Davina's POV
With my heart ramming against my chest, I couldn't help but stare at the duo who were glaring murderously at me.
Pressing my lips tightly together, I made sure I didn't make a sound otherwise I would face a grave punishment for it.
"What have you done again?" Mother yelled, breaking the silence in the living room. "Wherever you go, you always cause havoc, aren't you tired of being hated?" She added with a huff. Placing her hands on her waist, Lyra rose and with a loud and intimidating tone, she said,
"If I were you, I would have killed myself a long time ago. It's not as if being deprived of a befitting burial would make a difference, you are nothing but a slave, your body would be fed to the rogues." Each word she said made my heart break until it was completely broken and I couldn't hold back my tears anymore.
While they laughed and made a mockery of me, I just stood there, whimpering like a rodent that had been caught in a hunter's trap.
Unable to bear it anymore, I dashed towards the kitchen and through the door, I proceeded to my shabby room. Slamming the door shut, I slid through it to the ground and as usual wrapped my hands around my legs. For the next free minutes, I sat there, sobbing uncontrollably as I replayed every single word they had said to me.
Exhausted, I fell asleep and by the time I woke up, it was dusk.
Fortunately for me, both of them left for the palace to join the royal family for dinner so I had the house to myself.
With my stomach rumbling with hunger, I made my way to the kitchen to find some food but there was none. The cabinet was securely locked and I had no right to pull it open. "If I don't do anything, I will end up dying of starvation and even if I attempt to break through the cabinet, I will be given the beating of my life which is equivalent to death itself." Trying to make a decision, I just stood there until my eyes fell on a stack of dirty plates.
Hurrying towards it, I began to scrape the food remains stuck on them. After scraping, what I got wasn't even up to my palm but still, I pushed the stale food into my mouth. Still starving, I tried to open the cabinet to get a slice of bread when Lyra walked in unannounced.
Swallowing the lump that had risen in my throat, I stepped backwards, staring at her with an uneasy look. "Thief!" She yelled at the top of her voice despite my pleas. When mother didn't come around immediately, she intensified her scream and at once I fell on my knees, propping myself up for the beating I was bound to receive. "I saw her trying to close the cabinet after stealing from us."
Lyra said when mother joined us. Alarmed, I pushed my hand forward, trying to refute what had just said but mother didn't listen to me. Grabbing the cane she always left in the kitchen, she charged towards me and the next second, she descended on me, hitting me with all her might.
From the corner of my eyes, I could see Lyra standing next to the door with her hands folded across her chest with a smug look on her face. "You have no right to touch even a grain of rice, you should know your place." Mother said repeatedly as she continued to hit me. She only stopped the onslaught when she was tired and out of breath. "Wash those plates." She yelled, pointing at the stack of plates I had scraped out stale food from. In a bid not to get hit again, I quickly crawled towards the direction she had pointed to and began to do like she had instructed.
Mid ways through this, Lyra came from behind and before I could know what was happening, my face was inside the warm water. She didn't let go of me until I stopped struggling. "Die already!" She repeated her favorite words to me and then burst into a mocking laughter.
When I finally retired to my room, I was so weak that I couldn't even raise a finger not to talk of the pains that erupted all over my body. Whining, I tried to find the most comfortable position on my bug infested bed but it was to no avail.
The insects were not even helping a bit. A few hours later, I sat upright and then reached for my duffel bag. Pulling out my diary, I quickly reached out for my pen and at once I started to write out the events that had happened that day.
The only thing that made a smile cross my lips was the encounter I had with Alpha Malcom, nothing else. When I was done with this, I picked up my flute and then stuttered out of the house, making sure I didn't make a noise otherwise I would get beaten for disrupting their sleep.
Now in my usual spot in the woods, I placed my flute against my lips and then began to blow it. Thanks to the quiet night, the melodious sound traveled for miles and it warmed my heart. I only stopped playing when I heard the first cock crow. Now feeling light hearted, I decided to take my leave only to lock eyes with Alpha Malcom who was standing just right behind the tree.
Frightened, I stumbled backwards but he was quick to grab my hand.
"I couldn't sleep when I heard the melodious sound and I knew at once it was you."
He said, making me even more frightened. In my bid to speak, I made a whining sound that left me embarrassed and immediately I covered my mouth. "We can talk through our mindlink."
He said but since I didn't know how to go about it, I just stood there staring at him.
