Chapter 7 Spy On Us

After they made sure all their things were packed up, Wendy and Sara opened the door and saw a car parked outside, with Derek standing next to it.

The look on Sara's face changed, and she asked, "Why are you here?"

"Why didn't you tell me that you were moving today? Let me drive you there." Dropping the cigarette in his hand, Derek walked over toward them to pick up their luggage and put in the trunk of his car.

Sara opened her mouth ever so slightly, looking as though she wanted to say something. But, in the end, she helplessly sighed and didn't say a word.

Wendy stared at Derek. It had been so long since she last saw him that she had almost forgotten about him.

Why did he suddenly show up today? Had he been secretly keeping in touch with her mother all this time?

With her eyebrows deeply knit, Wendy asked, "How do you know that we are moving? Were you spying on us?"

Hearing the word "spy", Sara's face suddenly became devoid of color. Then, she shook her head and said, "Wendy, don't say that. Your Uncle Derek is just helping us out of kindness."

After hesitating for a bit, Derek gave a peculiar smile and said, "I was taking care of something in the town today and overheard someone saying that you're moving today. That's why I drove here right away. We're going to be late. Let's go."

Clearly trying to avoid Wendy's gaze, Derek sat on the driver's seat and asked, "Has Wendy still been getting carsick these past couple of years?"

"She is still getting car sick. We've already tried giving her medicine for motion sickness, but it's no use," Sara sighed and said.

"Wendy, it seems that you did a great job on your studies! You got the first place in the senior high school entrance exam and got directly admitted to the No.1 High School in the city!" Sensing Wendy's hostility, Derek tried to change the subject to establish rapport with her.

However, the moment she stepped into the car, Wendy immediately felt so uncomfortable. Because of that, she didn't hear a word he said at all.

Closing her eyes, she leaned back against the seat and tried her best not to think about the past. But, try as she might, the images kept flashing in her mind uncontrollably.

Seeing the pained expression on her daughter's face, Sara felt so sorry for her.

Noticing this, Derek drove faster. And after a long drive, they finally reached their destination.

The house that Sara rented was already fully furnished. All it needed was just a little bit of cleaning.

Bess had already registered at the school, and she was going to be boarding there. The new semester had yet to begin, so she was free to do whatever she wanted for the time being.

No sooner had her parents left than Bess excitedly came over to invite Wendy to the temple fair. Holding cotton candies in their hands, they merrily walked to the riverside.

"Wendy, what do you say we buy a sugar figurine to eat?" Bess suggested, excitedly pointing at a stall not far away.

Looking toward the direction Bess pointed, Wendy realized that she was referring to the "sugar-coated figurines". Anyone could spin a roulette by giving the stall keeper 50 cents. The roulette would stop at a random animal, and the stall keeper would use sugar to make a figurine of that animal. Sugar, usually red or white, and maltose would be mixed together in a furnace and boiled in a bluish fire. Once the temperature was right, it could be used to make a figurine.

"Aren't we eating cotton candy? Now you want to eat sugar figurines as well? Aren't you afraid of having too much sweets?" Wendy asked with a playful smile.

"I like sweet food best. How can I possibly get afraid of it?" Upon saying that, Bess grabbed Wendy's hand and led her to the stall. "Wendy, I'm feeling lucky today. Can you guess if I can make the roulette stop at the dragon?! Don't stop. Dragon! Dragon! I want the dragon!"

"Come on!" Taking a bite of her cotton candy, Wendy looked away.

All of a sudden, she was out of breath, and she stood rooted to the spot. Her nose twitched and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Wendy stared blankly at a man standing not too far away from where they were. The morning sun was shining brightly on him. His chest and collarbones were exposed under his clothes. And he was rather good looking.

With that stern temperament and cold gaze, Wendy was certain that she wasn't mistaken! It was definitely him, Harold He!

Originally, Wendy assumed that since she had chosen not to go abroad, it would be almost impossible for her to meet Harold again! Who would have known?! She might not have been able to go abroad, but God sent Harold to her instead!

At the thought of the familiar voice, familiar arms, the cars and the ear-splitting explosion, Wendy couldn't hold back her tears.

"Wow! Ah, ah, ah! Wendy, look! I'm so lucky! I actually got the dragon!" Bess said, jumping about in excitement.

"Wow, little girl, you're amazing! I'll make a dragon figurine for you now." Wearing a wide grin, the stall keeper started making a dragon figurine.

"Wendy, what are you looking at? Take a look at this dragon." Since she didn't get any response from Wendy at all, Bess thought she was stuck in a daze, so she wanted to drag her to show the dragon the stall keeper had made for her.

Bess's action helped bring Wendy back to her senses. But, when she saw that the man not far away from her was about to leave, she shook Bess's hand off and ran after him.

"Wendy, where are you going? Hey, Wendy!" As she looked at Wendy's back, Bess felt so confused. "Please wait for me. I'm just going to check on my friend real quick. I'll be back soon."

"Okay. Don't worry. I'll wait for you," The stall keeper assured her.

Today, the temple fair was full of people, and a lot of pedestrians were blocking Harold. Because of this, Wendy anxiously quickened her pace.

She rushed into the crowd but couldn't see Harold anywhere. Then, she began to anxiously look around. "Harold, where are you? Harold?"

The man who was walking ahead not too far from her stopped and looked back, not noticing anything unusual. The man walking beside him stopped as well and asked in confusion, "Harold, what's the matter?"

After looking around, Harold simply shook his head and went on his way. The man next to him quickly went after him and helplessly said, "Can you please just say something?! You've barely said anything the whole day. I'm so bored!"

"You're just talking too much," Harold lightly replied.

"Hey, buddy! If I wasn't your childhood friend, and didn't know what kind of person you are, the two of us would already be fighting right now!" Charles Wu said, rolling his eyes in frustration.

Wendy frantically searched for Harold, but she couldn't find him anywhere. It seemed as though the man she had seen just now was nothing but an illusion.

Wendy broke down and buried her face in her lap, sobbing in sadness.

"Wendy? Is something wrong? Why are you crying?" Bess quickly ran to her, squatted beside her and worriedly asked.

Wendy wanted to pour out all of the pent up emotions and tears she had been holding back from the moment she was reborn. At that moment, she really wanted to hold him in her arms, the man who had promised to protect her for the rest of her life.

Holding the sugar figurine in her hand, Bess looked at the pale-faced Wendy. It suddenly occurred to her that it would be best not to ask Wendy why she suddenly ran away and why she cried.

Bess handed over the sugar figurine to Wendy and said, "This is for you. The sugar figurine is sweet, and you will feel sweet if you eat it."

"Thank you, Bess." Trying her best to put on a smile, Wendy took the sugar figurine and took a bite. It was indeed sweet, but she was...
