Chapter 4 Pregnant

Raina glared at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test strip willing for them to disappear. "This cannot be happening," she mumbled.

"What does it say?" Emily, Raina's elder sister, asked impatiently, looking at Raina with concerned eyes.

"It's positive," Raina replied, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Emily sucked in her breath. "Okay. Okay. Don't panic, it might be a false alarm, it happens all the time." She said very fast, grabbing another pregnancy test box.

"Here try this," Emily thrusted the box into Raina's hand. "Pee on it," Emily said, running her fingers through her hair.

Raina peeped on the strip, and closed her eyes for a minute. She took the strip with shaky hands praying this time it will be different.

"So?" Emily asked pacing around the bathroom floor.

"It's the same," Raina said disappointed, as she fell to the ground. "I'm finished." She added sobbing.

"You guys have not been using protection?" Emily asked with curiosity written all over her face.

"It's not Luke's," Raina whispered, covering her face with her hands.

"What?" Emily asked."It's not Luke's!" Raina repeated, this time yelling.

"What do you mean it's not Luke's? You are already with someone else and you didn't tell me?" Emily paused and stared at Raina.

"Wait, have you been cheating? Raina!" Emily yelled.

"Calm down, I'm the pregnant one remember?" Raina replied as she walked out of the bathroom.

"Okay, whose child?" Emily inquired following Raina closely.

"Remember that night after I caught Luke with Ella?" Raina started.

"Yeah, I took you to the bar that night," Emily replied. "And left me there to go see your man," Raina shot out.

"Common, I told you I was sorry, it was an emergency." Emily said softly, while Raina rolled her eyes.

"Well, I kinda slept with someone," Raina said, her voice getting quieter.

"You had a one night stand?" Emily gasped, her eyes were so wide.

Raina groaned loudly. "I just wanted to have fun, I was so drunk and I made a mistake." She said, swinging her arms in the air.

"You didn't use protection or get a pill after?" Emily asked.

"I was so drunk, I forgot to ask for protection and I had a very bad hangover the following day so I forgot to take the pills." Raina replied.

"Okay, I won't judge, what are we going to do?" Emily asked, patting Raina's back.

"Abortion," Raina replied sharply, as she stood up to take a shower.

"Erm... No, that is not happening." Emily said, folding her arms to show she is being serious.

"Emily, I can't have this child, I don't even know the father. I saw mum struggling to raise us alone before she died, I don't want to go through the same thing mum went through." Raina replied, tears were gathering at the corner of her eyes.

"I am in my final year, i have worked all my life to become a chartered accountant, i can't have this baby spoil my plans." She added rubbing her flat stomach.

"Raina," Emily moved closer to Raina placing her hands on her shoulders. "You have me, you are not going through it alone, please," Emily pleaded.

Raina ran her fingers through her hair out of frustration, she broke down in tears.

"I can't do this, granny is definitely going to kill me, my life is over." Raina wept.

"We can keep it a secret for now, and we still have to go to the hospital to confirm," Emily said as she pulled Raina into a hug, rubbing her hair.

*******

"Raina Martins," a nurse called out. Making Raina's heart pounded faster.

"You can go in, the doctor is waiting." The nurse announced.

Emily, who came for support, squeezed Raina's hand in her palm, "you can do this, it's just a little appointment, it won't take long," she whispered into Raina's ear.

They walked slowly toward the nurse, and she directed them to the doctor's office.

Taking a deep breath, Raina took her seat in the doctor's office. She took a glance at Emily who gave her a reassuring smile.

The doctor checked her weight, took a sample of her blood, checked her blood sample and a few other things.

"When was the last time you saw your period miss?" The doctor asked while typing on her computer.

"July 6," Raina replied with a shaky voice.

After 3 minutes that seemed like forever the doctor finally spoke.

"You are definitely pregnant, and will be due on April 14th of next year, please if you can hop on the bed, and we will find your baby heartbeat." The doctor said with a smile.

"I am probably going to come back for that ma'am," Raina said before running out of the doctor's office.

She ran through the corridors straight to the car park ignoring Emily who was screaming her name.

Immediately she got into the car she burst into tears. "It's happening, I'm having a baby, one stupid mistake and now I'm finished," she screamed.

"It's not that deep," Emily said as she entered the car.

"What!" Raina yelled at Emily. "Not deep? I am having a baby without a father, everything I worked for is going to be ruined and you say it is not deep?" Raina said with tears rolling down her cheek.

"We will figure it out Raina, the baby will not stop you from becoming an accountant. You will be fine, I promise." Emily tried to reassure Raina.

"No, I'm aborting it, I will come back and get it out." Raina said as she wiped her tears.

Emily tried to convince her but she refused, telling Emily to just drive.

*******

"Get the door," Emily yelled from the kitchen.

Raina opened the door and an old woman was standing in front of her.

"Granny!" Raina shouted, rushing to give her a hug with a smile.

"My darling, you have added some weight I see," granny said, giving Raina a little pinch on her cheek.

Raina managed to form a smile before collecting the bag of groceries granny brought and allowed her in.

"Why are you here?" Raina asked, offering granny a glass of water.

"I got a call from Emily," granny said, staring at Emily who was busy setting the table.

"Erm..about what?" Raina asked.

"Raina, I know you are pregnant," granny replied softly, glaring at Raina.

"Emily! I thought it was supposed to be a secret?" Raina shouted.

"I am not going to let you have an abortion, what if it goes wrong." Emily shouted back from the kitchen.

"My darling," granny placed her hand around Raina's shoulder. "Why..why do you want to kill your innocent child?"

"I am protecting the child, I won't be able to take care and protect him or her alone, and I can't cope with a baby now, I only have a few months to become what I have always wanted." Raina replied crying.

"Well, you should have thought about that before getting pregnant," granny replied.

"It was a mistake, i didn't plan to," Raina mumbled

"Either ways you are not alone my darling, I am her for you, so is your sister Emily, leave the child." Granny said, pulling Raina in for a hug.

"You are not angry?" Raina asked, lifting her face to take a look at her granny.

"Of course, I am. But I can forgive you if you are keeping my great grandchild," granny said smiling.

"Fine, I am keeping the baby," Raina replied, rubbing her stomach.

"That my girl," granny said, giving Raina another pinch on her cheek.

"Food is ready, you need to eat for our little one Raina" Emily said with a smirk on her face.

"I haven't forgiven you." Raina told Emily as she made her way to the dinner with granny smiling.
