Chapter 8

Princess Miranda saw that I hadn't responded for a long time. She frowned slightly, clearly losing her patience and interest.

She coldly ordered, "If the master asks a question and you don't answer, punish yourself."

Without any expression, I raised the hand that had just been holding grapes and slapped my face repeatedly without mercy. The grapes burst, juice splattering everywhere, making the scene look absurdly comical.

This absurd scene, however, elicited a clear, ringing laugh from Princess Miranda. She giggled, as if the previous gloom and displeasure had dissipated with her laughter.

With her mood improved, my punishment naturally came to an end. Half of my face was already numb from the swelling. I lowered my head, holding back my tears, not letting them fall. Because I knew this was something I had to endure.

A few days later, in a quiet alley outside the princess residence.

I took out a portion of my savings and handed it to an elderly couple in front of me. They hesitated, their eyes filled with tears. The woman's sobs were intermittent, and the man's temples were already graying.

They were the parents of the maid who had been dragged away by Princess Miranda. Now, the maid had been beaten to death, her body completely destroyed, leaving only this elderly couple behind.

After my repeated insistence, they finally accepted the money. The two of them supported each other as they left.

This had happened countless times. I had been handling the final arrangements for those poor souls who had suffered unexpected hardships. Perhaps because I had been with Valerie for so long, I couldn't stand to see others in pain.

"Life is full of hardships. If you have the ability to help, why not do some good deeds and accumulate virtue?" Valerie used to say this, but now she was buried at the bottom of a dry well.

I couldn't help but wonder if there was any justice in the world. Why were the kind-hearted people often wronged, while those who did evil could live without consequence?

As for the so-called doing good and earning virtue... I dared not think too much about it. Without Valerie's guidance, I feared I might turn into a villain. After all, what I was about to do demanded revenge.
