Chapter 4
Soon, I heard that the princess residence was recruiting a new batch of maids.
I bribed one of the brokers.
She weighed the coins in her hand and told me to wait for good news.
Pretending to be overly polite, I saw her off. As soon as she turned her back, my face turned cold.
A few days later, I followed behind a group of newly recruited maids, keeping my head down and my voice low.
"Let me make this clear: serving Princess Miranda is a blessing for you all! Behave yourselves!"
The head maid strutted with her head held high, full of self-importance.
Her beady eyes scanned the crowd and finally fixed on me. Her voice was sharp.
"You! The scrawny one!"
I obediently lowered my head and stepped forward cautiously, waiting for her instructions.
"With that foxy look of yours, you'll stay in the servants' quarters as a cleaning maid!"
Under the sympathetic or mocking gazes of those around me, I silently complied.
In the days that followed, although I was assigned to the servants' quarters, I did not lose heart.
I quietly did my assigned tasks, occasionally helping the housekeeper with small chores or taking on extra work for other maids.
I even volunteered for the unpleasant task of cleaning the latrines, which everyone else avoided.
Gradually, I earned a good reputation among the servants in the residence. They were willing to help me more because they had benefited from my assistance.
Having more friends meant more opportunities.
I used to be too impulsive and reckless.
That's why Valerie always taught me the ways of the world bit by bit, hoping I would understand social etiquette and remain humble and composed to survive in this cutthroat world.
I was a beggar from a young age. If it weren't for Valerie's kindness in taking me in, I would have starved to death on the streets long ago.
But even such a gentle and kind-hearted Valerie met with misfortune.
In the end, her entire family was destroyed, and she died tragically in a dry well.
I couldn't bear it.
