Chapter 1

The gates of the Ashworth estate were imposing. Gold-tipped iron, like a fortress.

I, Ava Hayes, stood before them, a struggling artist from a cramped New York studio, now supposedly the biological daughter of the late tech billionaire, Michael Hayes.

My mother, Victoria, had remarried into this family, the Ashworths. They had then adopted Chloe.

Victoria, my mother, barely looked at me. Her eyes were all for Chloe.

Chloe Ashworth, my new adoptive sister, all polished charm and expensive perfume, sized me up.

Her smile didn't reach her eyes.

"Welcome to the family, Ava," Chloe said, her voice smooth as silk. "We need to set some ground rules, though. A little game."

My stomach tightened. This wasn't a welcome; it was a challenge.

"A game?" I asked.

"A pact," Chloe corrected, her eyes gleaming. "Nine strikes. If I can make you lose nine things you value – experiences, possessions, people – you walk away. No inheritance, no Ashworth name. You disappear."

This was how my new life began: with a threat disguised as a game.

The pact had been a slow torture. Eight strikes down. My art supplies, ruined. A cherished photo of my biological father, 'lost'. Friendships, sabotaged.

Now, the ninth strike. The final one.

Chloe's voice dripped with contempt, "For the ninth strike, Ava darling, it' s your little musician. Ethan Vance."

She dangled a check in front of me. "One million dollars. For him to leave you, publicly."

Ethan. My Ethan. Charismatic, a little rough around the edges, but he saw me. He loved me.

Losing him would break me. Chloe knew it.

The charity gala buzzed with New York's elite.

Chloe, stunning in red, made her move. She cornered Ethan near the orchestra.

I watched, heart pounding, from across the room.

"Ethan," Chloe purred, loud enough for those nearby to hear. "A million dollars. Just walk away from Ava. Start a new life. A better one."

Ethan looked at the check, then at Chloe.

He smiled, a slow, confident smile. "Chloe, darling," he said, his voice carrying. "Ava is worth more than any money you could offer."

He walked over to me, took my hand, and kissed it. "I choose Ava."

A wave of relief washed over me. He loved me. He truly did.

The crowd murmured, some with admiration, some with amusement at Chloe's expense.

Chloe' s face turned a shade of purple I' d never seen. Humiliated. Furious.

She stormed off.

Later that night, her voice echoed through the Ashworth mansion. "Fine! I'll show them! I' ll marry Captain Riley!"

Captain Marcus "Mac" Riley. A war hero, son of Senator Eleanor Riley. Currently in a coma.

The marriage was a desperate ploy by Chloe, a grab for status, tied to a medical research foundation Mac championed.

It was impulsive, reckless. And it set something new in motion, something I couldn't yet see.

I needed air. I stepped onto the balcony, Ethan's words still warming me.

Then I heard voices from the library below. Ethan' s voice.

"...Chloe took the bait perfectly. The Riley marriage is a delightful complication. Makes her even more desperate."

My blood ran cold.

Another voice, smooth, deferential. "Mr. Vance, your instructions for Vance Industries' next move against Ashworth assets?"

Mr. Vance? Vance Industries?

Ethan wasn't a down-on-his-luck musician. He was Ethan Vance, CEO of a rival tech giant.

I crept closer, hidden by the shadows, my phone accidentally recording.

Ethan laughed, a cold, chilling sound. "Chloe thinks I want her. She' s a means to an end. Undermine the Ashworths, avenge what Michael Hayes did to me."

His voice turned venomous. "As for Ava... she was useful. Provoked Chloe nicely."

"And the Riley marriage, sir?"

"My plan was for Ava to substitute for Chloe in that ridiculous marriage. Keep Chloe for myself, of course. I'd 'rescue' Ava later. Control her, and through her, anything Michael Hayes left behind. Especially AURORA."

My phone clattered from my numb fingers onto the stone floor.

He knew about AURORA. My father's AI.

The screen of my phone lit up, a message from AURORA flashing: Ethan Vance. Threat Level: Critical. Motive: Revenge, Control. Objective: You.

My world shattered. Ethan, my Ethan, was a monster.

He had used me. Every touch, every word, a lie.

He wanted Chloe for her status, to destroy the Ashworths. And me? I was a pawn, a tool.

To be forced into a marriage with a comatose man, then "rescued" and controlled.

The beautiful bracelet Ethan had given me, the one he said was a family heirloom, felt like a shackle.

I ripped it off, the clasp breaking. It fell to the floor beside my phone.

Despair choked me.

