Chapter 5

Kate was all smiles, but Josh frowned, looking somewhat uncomfortable.

I reminded him that if we didn't leave soon, we'd be late for work. Only then did he start the car.

This wasn't the first time something like this had happened.

Back when Kate had just transferred to our hospital, after work, she asked Josh to give her a ride home since it was on his way.

So, the three of us headed down to the underground parking lot.

Kate walked briskly and naturally took the front seat.

Out of politeness, I held my tongue despite my annoyance.

Once we got home, I confronted Josh.

I argued that the front seat held special significance, and why should Kate get to sit there?

He sternly accused me of being unreasonable, "It's just a seat. Why are you making such a fuss? Besides, Kate is new at the hospital. What's wrong with cutting her some slack?"

Cutting her some slack?

If I keep giving in, I might as well be replaced by her!

I was so upset I was at a loss for words, feeling like he didn't care about me.

But now I realized it was just a seat, not worth the fuss.

I turned my head to look out the window.

Meanwhile, Kate kept chattering away in the front seat.

"Josh, do you recall that place we visited last time? I found it to be truly romantic and enjoyable. We ought to go there again at some point!" Her tone was a bit shy and somewhat flirtatious.

Anyone who didn't know better might think she was Josh's wife.

Not only was she sitting in the front, but she was also chatting with him as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Unfortunately for her, Josh didn't seem interested in engaging this time.

He merely responded with a nonchalant "Yep" and focused on driving.

Kate was eager to make herself noticed, constantly bringing up new topics.

Josh, however, didn't respond to her at all and instead asked me, "Sweetheart, did you have breakfast?"

His use of "Sweetheart" caught me off guard, and even the usually talkative Kate quieted down.

He had never called me "Sweetheart" before.

I nodded and replied in a calm voice, "Yes."

This time, it was I who was distant. I didn't want to engage with him.
