Chapter 5 Shadows In The Light

Jasmine's breath caught as the stranger stepped into the faint light of the alley. The man's face was familiar--one of the dark-suited goons who had chased them at the airport. His eyes sparkled with a predatory thirst, and a terrifying smile grew across his lips.

"Thought you could escape, did you?" he taunted, taking a step closer.

Ethan automatically went in front of Jasmine, his body tight and ready. "Get away from us!" he cried, his voice firm despite the panic surging through him.

"Or what?" the man snarled. "You're outnumbered, Sterling. You and your little artist can't run forever."

Jasmine's heart raced as adrenaline shot through her veins. "Ethan, we need to do something!" she begged, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Stay behind me," he instructed, eyes concentrated on the oncoming threat.

But just as Jasmine felt her willpower fail, David stepped closer, his tone changing from aloof to dominating. "You really don't want to do this," he said, a deadly edge in his tone. "You know who I am."

The thug stopped, his demeanour changing from confidence to doubt. "What do you mean?"

"Let's just say I have friends who wouldn't take kindly to you messing with me," David said, his voice dripping with a cool refusal to cooperate that shocked Jasmine.

The man's swagger slipped for a second. "You think that scares me? I'm not afraid of you, or your friends."

Ethan grabbed the occasion. "Jasmine, we need to go. Now!"

Without waiting for a response, he took her hand and pushed her toward the alley's exit. But before they could flee, the thug suddenly jumped up and grabbed Ethan's arm and tugging him back.

"Not so fast!" He threw Ethan against the wall, the force pulling a pained grunt from him.

"Let him go!" Jasmine shouted, fear seazing her heart. She felt a surge of anger and determination, unwilling to stand by while they threatened the man she loved.

"Do you want to see how far I can push him?" the thug hissed, tightening his grab on Ethan.

"Stop!" Jasmine cried, coming forward. "You don't have to do this. Just let us go!"

The man waited, considering her statements. "Why should I? You're both in this mess together. You think you can just walk away?"

"Because if you let us go, you'll have a chance to walk away too," David said, his voice smooth and controlled. "You don't want to make this worse than it already is."

The thugs eyes glanced between David and Jasmine, hesitation flaring in his stare. "What do you know?"

"I know you're outnumbered, and this isn't worth your time," David said, his tone calm but serious. "We can work something out, but you need to let him go."

Ethan fought against the thug grip, his eyes finding Jasmine's. "Don't listen to him, Jasmine! We can discover another way!"

But Jasmine's instincts were screaming at her to act. "Please," she said, her voice shaking (in fear) but firm. "We don't have to fight. Just let us go, and we'll leave you alone."

The guy hesitated, and for a second, it appeared like he may yield. But suddenly a deep growl resonated from behind him, and Jasmine's heart fell as she realized more People were coming from the darkness.

"Looks like your friends don't care about dealing," the thug muttered, his confidence returning as he tightened his grip on Ethan. "And you're about to find out how serious this really is."

Panic raced through Jasmine. "Ethan!" she yelled, feeling helpless as the situation worsened out of hand.

Just then, David stepped in front of them, his behavior serious. "You really want to do this? You think your boss will be pleased with you making a scene? We can settle this quietly."

The thugs eyes twitched with doubt, but he didn't release Ethan. "What do you have in mind?"

"Let's take this somewhere private. We can talk about how to solve this without additional," David offered, his tone convincing.

Jasmine felt her heart speed up as she just realised the valuable things that might be lost were bigger than she had assumed. "Ethan, we can't trust him!" she cried, feelings of hopelessness in her voice.

Ethan's eyes fixed onto hers, full of purpose. "We have to buy time. Just follow my lead."

The thug weighed David's offer, looking at the approaching strangers. Finally, he released Ethan, thrusting him away with a warning quick look. "Fine. But if you're lying, you'll regret it."

Ethan staggered back, breathing deeply as he regained his balance. "We're not lying," he continued, his voice steadying. "But you'll regret this if you don't listen."

David waved for them to follow him, leading the way into a short alley that twisted into darkness. Jasmine stayed close to Ethan, her heart beating in her chest. She could sense the tension in the air, a storm gathering just beneath the surface.

As they moved forward, Jasmine couldn't avoid the feeling that they were headed into a trap. "Where are we going?" she whispered to Ethan, panic creeping into her voice.

"I don't know," he admitted, staring back at David. "But we need to keep moving. We can't allow them corner us."

Suddenly, David halted, turning to face them with a serious attitude. "Listen closely. I know you're scared, but if we're going to get out of this, we need to work together. You have to trust me, even if it feels wrong."

Jasmine swapped a quick look with Ethan, doubt simmering between them. "Trust you?" she questioned, her voice filled with state of shock. "After all of this?"

"Right now, it's our only option," David insisted, his tone frantic. "We're running out of time. They won't let us go easily."

Before she could react, a loud cry rang from the alley behind them. "There they are! Get them!"

Panic raced through Jasmine as she turned to see more guys come out from the shadows, their eyes fastened onto them with evil intent. "Run!" she cried, fright pushing her every action.

Ethan grabbed her hand, dragging her forward as they rushed deeper into the maze of alleys. David led the way, moving through the tight passages with seasoned skill.

"Where do we go?" Jasmine suddenly took a short breath in, her lungs burning.

"Just keep following me!" David shouted, looking back over his shoulder.

They fled around a corner, but the noises of pursuit echoed frighteningly behind them. Jasmine's pulse pounded as they turned another bend, desperation clutching at her insides. She could feel the darkness closing in, the shadows moving ever closer.

Suddenly, David halted, pulling open a door that led to a dimly lighted warehouse. "In here!" he strongly encouraged.

They suddenly moved inside, the door slamming shut behind them. Jasmine placed her back against the wall, her heart thrumming in her chest. "What now?" she mumbled, her voice trembling.

David turned to face them, his countenance. "We need to buy some time. They'll be here any minute."

Ethan stared around, examining the space for anything they could use. "What are we going to do?"

David took a deep breath, his behavior changing to one of steely determination. "I'll hold them off. You two find a way out."

"What? No!" Jasmine exclaimed, fear flooding her veins. "You can't!"

"There's no other choice. You have to escape," David insisted, his voice firm. "I'll distract them. Just go!"

Before they could debate more, heavy thumping rang through the door, followed by shouts. Jasmine felt her heart increase. "Ethan, we can't leave him!"

"We have to!" Ethan replied urgently, his eyes full of purpose. "We can't let them catch us. We'll find another way to help him. We have to believe him."

Jasmine waited, divided between her intuition and the reality of their difficult situation. But the sound of heavy boots became louder, and she realized they had to act immediately.

"Go!" David shouted, pulling them into a side door. "Now!"

With a final see at David, Jasmine felt a mixture of terror and gratitude. They were traveling into the unknown, and as they slipped through the side door, the shadows of danger loomed big behind them.
