Feather was washing the after dinner dishes when she noticed that Devon seemed upset.
"What is wrong love?" She asked.
"What exactly do you know of your lineage?" He asked.
"My mom was full Abanaki and my father was half Abanaki. Why do you ask?"
"I was doing data entry for my boss on everyone here. Your mom never was pregnant. Which means your parents lied to you. I am facing heat from my boss. She wants to force us to divorce and boot you off the reservation. I want to do a DNA test to double check you lineage." He said.
"How can that be? She can force us to divorce and boot me out? What the hell am I supposed to do? This place and these people are all I know Devon." She said tears running down her cheeks.
"I have a friend who can help you out. It's best you pack tonight he will be here to pick you up at 9 in the morning. I wish this was different. I love you so damned much." He held her.
That night they slept in separate rooms. She packed a few days of clothes. She put her rings in their boxes and put them on Devon's dresser before she went to town hall. The DNA test was a cheek swab. Then she was whisked away before she could say goodbye to anyone. She bawled like a baby all the way to her new apartment. She had an old laptop that worked and began looking for a job.
With no luck in the small border town of Derby Line she ended up in she had to budget her meager amount of money she had.
She was doing laundry when she met a lady around her age in the buildings laundry room.
"New gal right? I am Allison Summers. Have any luck job hunting?" She asked with a bubbly personality.
"Feather Arrow. Yes I am the new gal. No luck on job front. You know anyone hiring?" She replied.
"My work is hiring. I work at the hotel down the block. What are you trained in?" She hit the washer. The thing was an old clunker.
"I got and maintained my certifications in Marketing and Tourism. I also am trained in mechanics." She had more training but nothing that would relate to the hotel industry.
"Follow me to my apartment so we can get to know each other and I can tell my boss about you." She found out they lived across the hall from each other's units.
Allison gave her a glass of iced water with a wedge of lemon in it. "So where are you from?"
She took a sip. " I was living on the Abanaki Reservation. Recently my ex husband found information that I wasn't who I was led to believe. Huge government shit show. No legal trolling on my part." She said.
"Wow. This must be a huge culture shock then. What's your cell number? My boss wants to talk to you." Allison replied.
"I have no cellular phone I barely have anything." My life consists of a loaf of bread, butter and 4 outfits." Allison looked stunned.
"You mean you don't even have furniture?" She then tapped at her phone.
"Nope been sleeping on the floor." She was embarrassed to admit.
"Well I have a hefty savings. I will get you set up. My boss also decided to hire you blind the company is desperate for employees. Get your purse." She hurried to get her wallet. Allison did a double check if her place.
"How much money do you have?"
"Enough to cover bread butter and bills for 2 months."
"Considering this is section 8 that's not much."
When they got to the local Walmart Allison told her to get what she needed including food. With the awesome service of delivery to her apartment she had everything she needed. She promised Allison to repay every cent when she could.
She called the number she knew was Devon's work number even though he was home by now. She left him her number and told him to call when he got the results back.
The next day she began working the front desk at a high end hotel. She caught on fast and out worked everyone. She loved the work though she was exhausted by the end of the day.