Then, a spark of defiance. He wouldn't win. Chloe wouldn't win.

I would take Chloe' s place. I would marry Mac Riley. But on my own terms.

"You're really going through with this?" Kevin Ashworth, my half-brother, asked. He looked pale.

He' d been Chloe' s ally, mostly. Now, he seemed... troubled.

"Yes," I said, my voice flat. "Chloe gets what she wants. She avoids the Riley marriage."

He sighed, a small sound of relief. "Good. It' s for the best. Chloe was terrified."

He didn't see the bitterness in my eyes, the cold fury in my heart.

The car for the Riley estate was supposedly arriving for Chloe in an hour.

"But I have conditions, Kevin," I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

He looked at me, a flicker of unease in his eyes. "Conditions?"

"Yes. My full inheritance from Michael Hayes. Everything. The patents, the shares, the properties. Victoria and Robert Ashworth will sign it over. Now."

My voice was quiet, but it held a new, hard edge.

Kevin stared. "Ava, that's... that's a fortune. You can't be serious."

"And one more thing," I added, my gaze unwavering. "My substitution for Chloe. It stays a secret. Especially from Ethan Vance."

Kevin paled. "Ava, what are you talking about? Your inheritance? That' s... that' s an outrageous demand!"

He looked genuinely shocked. "The shares alone are worth billions! Why would you suddenly demand all that?"

"Why?" I almost laughed. The sound was harsh, brittle. "Because it' s mine, Kevin. Because this family, my mother included, let Chloe systematically strip away everything I had, piece by piece."

My voice rose, trembling slightly. "My art, my father's memory, my friends. You all stood by and watched. Cheered her on, even."

"This isn't greed. This is reclamation."

"But... those assets," Kevin stammered, "Chloe said Michael left them in a trust, difficult to access without... without specific triggers."

"My father, Michael Hayes, left them to me. His biological daughter," I stated, my voice cold. AURORA had shown me the truth of the will. "The 'triggers' are my coming of age and my formal acknowledgement by the family. Which, conveniently, happened when you all 'found' me."

"You knew about this? You let Chloe dangle them like a prize?"

Kevin winced. He couldn't meet my eyes. "Chloe... she convinced Mother and Father it was better to control the release... for your own good."

"My own good," I repeated, the words like ash in my mouth. "Fine. Sign the papers. All of them. Now."

He looked defeated. "Alright, Ava. I' ll get them. But why keep it from Ethan? Don' t you... love him?"

"Love him?" The words were devoid of any warmth. "Ethan Vance means less than nothing to me now."

My voice was so cold, so detached, it even surprised me.

Kevin stared, a new understanding dawning in his eyes. He finally saw a glimpse of the steel beneath the naive artist.

He nodded slowly. "I'll get the papers."

He left, and the strong facade I' d maintained crumbled.

I sank onto the chaise lounge, tears finally escaping, hot and furious.

My phone buzzed. Ethan.

His voice, when I answered, was smooth, seductive. "Ava, my love. Thinking of you. Are you packed for our little trip after Chloe' s disastrous wedding?"

A trip. He meant to dispose of me after I served my purpose.

"Just finishing up, Ethan," I managed, my voice tight.

"Good girl," he purred. "I' m just... entertaining Chloe a little. She' s quite distraught. Needs a strong hand."

I could hear Chloe' s muffled sobs in the background, then a sharp cry of pain.

My screen lit up. AURORA.

AURORA: Audio-Visual Feed from Ethan Vance's location active.

On my phone screen, I saw Ethan. He was on his penthouse balcony. Chloe was there, tear-streaked, terrified.

He held his phone to his ear, speaking to me, while with his other hand, he deliberately knocked a glass of champagne from Chloe' s trembling fingers. It shattered on the marble.

"She' s clumsy when she' s upset," Ethan said into the phone, his eyes, on the video feed, glinting with malice as he watched Chloe flinch.

"Ethan' s goal is clear," AURORA' s text appeared on the screen below the video. He intends to break Chloe Ashworth completely, force her into submission. He believes you are unaware.

I watched, horrified, as Ethan grabbed Chloe' s chin, forcing her to look at him.

"You see, Chloe," he was saying to her, not to me, his voice a low snarl, "you thought you could play me. But I own you. You will beg for me."

He was talking to Chloe, but his words were a fresh knife in my own heart. He was a monster.

Tears streamed down my face, no longer of just sorrow, but of cold, hard rage.

He wanted to use me, to break Chloe, to control everything.

Fine. Let him think he was winning.

Let him think I was still his naive little artist.

He would learn. They all would.
