Chapter 6 On the detached duplex in Newyork

Gwen's POV.

I robbed my palms hurriedly. I needed to lose some tension, because a huge amount of it was hanging in the air.

"Calm down, Gwen."

I pleaded with myself.

Grabbing my luggage, I took the bold step to walk into my mother's house.

"You didn't even care to answer my question, mum. And this is the way you welcome your daughter you haven't seen in two years?"

I asked in a very light tone. I also tried to act like I was mad at her, but my mother, Rachael, being who she is quickly dismissed me with her loud mouth.

"Of course there is a CCTV in the estate that was how I saw you coming.

And how else do you want me to greet you? prostrate?" Her voice was cold, loud and distant.

It dawned on me that moment that we might never get along again.

Infact, I wasn't even looking forward to that anymore. I just needed a place to rest my head for some days.

I gulped hard.

Not knowing what else to say, I rolled my luggage to my old room.

My mother and I were hardly on good terms. This was because I questioned her characters which were not right.

A knock came on my door. The door opened immediately and the most beautiful little one walked in.

With a mouth wide with smile, I ran to carry my little sister.

"Look at my baby, you're so grown up." My lips pecked over her cute little face.

My heart quickly became full with her giggles and the way she circled her cute self over me.

"How did you know I was here, Lyla?"

"Mummy told me you were here."

Lyla's cute little voice sounded.

"I missed you, Gwen."

"I missed you too my darling."

The cute little human melted on my body in a hug, and just then did I realize how much I have missed her.

How much I have been away from home.

The last time I saw Lyla, she was a year old, and that was two years ago.

Seeing her all grown and beautiful made my heart melt so much.

Since I couldn't call my mother, I only reach out to Lyla whenever Sandra comes back from school and gives Lyla her phone for a call.

Lyla had a tablet for her personal use, but my mother disconnected it from receiving calls.

It wasn't even because of me, it was mostly because of Lyla's father.

Sandra was also my younger sister. She was in college studying law.

She also has a different father from me and Lyla, and somehow my mother manages to have issues with each of our fathers.

She blocked our father from contacting us. She'd always make whoever questions her about her actions an enemy, and that was the main reason for our quarrels.

The fact that I have been searching for my father, and she was aware of it.

She kicked against it, and turned me to an enemy for wanting to know who my father was.

I pressed my lips harder on Lyla's cheek. I immediately waved off the thoughts of my mother.

I was already in a more serious situation than worry what my mother would think.

Lyla giggled again.

I promise I love everything about my little sister.

I dropped her to the floor and proceeded to get a candy I got for her.

It was the only candy I managed to pick from my room in Chicago.

As I took out the candy, the door opened and my mother walked in.

Still holding the most dreadful gaze, she leaned against the wall, surveying my room.

"Lyla darling, could you please give mummy and I some minutes?"

She nodded immediately, and collecting the candy from me, she left in excitement.

"I see you're unpacking, and those are lots of clothes."

"I'll be here for just a while."

"A while is not specific, tell me something. A while, you mean, a day, a week, an hour?"

"Come on mum, this is not time for all of these. Are you going to even pretend you didn't see the news online?"

I asked pitifully, sitting back on the bed as the thoughts of the whole situation overwhelmed me.

My mother scoffed, "you mean the one of your divorce? I'm not surprised, I wasn't expecting it last. I'm just surprised you chose to come here of all places."

Her voice was cold, yet lips curled up in what looked like a snarl.

I didn't imagine for a second that she'd mock me.

"Are you happy that I'm going through this?"

"Am I? Let's just say I'm indifferent. Yet, I'm happy you now know what it feels to have broken tracks with men. Next time you won't ask me why I couldn't be with any of my kid's fathers."

She said. Evilly.

"But that's not the case here. Don't even try and compare the two situations because there's no way they're ever the same!"

"It doesn't matter, Gwen, I mean, what is currently making headlines is your crashed marriage, not mine."

Her eyes gleamed and my heart shattered into pieces.

What kind of a mother hates her child this way?

"I should have known better than to come here."

"It's not like you have a choice. Oh, you think I didn't hear of how you foolishly quit your job, and merged your accounts?"

My chest tightened further at her words.

They felt like hot charcoal in my throat.

"How did you know that?"

"There's no point for your questions, just tell me when you're leaving my house. You know I can't have my clients meet you here. I don't want their interests to be on you."
