Chapter 2 The Alpha's Mistake

Malcolm's POV

"Mate!" I called, peering at her with widened eyes. The look on her face confirmed it too though she didn't say a word to me.

For the next few minutes, I just stood there, staring into space as I tried to process what was happening. Growing up, my father had made me believe that my mate was Lyra, her sister and because of this, we were so close.

But how wrong was he?

"You're my mate." I said in a question-like tone whereas I was just confirming what the moon goddess had done.

Smiling at her, I took a step forward to close the gap between us but she took a step backwards, her eyes widened in fear.

"Come on, you don't have to be scared." I coyed, trying to calm her raging nerves but that didn't help as she began to dart her eyes around.

Grabbing the hem of her gown, she began to look around and I was certain her mind was already running haywire with different ideas.

"You shouldn't be scared of me, you are my mate and..." Suddenly, I pressed my lips together as I snapped my fingers.

"Oh well!" I said and with a bright smile etched on my lips, I proceeded to say, "You were the girl in the woods right?" She didn't give a response but that didn't deter me from making further enquiries.

Pushing my hands into my pockets, I smacked my lips and then went further to say, "You make good music and I want you to play for me sometime."

The smile that broke across her lips was a confirmation that she was pleased with my words and at the same time, that gladdens my heart.

Earlier, I had walked through the woods on my way back from the deity of the moon goddess to inquire about my father's failing health when the sound of the sweet music attracted me.

Ignoring it was the first thing I had in mind, because of the heavyweight of the information the deity had said to me concerning my father but I just couldn't.

The music soothed me that I practically forgot about my sorrows but my happiness was short-lived when I made a sound, startling her in the process.

Just when I was about to chide her for refusing to say a word to me, I remembered she was the despised omega.

Dumb and woofless!

The combination was scary and I could only imagine the tough time she was having in the pack.

At first, because of her disability, I wanted to question the moon goddess for giving me a disabled Luna but I had no choice but to accept my fate. With Lyra, things were different, I never felt any form of connection with her. Our relationship was forced and never improved but I dared not mention this to my father.

He believed she was my chosen mate and both of us should get along before we finally got mated.

"Hey Davina, we should be friends, don't you think?" Placing my hand on my chest, I went further to say, "Both of us are mates and so we should be best of friends." I said, closing this gap between us. This time around she didn't step back in fright and the gaze in her eyes were no longer frightened, rather neutral.

"I will leave now but mind you, I still have my eyes on you. Whatever the problem is, don't hesitate to let me know, okay." I said, eliciting a nod from her.

Looking around to ascertain no one was spying on us, I grabbed her shoulder and then proceeded to place a swift kiss on her forehead before taking my leave.

It had been a few hours since I left Davina's side but yet, my mind was still unsettled. I kept pacing about with a worried look on my face.

"How am I going to convince my father that Lyra isn't my mate but Davina is?" I muttered, throwing my head backwards in frustration.

Taking a deep breath, I halted, tilting my head to the side. "I will have to tell father my findings otherwise I would be stuck with Lyra forever." I muttered, taking quick strides towards the door.

Pulling it open, I was greeted with two maids who were holding a covered tray which I guessed contained food. "I never asked..." I couldn't finish speaking before Lyra appeared and with a bright smile on her face she pulled me into a hug, peppering my face with kisses.

"I was so worried when I was told you didn't have breakfast and had been out all day." She muttered.

Shifting her gaze to the maids, she didn't have to say a word to them before they got the message and at once both of them scurried into my chamber.

When they left, Lyra pulled me into the room and then helped me sit at the edge of the bed.

"You don't look happy, is anything the matter?" She asked, peering into my eyes.

Uncomfortable, I tried to look aside but her grip was so strong that if I dared move my face, I might end up breaking a bone.

"Tell me, what is bothering you." She pressed on. "We are mates and soon we are going to be mated, hiding things from me means you don't trust me as your mate and it hurts."

"I'm not hiding anything from your Lyra." I refuted her claim at once else it would escalate into something else.

"Then why are you ignoring me? I have been trying to get words from you but you wouldn't say a thing. Even the expression on your face shows spite and..."

"Stop making up stories, Lyra." I ratted out, glaring at her with my hands folded by my side.

Pulling myself to my feet, I snarled, "I found my..."

Before spewing the word mate, I called myself to caution as I dug my hand into my hair, regretting my quick reaction to her triggering words.

"Mate?"

She asked, locking gaze with me.
