into his eyes. But, the usual tenderness wasn't there, and his gaze just seemed so cold and distant.

"I'm sorry!" Wendy stood up right away, feeling so depressed. It seemed that Harold wasn't in the same boat as she was. He didn't remember anything about their previous life.

Seeing that Sane Wu, the old man, was all right, Harold furrowed his eyebrows and said to the driver in a cold voice, "Can't you drive a little slower?"

"Oh, sorry, sorry." The driver looked at them from the rearview mirror and apologized at once.

After the driver slowed down, the bus wasn't bumpy anymore. With that, Harold and Sane continued to help them pick up their stuff.

At that moment, in a hotel room, looking at the bus that was approaching, a man said in a low voice to the intercom, "Sir, I didn't see the target in the bus!"

"How can that be?! The informant told me that he was riding on this bus!" the man exclaimed in a voice filled with hostility over the intercom.

"I still haven't spotted the target. The bus is about to pass. Please give your order!"

"Who's that in your view?"

"Only the driver!"

"Just one driver?"

"Yes! Wait, I think I saw him! There are three other people in the bus. They seem to be squatting on the floor of the bus."

"Did they find about us? It can't be."

"The bus is about to pass. Please give the instruction!"

"Kill all of them!" the man yelled out over the intercom, without so much as a hint of remorse.

"Yes, sir!" Upon receiving the order, the man in the room quickly got ready to shoot. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't get a good aim at them from this angle.

The man sneered in frustration and moved the muzzle of the gun.

"Bang!" With a gunshot, a stream of blood sprayed from the driver's head and his body immediately fell to the floor.

Taken completely off guard, Sara wrapped her arms around Wendy in a hurry as she screamed in fear and panic.

"Grandpa Sane!" Without hesitation, Harold quickly pulled Sane to the ground and hid him from plain sight in the corner. It was a good thing that they had been squatting down because the chairs had covered their figures.
