LUCAS POV.
Everything was going as planned for me. I have already made a lot of arrangements for my engagement party in a few days, and I've gotten a nice engagement ring for Sophia. It was made of pure diamond and super expensive. I know for sure that Sophia is going to love it.
After getting the ring, I went to her house excited to show it to her, but as I walked in, I was greeted with the sight of my love in tears.
I quickly rushed to her side on the couch, "Sophia honey, is something wrong?"
I searched her face for traces of the answer. I swear I'm going to kill anyone who messes with my girl.
"Lucas," she sniffed "I don't think we should get married."
My heart stopped and that feeling of irritation instantly surfaced. "I thought we were over this talk Sophia. What's wrong again?"
"Your mom is against it. She doesn't want us to be together Lucas." She brushed the tears from her eyes and continued, "she came to the office today and offered me money to stay away from you. She also called me a golddigger."
Anger filled my soul at that. Why would mom do such a thing?
I gently pulled my sobbing fiancee to my chest, "it's okay Sophia, don't cry anymore. I'll talk to mom about this."
"No Lucas, don't do that!" She jumped in protest, "if you talk to her, she will know I said something to you and that would only make her hate me more."
"I will talk to her Sophia. She has no right to insult you. She may be my mom, but there is a limit to the things she should do concerning me. I'm not a kid anymore!"
Sophia held unto my shirt like a frightened kitten, "I'm scared Lucas. I don't want her to keep you away from me."
I shook my head, pulling her close. "She won't. I won't let that happen. Our wedding is going to push through no matter what she thinks." I pulled back and pulled out the ring from my pocket, "besides, I got you this."
I opened the small red velvet box and chuckled as Sophia's eyes widen. "Oh wow Lucas, just how much does this cost?!"
"The cost doesn't matter," I took the ring out and held her right hand in mine, "what matters is that, Lucas Sullivan's Queen deserves far more expensive gifts than this." I slipped the ring into her index finger and examine it in satisfaction "it looks very good on you."
"T_thank you Lucas, but won't your mom be mad? She is already mad about this house you got me, and I don't want her to add another reason to hate me."
I brushed off her worries, "don't worry about my mom love, I'll talk to her. For now we have to celebrate this. I'm sure there is still wine in the house."
She nodded with a smile and I was glad that she is no longer sad, "I'll go get it."
She stood up and hurried to the cabinet where we stored wine in the house. At first Sophia was against it because she doesn't drink anything alcohol, but I insisted and eventually convinced her that it was more for me than for her, as I practically live here now.
Sophia is sweet, innocent and cute. She's kind, caring and a lovable person. I've never met any girl that captivates me the way she does, and I'll be damned if I don't have her as my wife.
Mom better understand that!
***
Mom was laughing over tea with Emma when I stomped into the house. They both glance up, startled at my sudden precense and the aggressive way in which I came in.
"Mom, why did you try to give money to my fiancee so she would abandon me?" I went straight to it, not caring about the other person present.
Mom rolled her eyes in irritation, "is that why you stomped in here like a mad dog?"
"Mom you had no right to insult Sophia like that. I love her and nothing is going to change my mind about marrying her. Not even you!"
Mom's eyes flashed in anger. "That woman is nothing but a golddigger Lucas. Not only has she completely bewitched you, she is also turning you against your family."
"She's not at fault for that mom, you are! Why can't you just respect my decision to get married to her? I am a grown man who can make my own decisions for God's sake!"
"Then stop acting like a kid and making stupid decisions. You don't know much about this orphan woman. For all we know, her parents might be criminals. But you didn't think about that, you just want to jump into marriage with her."
My fist clenched in anger. It's seems mom went behind my back to carry out a background check on Sophia.
"I don't care about her background. We don't know her parents and she doesn't either. Whoever they turn out to be is not Sophia's fault, and that is not going to stop me from making her my wife."
"I will never approve of that marriage Lucas! Emma here is a better partner for you!"
"Aunty please, don't drag me into this." Emma said gently, "Lucas has a right to choose the woman he wants to be with."
I smiled gratefully at her, "hear that mom? Even Emma understands better than you do."
"That's because Emma is a kind hearted person, and that just proves she is the kind of person you need in your life."
I rolled my eyes and gave up. "I won't try to convince you anymore mom. Stop trying to bribe my fiancee into leaving me. With or without your permission, Sophia will become my wife."
I turn to go, but her words stopped me, "if you bring that woman here as your wife, I am going to make life hell for her, and she will regret ever getting married to you."
Without replying or even a backward glance, I walked away from them.
That threat won't stop me. Sophia will become my wife, and I know once she lives here with us and mom sees her true personality, she is going to realize that Sophia isn't who she thinks she is.
