I tried to sit up but then the pain became so harrowing and agonizing, that I bit my lip to stop myself from screaming. My eyelids were still heavy but then I didn't want to close them again. I tried to keep them open, perhaps to see the person that brought me here but I couldn't. As darkness embraced my vision again.
The cold breeze from the windows I guess, swept across the room, forcing me back to reality. I felt someone's breath brush over my face and I narrowed my eyes.
"You're awake?"I heard a sexy baritone and I slowly forced my eyelids open.
"How're you feeling?" He asked as he walked towards the nightstand and brought a glass of water.
"Your face looks familiar." I said with squinted eyebrows.
"That's where your brain comes into the equation." He replied rudely without a care.
"A simple answer couldn't have killed, you know?" I asked as he slowly helped me sit up.
He didn't say a word as he helped me with the glass of water after which he placed a pillow at my back for support. I stared into his eyes and like a flash it came running into my head, "Alpha Byron Kings." I called out and he raised an eyebrow at me.
"Thank you."I voiced out while still staring at him.
"For what?" He inquired, pretending to be oblivious of my reason.
"For saving my life." I replied while still staring at him.
"You don't have to,I didn't save your life, you just weren't meant to die in that way." He said as he walked to the nightstand and dropped the glass on it.
"No matter what you say, I'm still grateful to you for coming back there, for picking me up even when I might have resembled a corpse, for giving me treatments, for staying here with me. Trust me,I owe you my life." I averred with sincerity but then I saw him clench his fist together and grit his teeth.
"I said enough of that!" He squawked in annoyance.
"I just told you that I didn't save your damn life, you were meant to live, that's all!" He vocalized as he stared directly into my eyes using his Alpha authority on me.
"How're you feeling right now?" He asked with a low voice as he wrapped his arms around his chest.
"A little weak and then a slight headache."I replied and his gaze on me softened.
"Sherie will be here soon,by the way, she's the one that treated you, not me." He conveyed as he walked closer to my bed and leaned forward and his breath brushed on my skin again, causing an adrenaline rush all over my body. He placed the back of his palm on my neck and I stiffened,I felt an electric spark that caused my heart to race.
"Your temperature is normal now." He mumbled as he stood to his feet again.
"Ohh, the young lady is awake." I heard an old lady's voice from behind.
"You look better than you were two days ago." She said as she raised the blanket on my body and began to do a physical check up with her hands.
"Ahhh!"I screamed when her hand came in contact with the bandage on my chest.
"Sorry dear,it will heal slowly with time." She said with a smile as she slipped her hands off the blanket.
I smiled at her and then I stared into her eye and I couldn't help closing my eyes immediately. Her pupil is white and then her sclera is black. She's definitely not a wolf, I can't pinpoint on what she is but I know that she's far from being a wolf.
"Ohh, don't be afraid of my eye color, it's the beautiful gift the moon goddess gave me." She said with a smile and then I slowly opened my eyes and turned to Byron, he still wore his stoic expression.
"Let me get you something to eat,I will be right back." She said then walked out of the room in hurried steps.
"Who is she?"I asked Byron but then he squinted an eyebrow as though he didn't hear my question.
"What do you think she is?" He inquired, still giving me a rather dangerous look.
"A witch?"I muttered while staring at my blanket.
"She isn't, she's a hybrid wolf. Don't make her feel uncomfortable around you." He ordered and I nodded.
We didn't say anything till Sherie paddled in again with a tray of food,"Let me help you with it." She offered and I let her.
"What's your name dear?" She inquired as she blew air to the spoon of food in-between her fingers.
"Melody Brown." I replied then took the food in the spoon.
"What a beautiful name for a stunning young lady." She commented and I blushed at her words. I looked up and realized that Byron already left,I didn't even realize when he did.
"Thanks, you're Sherie right?" I inquired and she nodded.
"I overheard Alpha Byron say that, you're so unique and beautiful you know?" I said while staring deep into her eyes.
"You're good at flattery words." She uttered with a smile as she brought the spoon closer to my lips
"I mean it,you're beautiful." I said with a serious tone.
"Thanks." She replied as she continued feeding me.
"Is Alpha Byron's Pack close by?" I inquired and she shook her head sideways.
"It's actually a little far from here with cars but closer when we're in our wolf form." She replied and I couldn't help bulging out my eyes in shock.
"Then why is he staying far away from his Pack?"I inquired out of curiosity.
"Some things are better left unsaid." I knew better than to push further for answers.
After feeding me, she helped me to the bathroom and gave me a good bath then helped me put on a new and neat cloth. I felt so fresh afterwards. "Thank you so much Sherie,I really appreciate this." I said to her with a broad smile.
"You're welcome dear." She replied then walked out of my room,I kept staring into the thin air, and just when I was about to be driven into the dream world, I heard the door click open and Byron walked in.
"Are you asleep?" He inquired as he walked towards me and dragged a stool closer to my bed.
"No,I wasn't." I answered as I tried to sit up but then he helped me up immediately.
"Thanks." I said as I watched him sit down.
"I came to ask you a few questions." He started, then cleared his throat and looked directly into my eyes.
"Who are you?" I wasn't expecting that question at all.
"I am Melody..." He cut me short immediately without letting me complete my statement.
"I ask again, who are you?" He repeated and I took a deep breath.
"I was the Alpha of the Ash River Pack."That reply caused a rumble in my stomach and I felt a nut tire up in my guts.
