Chapter 4 Do You Believe In Fate

Conor was taken aback to see Kyra standing in front of him.

She was none other than his ex-girlfriend!

"Kyra, it's quite a surprise to find you here in Chasey," Conor said, managing a smile.

Even after two years, Kyra's charm was undiminished.

Her hair was stylishly arranged, adding to her sophisticated presence. A subtle touch of makeup enhanced her features, and her gentle smile brought a sense of serenity.

"Oh... Yes," Kyra responded, just as startled by Conor's presence.

She knew of Conor's job and spending habits. Although he earned a decent salary, he wasn't the type to shop at luxury stores.

Therefore, she wondered if his visit was prompted by her presence here.

Unsure, Kyra posed the question carefully. "Are you here to see me?"

"Well... Do you believe in fate?" Conor answered, his smile tinged with awkwardness.

If this had happened just a day earlier, he would have flatly denied it without a second thought.

But after just ending things with Madisyn, it was hard not to feel a wave of longing when he saw Kyra again.

During their school days, they were celebrated as the perfect couple - prom king and queen.

The only reason they had gone their separate ways was that Conor had chosen to chase new opportunities in Chasey, while Kyra had wanted to remain in the comfort of her hometown.

Unlike dramatic breakups often depicted in stories, theirs was quite peaceful.

In fact, they even kept in touch occasionally, maintaining a light, friendly connection.

"Fate, you say?" Kyra chuckled softly.

"Conor, are we still in high school? Those sweet words are for your girlfriend, not me," Kyra said, playfully sticking out her tongue. Yet, a subtle look of yearning lingered in her eyes, difficult to hide.

She was aware of his relationship with Madisyn, which had squashed any hopes of reigniting something with Conor. Yet, her emotions were not so easily dismissed, evidenced by her move to Chasey for work.

She said it was all about building a fortune, but who could say for sure what she was really after?

"I ended things," Conor said, forcing a bitter smile across his face.

"What? But weren't you two nearly married? What happened?" Kyra's surprise was evident as she blinked in astonishment.

Conor offered a smile, choosing not to elaborate further.

Personal issues were just that - personal, and not up for discussion.

Sensing the genuine sorrow in Conor's eyes, Kyra accepted his reluctance to disclose more. "Okay, we don't have to talk about it. I'm on the clock right now, so maybe you should go. But since you're single, let's catch up over dinner tonight. What do you say?"

"I was actually going to say-"

Before Conor could continue, they were interrupted by another employee approaching. Her badge showed that she was the sales manager.

"Welcome. Can I help you with anything?" the manager asked cheerfully.

She had overheard enough to guess that there was a personal history reemerging.

Still, whatever had happened between them was a private matter, and right now, it was time to focus on work!

Besides, his attire looked very cheap, probably not exceeding thirty dollars, and the priciest thing he owned was a smartphone that barely cost more than one and a half hundred.

She was sure that if the salesperson wasn't Kyra, he likely wouldn't have had the nerve to even walk through the door.

"Apologies, Ms. Flynn," Kyra quickly said, taken aback by the sudden appearance of her manager Joyce Flynn.

"Do you think any of these items would suit me?" Conor asked, seizing the opportunity to engage with the manager.

Visiting a luxury store was a new experience for him, and he was unfamiliar with the product range. With the manager now present, he took the chance to ask directly.

Although a bit reluctant, Joyce kept her tone steady and responded, "Sir, given your frame and proportions, nearly everything in our store would be a good fit for you."

Working as a sales manager for a high-end brand meant that she didn't have the option to dismiss a customer, even one who looked like he had nothing to spend. That was part of the job.

Still, she muttered to herself, "Admiring them is one thing, but you'll need money if you actually plan to buy."

"If that's the case, then..." Conor hesitated, surveying the store before nodding approvingly.

Once she heard that, Joyce had a clear idea of what Conor was about to say.

He was likely going to ask if he could try on a few outfits.

Yet, such a request seemed out of reach.

Trying on clothes meant having the money to buy them, and it was obvious that he didn't. So what made him think that he could try any of it on?

As she prepared a courteous way to decline, Conor confidently pointed to several pieces and said firmly, "I'll have one of each of these. Please pack them up."
