Chapter 3

"Apologies for the delay in your orientation, Sarah."

Coordinator 7's voice materialized in my ear, calm and synthesized as always.

I was already dressed, staring out the window of my new, tiny apartment.

"The reset sequence for Maya encountered minor... inefficiencies. The drowning simulation was prolonged."

Prolonged. That was one word for it.

"It was, however, ultimately efficient in terms of data retrieval regarding stress markers."

Efficient. Of course.

I didn't bother responding. What was the point?

"We are confident that this sixth cycle will achieve the primary objective with Mr. Cole," the AI continued, its optimism unwavering, almost irritating.

"Actually, Coordinator," I said, my voice flat. "About that."

"Processing... Ah, yes. The alternative."

A slight pause, almost like the AI was... surprised?

"There appears to be an unprecedented addendum to your current mission parameters, Sarah."

I could almost hear the digital equivalent of a frown.

"An alternative Integration Target has indeed been approved: Liam Walker."

Intrigue. A flicker of it.

Liam.

I barely knew him, not really. Just as Ethan's shadow.

But he wasn't Ethan. That was enough.
