Chapter 3 A Life Unraveled

Jasmine's breath froze in her throat as the man in the dark suit drew closer, blocking their escape. His eyes sparkled with a hungry strength that made her skin crawl. "I suggest you two come with me. This doesn't have to get messy," he said, a smirk playing on his lips.

"Ethan, what do we do?" Jasmine mumbled, her heart beating against her ribcage.

"Stay behind me," he directed, his voice a low growl as he stepped forward, putting himself between her and the man. "We're not going anywhere with you."

The man laughed, a frigid sound that sent chills down Jasmine's spine. "You really think you can just walk away? You're in over your head, Sterling. You've made some terrible enemies."

"Enemies I've been trying to shake," Ethan shot back, his mouth clinched. "I'm done with this life."

"Is that right?" The man's smile grew, bringing across a tiny bit of danger. "You think you can just walk away from us? You've got something that belongs to us, and we're not letting you go that easily."

Jasmine's mind raced. What did Ethan have that was so important? "Ethan, what's going on?" she pressed, her voice shaking.

"Just stay quiet," he answered, without taking his eyes off the man. "We'll find a way out of this."

The man took a step closer, his look turning to Jasmine. "And you--poor little artist. You've gotten yourself mixed up in something that could end very poorly for you. You should have kept out of it."

"Leave her out of this!" Ethan shouted, stepping forward defensively.

"Too late for that," the man frowned. "You made your choice when you decided to marry her. Now you both have to pay the price."

Jasmine felt her heart drop. "Ethan, what do they want with me?" She grabbed his arm, terror strengthening her grip.

Ethan's countenance softened, a tiny amount of pain across his face. "It's my fault. I believed I could shelter you from all of this, but I was wrong."

The man's voice ripped through the tension like a dagger. "Enough with the drama. We can do things the easy way or the hard way. What's it going to be?"

"Get away from us!" Ethan shouted, his voice booming in the lane.

In a fast movement, the man pushed forward, and Jasmine's instincts kicked in. She grabbed Ethan's arm and pushed him back as the man reached for them. "Run!" she yelled.

They quickly moved down the alley, adrenaline surging through Jasmine's veins. She didn't know where they were going, but she just needed to keep moving. Ethan was right beside her, his presence a steadying force in the chaos.

"Head for the subway!" he strongly encouraged, glancing over his shoulder.

As they rounded the corner, they spotted the entrance to the subway station. A flickering neon sign illuminated the darkness, offering a small amount of hope. They rushed down the stairs, the thud of their footsteps echoing in the confined space.

"Which way?" Jasmine panted, scanning the dimly lit platform.

"Just get on the next train!" Ethan answered, urgency infusing his tone.

They just made it into the train as the doors slid shut behind them. Jasmine leaned against the cool metal pole, panting for breath. The train suddenly moved onward, and she felt a short sense of relief rush over her.

But such relief was short-lived. The train was almost empty, and the fluorescent lights flickered overhead, throwing spooky shadows. Jasmine's thoughts raced with questions. "Ethan, what do they want from you? What's this about?"

He raked a hand through his hair, displeasure clear on his face. "I can't explain everything right now. Just know that I never meant for you to be involved. I thought I could keep you safe."

"By lying to me?" Jasmine shot back, her emotions boiling to the surface. "Do you realized how dangerous this is? I could have been hurt back there!"

"I know," he responded, his voice strained. "And I'm sorry. I thought I could manage it alone, but now they know about you. They'll stop at nothing to achieve what they want."

"What do they want?" she pressed, desperation creeping into her voice.

Ethan waited, his look quickly moving to the window as the city blurred past. "I... I was involved in something illegal. An agreement that went wrong. I tried to pull away, but they won't let me go until they get what they're after."

Jasmine's heart fell. "What's that?"

He looked away, humiliation engraved on his features. "A shipment of rare art pieces. They assume I still have it, but I don't. I walked away from that world, but they're not done with me."

"Art pieces?" Jasmine echoed, shock rippling through her. "You mean--"

"Yes," he interrupted, his voice low. "I was trying to help a friend. I didn't understand how deep I was getting in until it was too late."

Jasmine felt a mix of fury and concern. "Why didn't you tell me any of this? We could have faced it together."

"I wanted to protect you!" Ethan's voice raised, then calmed. "But now it's too late. They're coming for us. They want to make sure I pay for my mistakes, and they'll use you to complete it."

Jasmine's mind reeled. She couldn't believe this was happening, that their lives had spiraled so quickly into disaster. "So what now? What's the plan?"

"We lay low for a while. We need to get to my friend's residence. He can help us find a way out of this mess." Ethan's eyes glittered with determination, yet uneasiness lingered behind the surface.

As the train screeched to a halt, they stepped off onto the platform. The faint lights formed long shadows, and Jasmine felt the weight of the world pressing on her shoulders. Her mind raced, and she couldn't shake the feeling of fear dread that clung to her.

"Ethan, what if they find us?" she asked, panic coming into her voice.

"Then we'll deal with it," he said, his attitude serious. "I won't let them hurt you. I swear it."

They began to travel through the station, the echo of their footsteps merging with the distant sounds of the city above. As they approached the exit, Jasmine's heart raced with doubt. She felt like she was living in a nightmare, and there was no waking up.

But as they stepped into the night, a figure came out from the shadows. With a gleam of metal flashing in the streetlight, Jasmine paused, her breath tightening in her throat.

"Ethan!" she cried, her heart sinking as the stranger took a step forward, revealing a familiar face.

"Where do you think you're going?" the man grinned, his eyes blazing with hate.
